Greindl ist unglaublich, Watson ist unglaublich wie auch Uhl. Man versteht jede einzelne Silbe, so deutlich und klar gesungen! Heute schlichtweg undenkbar!

I hadn't seen this in a while. This is so echt Wien. OMG the cello at 9:55. The mood shift at 18:55, when Hunding approaches. And look at Uhl react to Watson at 1:01:01. This definitely has way more impulse and passion than Kna's Decca studio recording of Act I. Just adjust to Knappertsbusch Standard Time and let it wash over you. Too slow? Listen to it again. Of course Kna's detachment in the studio was the stuff of legends. While he was recording a Strauss waltz with the VPO, some of the orchestra took the repeat and some went ahead. Things quickly righted, but at the end of the take Kna asked "Was that all right?" The producer told him what happened and Kna responded, "Scheisse - do you think anyone will notice?"

Quite apart from the musical qualities of this performance, isn't it satisfying to see the performers beautifully attired? Knappertsbusch especially looks splendid in his bib-front shirt, wing collar, lapelled waistcoat and order.

Greindl is so great. And prolific. There's enough of him on KZbin to keep you busy listening for the rest of your life. For me Fritz Uhl was one of the greatest singer of Wagner in the 20th century. Unfortunately he didn't sing very much in Vienna as other Wagner-tenors like Windgassen and Beirer. I was told, Fritz Uhl was a star in America. I remember very good his Siegmund in november 1963 in Vienna. It was unforgettable. Thanks to him and thanks for the recording. Lg Wolfgang Eder, Vienna

This is one of the main reasons I listen and love this music (and in general classical music) : involvement of the interpreter to the music with his actions on stage. Kna. (b. 1888) was 75 when this performance was given and just check his restlessness@1:05:15. That I love to see at Wand, Karajan, Kna., Celi., Bernstein and many many others conductor or soloist. Then I share the same joy with the lady who gives a standing ovation@1:08:29 [but last pages are way too dragging for my taste anyway]

What a joke reading the complaints below! Whatever shortcomings Uhl has, he's infinitely superior to your average run of the mill tenor who has attempted to sing this rep in the past 25 years, with an exception for Mr. Kaufmann whose voice is only an average sized instrument in the first place. AND even this orchestra can no longer play this music with this kind of passion and precision anymore. Could that be because there are no more conductors who know their stuff?
@douglasmurphy91277 жыл бұрын
agreed mas this is definitive the mighty knappertsbusch
@davidrichardstanhope6 жыл бұрын
Agree absolutely. Three singers with every note clear and accurate. Today's failings have a lot to do with young voices not sufficiently trained for such strenuous roles. Vienna Phil loved Knappertsbusch because he hated rehearsing which, with an orchestra like this, produced great excitement in performance.
@douglasmurphy91275 жыл бұрын
dont know as much about the soloists but knappertsbusch was the greatest interpreter of wagner

Hai veramente raggione.

That very slight bobble (A genuine crack would have been disastrous.) on the High-A came and went in an instant. That's what having a rock solid vocal technique does.
@seanmchugh29811 жыл бұрын
Folks, Uhl is clearly not dramatically secure and his ideas about projecting the role get the better of him and more disciplined musicality- there is waywardness instead of Wagner's inspiration speaking for itself. Watson is pretty solid with her wonderful tone and Knap has the paragraphing and measure of the music's inevitable sweep and monstrous power.
