I think your best bet is to move in near the old quarter. It can be noisy, but you'll have a lot of fun. You can walk and eat there, there are museums, cafes and a bunch of other activities

Chiang Mai is cool also - very different ... was there in 1999 so would have changed a bit.. I do remember going to a fascinating temple with the seven stages of buddha...@@SlowOdyssey
