If you don't mind the explanation coming a year late: He says it takes a lot of effort to make that 의 [ui] sound, even for Koreans, so it's usually *replaced with another sound* in all cases except for when it comes at the beginning of a word. So the 의 in words like 의사 (doctor) or 의미 (meaning, significance) are pronounced the standard way [ui], while the rest are overwhelmingly pronounced differently. *The sound substitutions are as follows:* -When 의 is attached to a consonant (anything besides 'ㅇ'), the sound it takes is 이. He used the example of 띄어쓰기 (spacing) so it's now pronounced [띠어쓰기] as in 4:20. Another ex: 희망 (hope) is pronounced [히망]. -Whenever 의 is not at the beginning of a word, it's pronounced 이 in the majority of cases. Exs: 주의 (caution) is pronounced [주이]. Same with 회의 (meeting) [회이], 논의 (discussion) [노니]. -Final case is for the 의 which serves a grammatical function, indicating possession or the relationship between things/people. This 의 gets pronounced as 에. So 나의 (informal my) is pronounced [나에]. Finally, he gives an example that has you applying all these rules together. 민주주의의 의의 ----> [민주주이에 의이]
