You're probably going to be surprised when I say this Hannah, but I just checked the box office records for this movie and they actually disagree with you. Not only did it surpass it's $255 million dollar budget, but it did even better than the animated film. The animated film grossed 440.1 million dollars while the live-action one grossed 1.266 billion dollars. While I agree that the CGI on the beast wasn't good (I'm surprised they didn't give him a beast suit like the one in the old Beauty and the Beast TV series) and they didn't show enough of Belle as a strong feminist, I like how they added elements from both the book and the cartoon as well as add some original material. In fact, Jon Solo, a guy with a KZbin channel called "Messed Up Origins," broke down why the remake is better than the original: 1. The villain song: the song "Gaston" in the live-action version was actually the version that was supposed to be in the animated film, but the movies was running too longs, so they had to trim it down. Bringing the extended version back in this one works because it flushes Gaston out a bit more as we get more information about his past, not to mention we get to see more of his ego. 2. The plot holes: there were several plot holes in the animated film that Solo pointed out (plot holes I didn't know about, and I had seen that film dozens of time) that the live-action film filled. Plot hole #1: the beast's castle is near the village but the villagers didn't know it exist nor did they notice the people who worked in the castle and lived there were missing, which didn't make sense. The live-action film fixed this problem by having the enchantress place a spell over them, making they forget about the castle and the people inside it. Plot hole #2: The beast has been cursed for 10 years (according to Lumiere in the Be Our Guest song), which would make him 11 when he was cursed by the enchantress. The problem with this was that it makes her unlikeable as she cursed a small child who would probably grow out of his bratty ways. The live-action version fixed this by changing that lyric in "Be Our Guest" to "So Long have we been rusting," and made the beast a full-grown man so the enchantress doesn't get villainized. 3. The Beast: In the deleted song "human again", it is revealed that the beast is not intelligent and can't read, which doesn't make sense because he's been stuck there for most of his life. The live-action film fixed this problem by having the beast be just as smart as belle and have the same interest as her, especially when it came to books. 4. Belle: Maurice is the inventor in the family, not belle. The problem with this is that it leaves no good reason for the villagers to find her odd. In the live-action film, Emma Watson fixed this issue by insisting that she'd be an inventor like her father, which makes the reason for the villagers to view her differently more sense. The guys on cinema therapy brought up a point in the story that works better in the live-action film than the animated one. In the animated film, the entire castle was cursed because of his heartless actions, which is unfair to them because they didn't do anything wrong. The live-action film fixed this by having all of them treat the woman horribly so that her reasoning for cursing everyone in there is justified. There were a couple of things from the book that was added to the film. The scene where Maurice steals a rose from the Beast's castle is in the book and I'm glad they put it in the film because it makes more sense for Maurice to be imprisoned than the reason in the animated film. The beast's movements in the live-action film are more like the book than in the cartoon. In the book, he moves in a more elegant way, whereas in the cartoon he moves like an actual animal. I don't mind either way, they're movements are good overall. Is the live-action film as good as the original? No, but I did like how they added new things to it, all the while keeping it nostalgic.

Regardless of whatever people think of this movie as a whole, I think Dan Stevens deserves some props. He did all of his Beast scenes, including the dance, in a 40 lb motion capture suit and 10 inch stilts. He also trained with vocal coach Anne-Marie Speed at the Royal Academy of Music. He put in the work to learn how to sing Evermore and then got fucked over by the layers of autotune and the mixing to make his voice sound lower and more “beast-like.” I’m still devastated that they did not include a version of Dan singing the song without all the filters on the film’s soundtrack. Anyways, the point is Dan always fully commits to his roles and deserves some respect for it even if the movie itself was not great.

Real talk though, Bella was 100% down to get all close and romantic with him while he was a Beast, me as a a little kid was so confused when he changed back into human and she was okay with it. I felt like she should just look at him and tell him to change back or at least go "Wait, who the hell are you?". It didn't help that I absolutely HATED how he looked like in the original animated movie as a human (and the live action version is... generic kinda good-looking human male A, so better, but still absolutely no fanfare, though I guess it balances out with his beast form being far less changing than the original; both are just more mediocre on their respective spectrums).

I got to talk with one of the sound designers for this movie and what he said to me is that Emma Watson wasn't auto-tuned, but they constantly shifted back and forth between what she sang in studio & the live singing she did (already sounds like a nightmare) and they were doing it almost a week until the premiere. It wasn't because she didn't have a nice voice, but what she sang on set wasn't usable due to background noise or exhaustion from long days. What you're hearing isn't auto-tune, but constant flipping back & forth between studio takes and real life vocals, where the performances were different every-time. He even revealed she had practiced for months on end and she was so upset with how it sounded in the end.

