Hello! In today's video I go over a few little techniques that help add interest to your coloring page. Although there is a flaw in the paper (I don't see it until I add the background), I decided to post this video anyway. There are a few voiceovers throughout the video where I explain what I am doing, so watch for those! I have listed the supplies I used below. As always, thanks for watching!

Lovely. I love small illustrations like this. They are so fun. You have the same set of blending brushes as me! Aren't they wonderful! I especially like the real tiny ones. I also use the palette board or a piece of clear sturdy plastic for scribbling a little bit of water based markers or I stamp distress ink pads onto the board or plastic and pick up the ink or marker with a brush and paint onto my page that way. It works really well and looks beautiful and you can easily mix new colors this way. I also spend alot of time mixing my gel crayons into colors I actually like. Lol. Also I use the palette board for inktense on occasion. But the main use is with gel crayons and oil pastels. One thing you could try is laying down two or three different straight lines of color close or right next to each other on your board and carefully pick that up with a brush. Also you can tear a piece of paper or cut the edge of it to a design you want for example rays of the sun or a borealis and then apply the colors of the gel crayons to the edge of the paper that you have torn or cut and then place down onto your coloring page and simply use your finger to smear out. I love gel crayons the possibilitys and potential is only limited to your imagination! They also layer over each other well too! I've actually used them in the past on the actual image itself applied straight to the page and then smoothed out with a wet damp brush. I hope I explained all that in a way that makes sense. Btw most gel crayons if they are not set in with water are erasable with a electric eraser. Also if you apply them directly to your page and they wont blend out for you just dampen your finger the slightest bit to help move the color along. Same with distress ink they are erasable as well. I love the colors you have chosen as usual. I just adore all the beautiful different beiges, grays, and umbers etc in the Prismacolor set. Polys are good, they have there place and purpose ofc but I will always love the Prismacolors more simply because I like the colors better. Thank you for another lovely video! P.s Karen valentine uses gelatos for background work, and Cindy cink uses oil pastels as well on her channel. Also coloring at vees finished pages videos showcase alot of gelatos or gel crayons as well. Especially the last two or three videos. I consider gel crayons pretty much the same as oil pastels. Only gel crayons don't smell as bad and move a little easier. I hope some of this information is helpful to you and you grow to love gel crayons, gelatos, distress crayons etc as much as I do!

So, yes this was my first time using the gel crayons. Thanks so much for helping me with all the different ways to use them! I had no idea they were so versatile! I have some stencils I was trying to use with them, but maybe I was doing something wrong b/c the color wasn't coming off when I wiped a damp towel over it...I don't know, maybe it depends on the type of paper, too. I'll have to play around with them more. I did see Karen Valentine using gelatos for backgrounds, so I bought some of those too! LOL☺ I just haven't gotten around to using them much. Thanks again for your help and info! I really appreciate it! ☺💞

@@jenscoloringcorner Well the background looks awesome regardless of this being your first time. Am I the only colorist obsessed with every white medium there is? (And also black) I hear the white (coconut) gelato is a must have. It's on my list along with the white neocolor. I'm so looking forward to see what you do with your gelatos etc in the future! Your so imaginative in comimg up with ways to use things! That is weird about the stencils. Maybe not enough pigment on your brush? Maybe try a stencil or stipple brush if you have some like the ones Valentine uses. If I understood what you were saying correctly about the color not coming off? If not disregard.

@@blankmission5369 Yeah, I'll have to play around with the Distress Crayons and stencils some more. Also the new gelatos! And how would you use the white gelato? I think I got that one in the set I ordered. I'll have to do some more research on those. ☺

@@jenscoloringcorner Oh well, many ways to use the white gelato. Hope you are taking notes or a screenshot. Lol. Remember ofc that they layer over pretty much any medium. With the exception of watercolor and probably acrylic. They can actually be used as a resist for watercolor. So instead of masking fluid etc the white gelato or any color gel crayon for that matter with the possible exception of distress crayons can be used as a barrier for where you don't want your watercolor to flood onto on your page. I am not sure if distress crayon has wax in it or not so I can't say if it would work as a resist. I was always attracted to the gelatos for thier colors and the silky crayons. The distress crayons I don't really like because I'd rather own distress ink. Another way to use the white gelato is to make things glow by simply applying it smoothly so it's sort of worked in a little bit to the tooth of the paper and then using another translucent color on top. Think traditional bokeh (by traditional bokeh I mean actual colored blurred spots not empty white circles), think firefly's ”or glow dots,” sun, moon or anything else you want to make glow. It of course helps if the surrounding or adjacent area is somewhat darker. As you already know. Let's see what else? White is of course good for blending and also smudging together colors directly applied to the page, (think maybe a patchy, mottled, or marbled effect and then layer over that or mix in with some white to give a sharp contrast) or ofc for mixing different colors indirect on your board. You could use the white gelatos as a soft highlight. But my favorite way would to be to use them to make a mist, or also a fog. My white gel crayon, my white chalk marker, and my white oil pastel also are useful for this and depending on the depth of translucency or opaqueness I want I will either go with one of those or white gouache. But the white gelato is more opaque then my current gel crayon etc and more translucent and easier to work with then white gouache. I guess the white gelato could also be used for clouds, smoke, and steam if mixed with other colors. Maybe even possibly sea mist or foam. I saw the most fabulous bokeh done on valentines channel. Just search her channel name and then type in bokeh. I would highly recommend watching the one called water splash gelato bokeh background..(the one with the male elf). I learned alot from that video and I also bought the stipple brushs after that video. Lol. That's not to say you need them to recreate her technique but they are nice brushes to have in your arsenel. For example they can be used for different mediums to create different effects. The stipple effect of course, a acrylic chalk brush if you use the longest one, and stencils for use with ink and gel crayons. The brushes she uses give a more textured effect as opposed to the blender brushes which give a nice smooth look. But as far as white gel mediums go the white gelato is kinda like the equivalent to the white Prismacolor. It just can't be beat. Also gelatos and distress crayons can be used as watercolor if say you got a special color that you don't have or can't make they can very easily be mixed with water on your palette board. Also you can create colored texture using gesso and a chunk of the gelato, distress crayons by simply mixing and mashing the two together. Think texture of stone, or snake skin, or just specials effects. Just apply it let it set up just a bit till you can carve or scratch into it to make patterns, marks etc. Okay that is probably more then you wanted to know about the white gelato or gel crayons in general. I assume alot of this stuff you already know but I wanted to be as thorough as possible! I'm very chatty after midnite as well so that coupled with the fact that I love talking about art and supplies doesnt help. 🤦🏼 Edit: Yes I am looking forward to getting my white gelato and other colors as well. Unfortunately not all the colors can be bought open stock.

@@blankmission5369 Wow! Thanks for all of that information! I'm going straight to Karen V.'s channel right now to look up that video! Also, I just finished my latest page yesterday (another from Daydreams which will be up on my channel in a couple days, once I finish editing), so I have some free time to mess around with my gelatos today and try some of your suggestions! Thank you so much for taking the time to pass on all of this info! Do you have an IG ? I would love to see your work! Hope you have a wonderful Sunday! ☺
