I cant believe it's the 17 episode already, I bloody love this series :) Also as someone who hasn't had a period in over 3 years I'd like to add another reason for missing your period (for long periods of time): prolactinoma. It's a benign growth of the pituitary gland,which produces high levels of the hormone prolactin, causing your cycle to (often) stop altogether. So if you haven't had a period in over 6 months, and all the reasons Hannah mentioned don't apply, you might want to get your hormone levels tested

My cycle varies from 12 to 60 days, and neither of those are exceptions. Usually it's around 32, but in the 12 years I've had my period it's never been regular. My uterus likes to keep things exciting. I have a few somewhat reliable tells, like sore boobs 1-2 weeks beforehand, but mostly I just always carry pads around because I literally never know.
@emericcson1236 жыл бұрын
nokiddingbrainless I THOUGHT I WAS ALONE IN THIS. I was just telling my friends that it’s not out of the ordinary for my cycle to go like two weeks later than it was the cycle before...or two weeks early. It’s also really subject to stress (which then delays it even more because then I’m stressed about the missing period...-_-). I once missed a period for three months in high school due to school testing stress. Fun times. Because why follow a regular cycle and make it easier? My hormones are like “lol fuck that.”

Just a little casual fact for around 3:25 : My mum had two children in the same year, and they (we?) are 9 months and 12 days apart (21 January 2001 to 2 November 2001). Technically, I think my little sister was conceived 12 days after I was born!!
@rossignollyr6 жыл бұрын
Not necessarily, maybe your sister was born a few weeks early. But still, that's quite close in age! As a side note, Jan 21 is the same birthday as my mom and as my best-friend, and Nov 2 is the same birthday as my grand-father (my mom's dad). Funny coincidence. Haha
@crysleach65836 жыл бұрын
rossignollyr actually both my sister and I are around a week late (we looked into it because we were curious). Also that’s such a cool coincidence!! Fyi, they have the same numbers (21/1 and 2/11).

Ok, never mind then. That is absolutely crazy. I was also a week late. I decided to wait until the storm had died and be born on a Sunday at 7 pm. I had to make a grand entry as a first child. Haha But later I was told that being a week late isn't actually "late", it's probably that the doctors had the dates wrong. So much for my ego.

I love this series! I have endometriosis, and my gynecologist’s goal was to stop my periods completely. The pill worked for a while, until I bled for two months straight. I’ve been on the Mirena IUD/coil for about 9 months and I haven’t had a single period the entire time. Which, for someone with endo, is a blessing. Only downside is that I take semi-regular pregnancy tests because I don’t have a period and I get paranoid!
@beth27306 жыл бұрын
I missed so many periods when I was off the pill, it’s the main reason I went back on it. Personally, the idea of a load of hormones in my body outweighed the anxiety of me possibly being pregnant every month. It took me about a year to come to that decision- so if anyone else is struggling with deciding contraception methods- take your time huns! X
@hannahk97126 жыл бұрын
Beth Smith I myself decided to go on the pill for that very reason. I know I'm messing with my body, but i have anxiety about being pregnant even if there is no chance of it, like there hasn't even something happend. So being on the pill and being absolutely save has helped me immensly with having less pregnancy-anxiety, even though it may not be the very best to my young body.

So thankful for an amazing doctor who eased my concerns about all of the things

After going onto the combined pill my periods (I know they're officially withdrawal bleeds but they can still be used as an indication of pregnancy) were super regular, literally down to the same day of the week, for four years. Then one day my period was due and didn't arrive - cue major panic mode. Apparently my body had just decided to shift my period one day later. Whilst I'm still glad to be so regular, some warning would have been nice... Still definitely loving the videos! I've considered coming off the pill occasionally and it's always brilliant to see someone talk as candidly about the human body as you do :-)

I think it’s super important to say that if your cycle is on the longer side, it’s a good thing to get a check up and make sure it’s all working! I didn’t go onto birth control till I was 20 and had vey irregular periods with a long family history of PCOS and ovarian cysts, which terrified me. Once I went on the pill I was like clockwork and even though I came off of the pill I still try and keep a record of what’s up with Mother Nature and her timing. The nurse I had helped hella (thank you NHS!) if you’re worried, just know your body and what’s out of the ordinary for you x