I remember reading this before . Whenever you can see her face on camera , she's singing live , whenever she's facing away , it's the studio . You can actually really notice it in the belle reprise when she sing "there must be more than this provincial life" she turns around and back when she sings"life" and you can hear the cuts on that word. The apparently done it to make the singing look more real rather than lip synced, but by having the actors sing live , the mouth didn't completely match the studio. Her voice is heavily pitch corrected , because they Frankensteined all her vocals together . They did Emma very dirty. They really embarrassed her and it's unfair , because she really took the brunt of the criticism. I think people forget , she wouldn't be the one auto tuning her vocals and wouldn't even be aware until it's release

There's a popular theory that part of the reason that Belle and her father aren't well-liked isn't because they're educated/they make contraptions/etc. it's because they're *different.* The entire village has gone on under the Enchantress' spell for years, unchanging, stuck in a timeloop, Belle even says herself that "every morning's just the same" and all the townspeople are always doing the *exact same things.* Belle and her father *moved to town* sometime after the curse, which makes them unusual and out of place in the unchanging village.

Evermore is one of the best songs from this movie so idk where the hate came from. Also quick explanation: When he says that “she’ll never leave me even as she runs away”, he means she fundamentally changed him as a person and for that the parts she changed will always be with him. It’s in the same vein as when a singer says they can’t recognize themselves after a breakup but in the more positive way.

Fun fact, the scene where Belle is singing in the place where her mother died was actually the one part of the movie that Emma Watson did sing live. The director actually told Emma he would use the playback in the movie version but was lying because he wanted to use Emma's live singing to make the scene more emotional. And it's clearly where Emma's singing is at its best. I honestly never noticed Emma's singing being autotuned and always felt people were exaggerating but you brought up a good point that it doesn't have any vibrato like it should. So while I don't think the autotune is insufferable like others do, I do notice it more now. But now I want a release of the soundtrack with Emma singing without the autotune ASAP.

I completely agree! My favorite by far! They added so much to the movie. They could have still made it a musical (because we all know Lily James can sing) but they went with a more realistic-feeling version where animals can’t talk. Even though I LOVE musicals, I think that choice really worked in their favor. Adding having previously met Kit, getting more time to get to know her mom and dad, and then her step-mother and siblings… it really adds to the story.

At the beginning on the song he says “I close my eyes but she’s still there” what he’s saying is I wish to forget her but I can’t. Then later he says “though she’s already flown so for beyond my reach she’s never out of sight” and “now I know she’ll never leave me even as she fades from view” whats he’s saying is she is physically leaving me, but I will always remember her in my heart and mind. 5 years later and I still feel like I'm one of the only people who truly enjoyed this remake. Maybe it's because I was already such a huge fan of Dan Stevens, and I was excited to see Emma in a new role again... but I loved how they tried to give it some historical context, and even fleshed out some of the plot holes that the animated version just sort of glosses over; why nobody seemed to remember a nearby castle with a Prince, the reason why the staff felt guilty, the enchanted book, and most importantly the callback to the fairytale origins of Maurice stealing a rose for Belle being the cause of his imprisonment! I also enjoyed the way they show Beast's intelligence and education that he would have had, being a Prince. Maybe it's because I work in a bookstore, but falling in love over poetry and literature makes me weak in the knees. Haha. The only thing I wish they would have been able to do was bring in "Human Again" from the musical. THAT would have been amazing to see in this. I also can't get over how Dan Stevens and Hattie Morahan (Agathe/The Enchantress) were reunited in this. They played Edward Ferrars and Elinor Dashwood in an adaptation of "Sense and Sensibility" together. I was so excited when I recognized Hattie in the theater that someone actually shushed me!

it's been a while since I watched the autotune video, and, frankly, it confused the heck out of me. So was Emma autotuned, or was she pitch corrected?
@show-me-orion
@show-me-orion Жыл бұрын
@@phAntasyluvr_04 My understanding is that either Disney didn’t like her performance or the way they filmed (with actors singing live along with their prerecorded vocals) made it impossible to match up the mouths to the singing, with either way resulting in a heavily over-produced sound that was likely pitch corrected (because everyone is) but was also blended from multiple tales and leaving a really artificial sound altogether. Autotune as we think of it is when artists like Cher or T-Pain use a plugin for an effect, not to cover up that they can’t sing, which is totally fine. But that’s different from editing together a track from several takes and picking the best notes, or slightly correcting an off note (pitch correction) which happens to basically everybody and when done well can’t be noticed at all. So if all they were trying to do was pitch correct Emma Watson, they did a bad bad job because it’s so so obvious.

