Hannah Sherman Mini-Tunnel Car Wash - Shell, West Chester OH

While up in the Cincinnati area on business, I noticed a few car washes around my hotel. There was a Laserwash 4000, a D&S 5000, and this small, older Hannah Sherman tunnel. Given the choices, I opted for the tunnel to try something different. It actually turned out being pretty interesting. It was fairly aggressive, knocking both mirrors back during the wash cycle. While it appears to have done a solid job, my rental car was clean going in. So it's hard to tell how much this system actually did. In any case, hope you enjoy!

whoa. believe it or not this is a fairly "newer" HSI tunnel, likely installed in the very very late 1990's or early 2000's, I've actually never seen installs of their final years, but this is a fine example. Post-Hanna Sherman and Jim-Coleman merging equipment used the same components and designs, especially the odd and inefficient Concorde driers. I believe some of those mitters are still being produced. Also, that is a really rare and interesting pay station that I have never seen. I must say, the fact that it's still using the original cloth is really gross. it looks like it's in terrible condition, and it would totally bring life back with neoglide wraps.

Wow, thanks for the insight. I was guessing this system was about 10 years older than that. As a side question, any thoughts on this Nu-Star (?) soft touch I stumbled on yesterday? The shell branding is outdated by DECADES, so most likely the tunnel was either upgraded or entirely replaced. Also, SF Car Wash Channel beat me to it, but yes- it's a NuStar Soft Touch Plus. We had one of those with the strange mitters here, but the gas station boarded it up for a couple of years and bulldozed the bay with the wash still inside!! what a waste. They are really rare.

The one I’ve filmed had an actual Hanna Valet Pay Station. I’ve only seen them decommissioned and that was my first time seeing one that worked.

There is this car wash near me which is pretty creepy if you can catch it at the certain time of the night. I first saw this car wash when I was on my way from a fair at night, when I first saw it I first thought it was a car garage of some sort, and there was no lights what so ever around the car wash except for the blue lights on the gantry(This is a touch-free system, and yes, it does have blue lights on it.) and it looked very creepy with just the blue lights, I don't know if there were no bay lights at the time or if they were not working, because I pass it now and then mostly at night and see the bay lights on, but sometimes I know they don't come on or come on at a late time.

HSI/Coleman Hanna floor-mounted blowers never seem to perform well. I have seen 2 sets of them in person and they never seem to do more than relocate some of the water instead of push it off the car.

I agree with the transmission issue. My insurance company gave me a Ford like that one for a few days before I bought my car and it was pretty awful. I actually thought the transmission was defective because it never could decide what gear to go to.

I own a 2014 focus there a lovely car but not a great hill climber and I have the same problem with low speed shifting it's a automated Manuel transmission so it shifts like a Manuel

This is a very good find for a gas station. Hanna-Sherman equipment is extremely durable and this exact tunnel's equipment has been cared for well. Aside from the drying result, HSI tunnels seem to do a good job. There is actually a Chevron gas station in Vallejo, CA that has the exact same setup at this tunnel, though it is in worse shape.

Interesting setup for a mini tunnel maybe they can replace it with a pdq system like a tandem pro touch tandem or a tandem Surfline judging by the size of the bay they put that mini tunnel in

I used to drive a 1996 Ford Explorer a few years ago, and brushed car washes used to bend side mirrors out. Don't think I've had that issue with a 2001 Mercury Grand Marquis I used to drive, and didn't run it through brushed car washes too often. With my 2019 Toyota Corolla, I fold in my mirrors, and don't have to worry about radio antenna.

Ford's PowerShift transmissions are the worst! That's what this rental car has. If I were to purchase a Ford Focus, I would get mine with a manual transmission.

It seemed like a decent compact car, but the transmission really ruined the experience. Any time you're going below 20 MPH (accelerating from a stop, in a parking lot, etc) it's impossible to drive smoothly.

My auntie has a slightly older Ford Focus hatchback.(from around 2012) And one time she was driving through an intersection, and suddenly the car shut off and would NOT start up again. She ended up having to get it towed and the intersection had to be momentarily closed.

It's interesting that this Shell station is still (or was) using the old gray/yellow graphics on the canopy and pumps. I haven't seen a station with the old branding around here for at least 10 years.
