One point, I think, of that throat-singing - as well as the scene it accompanies, of human sacrifice and the anointing of the troops with the victims' blood - is that the Sardaukar are far more than the Emperor's elite shock troops. They're a whole culture of their own, with rituals and customs developed over centuries or even millennia.
@LordCommander-ui2fw2 жыл бұрын
Pretty much. The Sardaukar aren't so much an army as they are an entire people dedicated to one goal-the destruction of House Corrino's enemies. The descendants of criminals, traitors, and assorted scum pressed into service and, below the thundering skies of Salusa Secundus, converted into the most loyal and lethal warriors humanity had ever seen.

@andrewpellman6605 Жыл бұрын
After reading the books my opinion is the ones in the movie are scarier. For one they seem more alien in the movie, and comparing how they do in combat compared to the books: Book: Fremen can kill 3-5 Sardaukar before dying Film: The one fremen we see fight a Sardaukar kills one before falling (I know theres the prescient battle sequence but we can only really see Paul, but that doesn't count "Kwisatz Haderach" and all.) Book: Duncan Idaho kills 19 Sardaukar before being overwhelmed. Film: Duncan kills 7-9 of them.

in the past and perhaps the strongest warriors that have ever existed in dune were the GINAZ masters as they fought directly against the melee killing machines and won, with superhuman abilities one of them possibly killed more than 20 sardaukar and escaped.

I think part of the throat singing wasn't just to demonstrate the ritual of induction of the Sardaukar, where they are annointed with the blood not of human sacrifice but of *failed Sardaukar trainees.* (They believed that the blood of their weaker brethren strengthened them further). It was also to demonstrate that the Sardaukar had their own sort of Black Speech, a language only they understood. The poster below that says that the Sardaukar have ttheir own culture, customs, and religion is dead on - they are, for all intents and purposes, religious fanatics whose god is the Emperor.
@VoiceOfTheEmperor2 жыл бұрын
(I saw your post and had to copypasta this. I apologize.) I will die on this world. I cannot tell where this conviction comes from. Whatever birthed it is a mystery to me, and yet the thought clings like a virus, blooming behind my eyes and taking deep root within my mind. It almost feels real enough to spread corruption to the rest of my body, like a true sickness. It will happen soon, within the coming nights of blood and fire. I will draw my last breath, and when my brethren return to the stars, my ashes will be scattered over the priceless earth of this accursed world. Armageddon. Even the name twists my blood until burning oil beats through my veins. I feel anger now, hot and heavy, flowing through my heart and filtering into my limbs like boiling poison. When the sensation - and it is a physical sensation - reaches my fingertips, my hands curl into fists. I do not make them adopt this shape, it simply happens. Fury is as natural to me as breathing. I neither fear nor resent its influence on my actions. I am strong, born only to slay for The Emperor and The Imperium. I am pure, wearing the blackest of the black, trained to serve as a Spiritual Guide as well as a Warleader. I am Wrath Incarnate, living only to kill until finally killed. I am a weapon in the Eternal Crusade to forge Humanity's mastership of the stars. Yet strength, purity and wrath will not be enough. I will die on this world. I will die on Armageddon.

There's a folklore that in Tuva throat singers die early, but this hasn't been backed up scientifically. see Kongar-ol Ondar, a Tuvan throat singer credited with popularizing the centuries-old musical tradition of his homeland to Western audiences, died on Thursday after emergency surgery to treat a brain hemorrhage, friends said. They did a great job in this movie, in a very short amount of time, with establishing the fanaticism of the Sardaukar. They are trained on a planet with a very harsh environment, and are loyal only to the Emperor. The ferocity as warriors is one of the main reason the reasons the emperor is able to hold onto power. Their training parallels that of the Fremen on Arrakis, also a very harsh environment. This will come into play much more in the second movie as the Fremen and Sardaukar clash.

To my knowledge, the Sardaukar in the movies are accurate to the book, and are fanatical devotees to the emperor, and are a religious cult of warriors, strengthened by all but enhancement like space marines. If an elite troop had ever been inspiration for the space marines, it's the Sardaukar.

No one makes Sardaukar throat chanting like they did in the 70s. It's 2022 and I'm still listening to the old throat Sardaukar throat chanting - the best of the Sardaurkar throat chanting.

This is kind of wierd even when considered within the context of Frank Herbert's Dune books. The Sardaukar, as well as most other Armies of the Great Houses, all had their own unique battle languages. House Atreides' battle language was Chakobsa, which has its origins on ancient Earth. The point of all battle languages is to be simple, and clear, and easily understood even under the toughest, noisiest battle conditions, with unambigous sounds, words, and phrases that can not be misinterpreted as other sounds or phrases. It should be easy to learn, both for listening and for speaking. This Sardaukar language violates those principles. But it sounds cool and mysterious.

How do you know its the battle language? Also track is reversed, maybe its reversed for them aswell...
@arighteousname5882 Жыл бұрын
@pxpq bevuase it's their battles language. That doesn't mean that this chant is their battle seeing as though it's being sung to the ancestors based on the Mongolian Thoath singing that it's derived from. The language that the individual Sardakur and the general that is speaking to Pieter in this scene is their battle language

@@arighteousname5882 I always assumed that it was derived from altai throat singing due to the "Padishah Emperor" title, that title was used by the Ottomans.

that's a fair point! i can only speculate as I've only seen the film, but perhaps the singing is ONE of the Sarduakar's languages; similar to how an uneducated pikeman on a crusade listens to Latin hymns before setting out. but again, i can only offer my own headcanon conjecture. your incredibly well-worded point stands! hah
