I don't usually like the "BUT THATS THE POINT" argument because it's usually pretty lame and boring anyway, but the whole point of this scene is that Hank doesn't want to view Connor as simply just a machine and nothing more, he wants to see something in Connor. So when he asks him "What happens if I pull this trigger?" And Connor simply says "Nothing." It's him telling Hank that killing him accomplishes absolutely nothing.

While others become deviants quite early in the story and have a clear goal, we see Connor brushing off his doubts throughout the whole story and being confused without showing anyone. His character growth is the most genuine of all in my opinion, and this is often exactly how people grow as well, not all of a sudden, in a way Connor felt like he had the most realistic humanly growth of all. Truly a masterpiece.
