There's a small Necrophagist easter egg in the video! And here are two more fun facts! 1.ALL and I mean ALL main guitars, so rhythm and leads, were recorded on Harley Benton guitars. I used my Amarok 8 string prototype for all songs. Only used the Ibanez in the video because I prefer playing 6 string guitars, especially when I only need 6 strings in a song. My solos were recorded on the same les paul with the same tone you see and hear in the video! 2.The only reason those fast sweeps in the solo were recorded on the bridge pickup was, because at the time of the recording I couldn't use the neck pickup at full volume. Had issues with my volume pot and I was too lazy to replace it lol. Otherwise I would've used the neck pickup like I do in the video :)

Just getting into Necrophagist by way of Allegaeon, Archspire, Cattle Decapitation and Revocation just to name a few. Stumbled across your channel last night with your MoP at 300 pm vid. New sub BTW. I was curious about the way you hold your pick. I'm recovering from hand surgery and am pretty much starting over. It almost looks like the way alot of jazz players do but at the same time it doesn't. It works though, right? You make this shit look easy!🤘🤘🤘🤘
@KevinHeiderich11 ай бұрын
@@metaldad1967 not sure how jazz players hold their pick haha. The one thing that people rarely notice is that my pick is really parallel to the string, like I hit the strings with the surface flat, no weird angles or anything. Like a lot of people have a very scratchy sounding pick attack because they slightly rotate the pick, so they only hit the string with the tip, instead of the surface. That's what might be different in my playing
@metaldad196711 ай бұрын
@KevinHeiderich Flat? Yet you seem to get no resistance when tremolo picking those fast licks! Are you focused on picking depth? I hope these questions aren't too goofy. At the end of the day it's all about practice practice PRACTICE, right? I believe Roy Clark picked parallel also and he was a MONSTER! Here's a link to a video on backwards picking and the number of gospel and jazz guitarists who utilize it: kzbin.info/www/bejne/o2LchXVuoc6niM0si=msdYQl4V51oHJJIJ Here's the second part: kzbin.info/www/bejne/Y5qyo4iBibibeKMsi=WPTscwItCVTpdjva I saw how you lock your thumb but still seem to have a "standard" picking angle. The backwards picking technique is used by George Benson and most people call it the George Benson technique. Like I said earlier, I'm kinda starting over due to carpal tunnel/osteoarthritis surgery. My range of motion is a bit limited now; they did a scaphoid excision with four corner fusion on my right hand. The pain is gone, now I just have to re-build the strength. I was in a cast for 12 weeks as well as having 3 pins in my hand.

I wrote a comment a few days ago but I must have forgot to press enter. This is incredible dude!! Maybe I've just listened to so many of your videos but first time I heard the audio for Retrospective Monolog I thought the playing(attack and muting) sounded like you. ""My job was not just recording the guitars, but also arranging them into something playable, including all articulations and fingerings" That sounds like an absolute nightmare ha. When you transcribe piano or classical music to guitar and it often ends up in impossible fingering but when you try to change it to conventional fingering the melody can get lost. I'm amazed you did a whole album of tech death. It sounds fantastic. I'm just going to think of this as Necrophagist album 3 where Hannes kept the band going and you're a member. That solo is killer too. Looking forward to checking out the whole album and maybe seeing more playthroughs in the future.

What do you mean in the flow? How are the obscura tab books
@BringerOfBloood11 ай бұрын
The Obscura tab books have each solo at the end of the song in a separate section entirely. E.g. you have Incarnated and then Incarnated Solo. And during the song you just have a marker where the solo comes. It is handy, if you want to just learn a solo, but I dislike it for trying to analyze as you don't have the voices next to each other. @@2174863

