CLIP DESCRIPTION:
While Hannah (Mia Farrow) and Holly (Dianne Wiest) quarrel over Holly's future, Lee (Barbara Hershey) is wracked with guilt from having lan affair with Hannah's husband.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
A Woody Allen Manhattan mosaic, Hannah and Her Sisters concerns the lives, loves, and infidelities among a tightly-knit artistic clan. Hannah (Mia Farrow) regularly meets with her sisters Holly (Dianne Wiest) and Lee (Barbara Hershey) to discuss the week's events. It's what they don't always tell each other that forms the film's various subplots. Hannah is married to accountant and financial planner Elliot (Michael Caine), who carries a torch for Lee, who in turn lives with pompous Soho artist Frederick (Max Von Sydow). Meanwhile, Holly, a neurotic actress and eternal loser in love, dates TV producer Mickey (Allen), who used to be married to Hannah and spends most of the film convinced that he's about to die. Appearing in supporting parts are Lloyd Nolan and Maureen O'Sullivan (Farrow's real mom), as the eternally bickering husband-and-wife acting team who are the parents of Hannah and her sisters. The film begins and ends during the family's traditional Thanksgiving dinner, filmed in Farrow's actual New York apartment. Unbilled cameos are contributed by Sam Waterston as one of Wiest's brief amours and Tony Roberts as one of Allen's friends. Hannah and Her Sisters collected Oscars for Michael Caine, Dianne Wiest, and Woody Allen's screenplay.

Beautifully shot scene. The movement of the camera elevates the quality of the writing and helps to reveal the relationships and conflicts between the characters - and their inner conflicts. And yet the camera work is not so arty that it calls attention to itself or distracts you from the story. Woody really knows what he's doing.

Farrow is so amazing in this scene. She is so commited to her role as nurterer and keeper of the peace that it is kind of shocking when her voice changes when she's had enough of Holly's flakiness and vindictiveness. "You wanna write then write! Take six months! Take a year! Whatever! Maybe you'll be sitting on a good play."

great observation. very true. I love the way in the entire film how Hannah is so trying with holly every time she deals with her-and then-it always seems to go to this. I also love that you can watch this scene 3 different times really focusing on each sister and how they all are doing so much the entire time. I also love the way Dianne Weist uses the phrase "loser". it is hilarious and awful! incredible scene.

Farrow has such a wonderful face for an actress....she can look plain, or pretty. Even after their bust up, Woody Allen was extremely complimentary when he compared her to Diane Keaton, her replacement in MANHATTAN MURDER MYSTERY, saying, "Mia can actually become different people."

A woman who has a lot of hidden resentment towards her sister? Good films are about flawed people, not saints.

I mean...we could also say "What kind of man sleeps with his wife's sister? Least appealing character in the film." But I think I understand both Elliot and Lee. They're lost, unfulfilled, searching for something. So is Holly. So is Mickey. So is Frederick! Hannah's outwardly the most together, but even she ultimately confesses to "enormous needs" and we see her vulnerability. Allen's writing was at its most confident and nuanced in this period, so I do enjoy and respect these characters, despite their flaws and misdeeds. I don't want to judge them.

Hannah is the quintessential "not-nice nice person". Her actions towards her sisters always convey the message, "I've got my act together, and you two are such losers. But I'm a good person, so I'll bail you out again, even though we all know you'll fail at everything you try." This "fake nice" act wears her marriage down to the nub so that her husband seeks comfort with one of her sisters who at least seems authentic, even if rather flaky. Unfortunately, the passive aggressive way she communicates this message seems to be completely lost on most of the audience. Even given the final scene where Diane Wiest happily announces to her husband, Woody Allen, that she is now successfully pregnant. There was also a scene between Farrow and Wiest in the original theater release of the film that got deleted when it went to DVD. Farrow and Wiest are shopping, and Farrow does her "not-nice nice girl" number on Wiest until Wiest completely loses it and screams "You're the only one who can make me feel this way!" I suspect that scene got deleted because Farrow wanted it deleted. After watching that scene, you get a completely different insight into the dynamic among these sisters, and Hannah does not come out looking like a saint. Quite the opposite.

Agree with this assessment. Curious that you said that scene is missing from the dvd of the film. It’s been on every version I’ve seen, including my blu ray copy. That’s a great scene too and your analysis of Hannah is spot on. Love this movie and it’s subtleties.
@simonboccanegra3811
@simonboccanegra3811 3 жыл бұрын
I see both points of view in the shopping scene. Hannah is undermining in her subtle way, and Holly can tell. But then we hear Holly struggling through "I'm Old-Fashioned" in the audition scene, and I don't think it's just because Hannah got into her head. Hannah was probably right to say "You're not a good singer" in her roundabout way. Musical theater is not where Holly's talents are.

Well said! Yes, the end of the film is a dig at Hannah. Hannah was never able to conceive a child with Allen's character. Wiest's character DOES conceive with Allen. This means that it was always Hanna's fault all along. It was not Allen who was suffering from sterility, it was Hannah.

I think Diannes character was a bit immature and playing the victim, saying they undercut her enthusiasm Etc, but, at least she was honest! lol. Not having seen all the movie i can’t truly say. Seems like Barbara’s character has just as many issues. Although id be reacting like her, if i had to listen to the other two’s constant bickering. lol