I actually missed a period right before I decided to go on honromal BC (about 5 years ago now) and while I was active with a partner for some reason I wasn't worried lol! I had was under a ton of stress and my diet and daily schedule had changed dramatically and I had never really been regular before either. Hormonal BC gave me back so much control and allowed me to learn patience with my cycle and body too and oh boy did I need that then!! Now I've been super consistent with the withdrawal bleeds of my 21 day pill cycle. I know a lot of people say the pill takes away freedom but I found it really gave me a new ease of mind knowing when and why I would be bleeding

I've got to say that the injection has worked wonders for me - I haven't had a period since Christmas and it's a relief for someone who used to get periods way too close together/taking way too long to end and losing way too much blood for who knows why - or sometimes 8-9 weeks apart and completely unpredictable. It's just nice knowing that for a year or two I won't be getting worried about fainting or having cramps that stop me from moving at all. I would happily be on the injection forever if I could.

The timing of this! I have always had very regular period. Last year I changed the pill that I was on and it was like clockwork. I'd stop taking the pill on the Friday, the period would come on the Monday around midday. It was so practical, I used to take a tampon with me and only put it on at the beginning of lunch break and that was me. Last month I didn't get a period and I was freaking out because it is not something that happens for me, but my pregnancy test was negative. This month I had all the side effects of period (extreme sadness and tiredness) but got next to no blood. I like the idea of waiting three months before consulting your doctor, means you have some sort of pattern to explain to them!

Your series gives me a measure of insight into the world I will never experience. There are times I wish I could take the pain away. But, even if the least I can do is understand the basics of the process I can hopefully be mindful to at least not contribute to the difficulty cycles cause. Learning from your series, HW, helps me to not need verbal confirmation of timing. I can sense when to switch gears and help rather than hinder. I'm not perfect at it, but still learning. Thank you for the insights in this series. I hope you continue to be blessed.

interesting, sort of period-related thing: women going through menopause often have big issues with "flooding". This is because the hormones are all over the place and progesterone will suddenly drop (as opposed to tailing off like in menstrual cycling) and the lining just sheds very quickly. I think it is a big issue that isnt talked about so i found it interesting to hear (and have some warning for when the time comes for me!)
@Agoraphobication6 жыл бұрын
I'm currently having my first "period" - really just light brown discharge - for the first time in 287 days. I was on the implant (which made my hair thin out, made me lose all my curves, and generally made me miserable) and then got back on the combination pill (which I had been on for 15-ish years). The one period I had in between switching methods was AWFUL. I wanted to get back on hormonal birth control mostly because I didn't think I'd be able to deal with the absolutely debilitating cramping every month. I honestly thought about going to the hospital but then realized this is what other women deal with all the time. You're all super heroes. Anyway, I use my BC to skip my period on purpose most of the time, but I missed three pills in a row recently and boom, period.

I obviously wasn't pregnant because I'm a virgin so I thought something ELSE was seriously wrong. I was not in the market for another illness so when it came back I was so happy. but then I got the arm implant and oh my god not having a period for almost 3 years has been amazing. I'm excited as hell to get the next one placed in a couple months as having to deal with periods on top of chronic pain disorders and dislocations and the stress of being disabled for 4 years and only being 19 now is enough to deal with

This video couldn’t have come at a more perfect time than now! I literally just started my period after a small my-period-is-gone-what-is-happening scare 10 days ago. My cycle has been irregular after battling heavy weight loss due to an eating disorder where I didn’t have my period for a year, but it’s usually something between 24-32 days so it could be worse I guess. Over a week or so my period didn’t arrive, and when it wasn’t there on my longest cycle day I got kinda panic-y and took like three pregnancy tests but they all came out negative and then I was stressing out even more and turns out, it’s really boring, that it was probably from stress over the past few weeks and the Gastritis I was battling with. It’s nice that you are providing informations like this! Everyone’s first thought always goes to pregnancy (and you gotta be aware of that of course) but it’s also important too know about the other reasons, especially to not freak out young people who are just starting their sexual journey. Bodies are weird! Especially periods. And people shouldn’t be afraid of that.