The thing I really like about your videos are the detailed descriptions. Thank you for that, I really like to listen to the thought process or any other process that went into a video. Great playing as always! One question: how do you produce such a "picky" pick attack? For example - you're playing sweeps but it sounds like every note is picked -> it sounds really REALLY great!
@KevinHeiderich11 ай бұрын
Thank you! To be honest I could write at least 10 descriptions about that process of that EP. I really had to keep it short and try to sqeeze everything into it that makes sense related to the video. I actually wanted to make an in-depth playing and recording guide that was supposed to come with the tab book where I go through all of it. But I ended up finishing the tab book almost a year after the recording, and I underestimated how much time goes into just editing and finishing an actual tab book. Haha, like I said in a different comment. I hold my pick parallel to the string so the surface of the pick hits the string. A lot of players actually slightly rotate the pick, so they only hit the string with the rotated tip. That will give you a scratchy thinner pick attack. If you hold and play it like I do, with some force, then you get a more percussive "picky" kind of pick attack, where every note pops out. I even have to play thin picks, because otherwise I get too much pick attack. That's why I settled for 0.88mm :)
@gilmeaguitar11 ай бұрын
@@KevinHeiderich ooooooooooooooooooooooooh! THAT MAKES SENSE. Because it's such a specific sound that is produced - thank you for your reply! One more question: what gauge strings are you using? Don't you get like a "spaghetti" feel when playing 0.88 picks in terms of picking?
@KevinHeiderich11 ай бұрын
@@gilmeaguitar The 0.88 are the thinnest picks that don't bend like spaghetti. I would prefer to play 0.73 in terms of sound, but they bend too much so 0.88mm was the best compromise. 1.00mm already have more attack. I play heavier gauges, I think. The les paul is tuned to E standard and has 10-52, the Ibanez is tuned to D standard and has 11-56. The A standard 7 string song on the EP was recorded on 11-56 with a 72 for the A, and the C standard song was recorded on a 68 set on a 26.5 scale lol

Hey Kevin! I had a question and I don't know if you answered it in the description of another video or the tab book but what guitars specifically do you use to record for albums? Is it whatever strikes your fancy on this day / the Harley Bentons you use in the videos or do you have specific guitars you pull out for studio work? Thanks in advance and I really hope to see you land more studio work, you deserve to be known as one of the top working players in the business :D
@KevinHeiderich11 ай бұрын
I added pinned comment with that information. So, all main guitars were recorded with my Harley Benton Amarok 8 string prototype (the one from the last Blotted Science video). Mainly because with that guitar I was able to record all songs in their different tunings (A, D and C standard). Made it a lot easier for Hannes to reamp because all songs have the same guitar. The most important things for me in a studio guitar are buzzing and intonation. Sound to some degree but to be honest, I've never really had any unusable pickups apart from the Ibanez RG8 (they sucked IMO). Buzzing is also not thaaaaat important because I generally raise the action a bit when I set up my guitars for a studio session (not video though, those are my regular set up guitars). So my studio set up actually has a pretty high action, but that way I have almost no buzzing at all in the DI signal. Allows me to hit harder as well. Intonation is the last one. Longer scale is a must on certain tunings. I hate C standard for example. Usually a tuning you'd use with a regular scale. But for the love of god, it sounds like shit when I play it intonation wise. What I did on the one song that was tuned to C standard (Echoes Of Eternity): I just tuned the bottom 6 strings of my 8 string to C standard, like C standard with two additional high strings. That way I could take full advantage of the longer scale on the bottom strings (fan fret). I also used ridiculously tight strings as well (68 for the C). Played like shit but sounded beautiful. Generally I just play with what I have. I currently don't own a guitar over 200€, don't really care. Also, I am a guitar tech, that's my current day job. That makes it a lot easier and that's how I got my Harley Benton (I work for them). One comment Hannes made when I visited him in his studio: "Oh you really do play a Harley Benton". He probably thought I was joking on the phone lol

@@KevinHeiderich Thank you very much for your reply. Is there anything else I will need to buy other than these two things? I'm asking because I don't understand anything about these things. I guess I will spend money on software or something?

@@KevinHeiderich And does it make more sense to buy the 80 ohm model of the headphones? Maybe I'll connect it to the computer and listen to music.

Do I need an 8 string guitar to learn these or can I do it with a seven string? @kevinheiderich

You won't need an 8 string. Two songs are in A standard for 7 string. Two are in D standard for 6 string and one is in C standard for 6 string