Lol I wish I could say the same. The way they over-explain details like the magic and try to “fix” things from the original that never needed to be fixed in the first place…I don’t like it. Like, we never needed an explanation about Belle’s mother. We already assumed she was dead. And we never needed an explanation for why the Beast was such an asshole. We just assumed he was a spoiled prince who got everything he wanted in life and was never told no. In this way, compared to the original, I actually think the live-action version insults the audience’s intelligence. You can ESPECIALLY see this in the song “Gaston” where LeFou tries spelling Gaston’s name. In the original, he tries, eventually gives up, and starts singing again, but in the live-action version, he literally spells out the joke by saying, “It just occurred to me that I’m illiterate and don’t know how to speeeelll…” and then I’m face-palming because thank you for spelling out the joke for us, we never would have gotten it otherwise. To me the movie comes across as rather emotionless and just a cash-grab, which I guess is what all the live-action remakes are haha

But with the unfolding of the story, the character's bonding/charisma is missing, and the songs are okay. But it would be great if Disney moved along and took a hiatus. While other filming companies create something original with new names and new faces, multi-talented singers, and actors for the parts being written.

I was so busted when I realized they weren’t using the Broadway songs. I had never really LOVED the ideas of the live action remakes, but the one thing I wanted them to do was use the Broadway music. You have the advantage of these gorgeous songs created to tug on heartstrings and don’t use them, and as a result this was the first and last live action remake I chose to see. Evermore has the potential to be pretty (with less autotune) but it literally doesn’t need to exist. If I Can’t Love Her is one of my favorite Broadway pieces of all time, it’s built off that main motif that was in the background music of the film so it fits perfectly, it was the first time a piece of live theater brought tears to my eyes when I saw it onstage. I just wanted to hear their take on it. In the end I’m kinda glad it wasn’t there since so little of the movie’s musical moments were memorable or high quality. On the plus side, Josh Groban has sung both songs now and I am SO happy with both of them. Two gorgeous songs when done by people who have the voice for them.

Hannah, you should defenitely watch the 30th celebration version. It did what this movie couldn't. The voices are amazing, it has strong musical theater vibes and HER DRESS! Even if you hate the whole thing, you cannot hate the dress! It's a freaking jumpsuit with an amazing cape and it is so smooth- PLS HANNAH! Edit: Also we have Josh Groban as the Beast.

I honestly really love this movie. I don’t really understand why a lot of people hated and or didn’t care for it when it came out. But I do love great live action remakes of classic movies especially a Disney Princess movie. Also can’t say enough times how much I hate Gaston. Love the videos! You do an amazing job!

when they go into the Belle's room in the castle and you can hear a bit of the instrumental from "Home" (from the musical) I got so excited. And then that was it, they didn't do the song. I was soo upset because I saw the musical of Beauty and the Beast when I was just 4 and that song has since been my favourite musical number. I was just super disappointed leaving the theatre.

If I’m correct, the reason why beast voice sounds very auto tuned when he sings it’s because they had to lower his voice to make it sound deeper for the Beast voice. Again if I’m correct, he sang it in the tenor key, and since they lowered his voice and put it in a baritone Key.

But why not just hire someone who can actually do it like they do for the stage version?

The writers extended the movie's time to add to the plot. They could have chose to extend on Belle's and Beast's relationship and strengthen her desire to stay with Beast. They could have improved the love story. They could have shown Beast becoming/wanting to be a better person as he fell in love with Belle... So many possibilities. The song "Something There" was used to show these essential plot points in the original movie. It would have been easy to expand the story from this perspective What did the writer's do with their extra time? Include a prologue that hints at the death of Belle's mother, but doesn't actually state Belle's mother died, which was counterproductive as the writer's could have completed this objective with a single sentence. And if the reason was to add more songs... First, actually showcase the talent's voice and stop with the overuse of autotune. Second, there is an entire script of "Beauty and the Beast" written for Broadway with beautiful songs. Pick one of those!

About the Taj Mahal display at 14:06 - I think it's a reference to a shot from the climax of Moulin Rouge starring Ewan McGregor, who is voicing Lumiere in this movie. Also wanted to share that I see how you're working so hard on healing, Hannah. I sense a gentle groundedness in your presence and celebrate that for you. 🌈

I thought it was a reference to Aladdin, along with the way Cogsworth is dressed. In the original animated Beauty and the Beast they did the same during the "Be our guest" song because Aladdin was the next Disney animated film to be released. I thought they did it again here in the live action because live action Aladdin was going to be released after this film, in 2019