I don't remember the last time I missed a full cycle, but definitely about a year ago now, I quit a volunteer position that I really loved but had gotten really toxic, and the stress of leaving and adjusting to life outside of a toxic environment pushed my cycle back about two weeks, because all that stress started right during the ovulation part of my cycle. Once I got the stress back under control, my body just slid right back into its normal(ish) 30-day cycle - just pushed back by two weeks.

i've never been a professional athlete but i was a competitive rower in high school and when you're exercising like i was then (very heavily, five days a week) it does mess your body up but you're right in saying that there are lots of people around you making sure you're healthy while you do that, and when you're a competitive athlete strength is very important, so eating enough to balance out the exercise is key. so (i think) where overexercising can fuck your periods up when you aren't balancing that out, workout schedules for competitive athletes are tailored to make sure they toe the line of not overdoing it and athletes are in general very careful about making sure they get enough calories in so they're staying healthy

I love this series so much!! My period that’s usually pretty regular was just 70 days late and I was completely freaking out but this definitely calmed my nerves a lot

anorexia stopped my period for four years. it's now back, and it's very irregular at times, but I'm glad I have it :D

A point on the stress factor... It is more important to know if you were stressed during ovulation than it is to know if you are stressed when you should get your period. But if you have ovulated you will get your period 2 weeks (aprox) later even if you are stressed. High stress around ovulation can stop ovulation because your body knows it isn't a good time to fall pregnant but once you've ovulated it is game over - no hormones will stop your period if you've already ovulated (except the pregnancy hormone made from your little burrowing embryo). So if you are calm as can be and your period is late, consider your stress levels around 2 weeks previous. Something I learned while trying to track ovulation for planning pregnancy.

My last missed period was when I was breastfeeding, I think it took almost a year for my periods to come back after I had my child. And they've come back quite different, on a shorter cycle and with a special bonus symptom of mid-cycle nausea, so the first time that happened I thought I was accidentally pregnant again! In my late thirties and my body is still throwing new stuff at me, just to keep me interested, I guess. Loving the hornone diaries, keep it up!

I did not realize that chronic illness itself was a reason to miss periods. I went to my doctor about being irregular, and they said it might just be the medications, but i told them even when I wasn't taking anything, I was still sporadic, so they ran some tests. Nothing apparent was wrong. ANyways, Great vid!

This would have been a great video to be shown in school instead of wasting time on triangles and other useless crap. My cycle has never been regular and I didn't find out until I was 21 that it's normal for some women. I also didn't get a period for nearly 2 months after my mum died when I was 16 so there's the stress aspect you talked about. Amazing video as always, really love this series xx

I got the implant last year, I bled for 3 months straight and now my cycle varies from 25-50 days! It used to be like clockwork but I don't get any period pain at all now and it's also very light, so that's nice! I recommend the implant to anyone who might be thinking about it :) (also recommend a menstrual cup, it was particularly handy during those three months)

I was on the combined pill for a bit to regulate my periods, but I suffered from a lot of nausea and dizziness, so I stopped taking them. I had been pretty regular for the last year or so, but then I had to take antibiotics for an infection and it threw it off I think, so we're back to the regularly scheduled "surprise!" periods. My cycle is within the regular limits, but usually on the longer side, over 30 days, although thanks to being on the pill, my periods have now shortened from 7 days to 5 which I am very happy about!

I have the Merina coil as well and have about 3-5 periods a year. It’s great!!!! I had the copper coil and was constantly spotting and had very regular heavy heavy periods that you could almost set your watch by. So the Merina is a freakin joy

I've been extremely regular my whole life, and 5 years on the pill didn't change that. But then I went off the pill almost a year ago and my last period was 10 days late! pretty certain it was stress, and the stress of thinking I was pregnant made it even worse

My period was SUPER out of wack. I haven’t had a period since September and I got pregnant in the beginning of December so I haven’t had a period in 8 months (which is lovely) but I was worried that I wasn’t going to be able to get pregnant because I didn’t know when I was ovulating. Bodies are so weird! Thank you for this video!

I feel as though my cycle was irregular because I am a stress-case by nature or because I was underweight (not from an eating disorder).

I think stress plays a huge role in my cycle. I started university in September and didn't have my next period until mid November when I went home for the first time. Before coming to university, my average cycle was about 34 days. Since September, it has fluctuated from 33 days to 75 days. (by the way, love your top!)
