Man, I needed to hear the rant, “into the mists of a czechoslovakian field” is exactly the vibes I got from so many of the Spitfire collections. I damn near dropped the money on the Hans pack thinking it’d be different. Thank you.

Wtf 😄 What is so speceial abut our field mists? We are not in Transylvania. And yeah. I really dont like most of Spitfire stuff since they started. They being super overrated by fanboys on forums everywhere. They are releasing tons of half baked libs for full blown libs. I wish they rather came with fewer polished products
@producewithjt6 жыл бұрын
The sound is fabulous! Clearly, the UI focused on simplicity instead of usability which is a drag. I also find the sound to be actually very close to Zimmer's latest iconic scores such as the Dark Knight stuff or Interstellar. Great video Daniel!
@dannydimercurio5776 жыл бұрын
Spitfire: They can make great sounding samples, but can't script a decent legato system to save their lives. These strings honestly react like a Korg M1 synth from the 90's. There is no engine that drives transitions between note to note, just snapshots of beautifully captured samples with really expensive mics. That's great and all, but only if you expect to write lethargic, paddy stuff. Still haven't seen a library as versatile as Cinematic Studio Strings or Berlin Strings to this day. They are the only ones I can think of that have nailed the whole legato thing, and sound great out of the box. I love HZ and was looking forward to this library, but I can't get over the awkwardness of the note transitions. I appreciate you recording videos like this Daniel. You're a great guy and exactly what this community needs in today's day and age.

Danny DiMercurio Have you tried the NI Symphonic Series? Honest question
@dannydimercurio5776 жыл бұрын
I can't say that I have, but I have heard it and seen a few demos and I think it is definitely a capable library! I like that they offer Divisi like LASS (another library I've yet to try) and I think that is a fantastic idea that I wish more libraries adopted. Basically, the main thing that separates a decent library from a great one in my opinion is the legato engine. I can't help but ask myself, "Could I at least play something at a moderate tempo, like the theme from E.T?" If so, it passes. Out of the libraries I have, I know that this can be done with Berlin and CSS. I know it's a rather silly test to see if one line can be played on a string library, but I notice a trend with sample developers, where they release a video demoing their own product but they beat around the bush. In other words, they know quite well what isn't strong about their product, so most of the time they won't even show you those things. What they will show you are slow Sul Tastos and harmonics, arcs, even shorts like spiccato or staccatissimo; but even if they show you Legato patches, they're quarter notes at 80 bpm. Never moderate or faster speeds. If you are in the market for a sample library and you want to do more than make some slowly evolving chords, then you have to try and not get sucked in by the beautiful sound of the samples themselves, but how they transition from note to note, and how natural do those transitions sound. There are libraries out there I wish I didn't buy. They sound fantastic, but they're so slow, the transitions between notes are awkward, and to me make them unusable. I made many mistakes purchasing libraries for the wrong reasons, and if I can help someone in their researching process and save money, I'm a happy camper. Musicians get screwed enough as it is.
@DD-sw1dd6 жыл бұрын
True. I'm not nearly at the level that would require high $$$ top end orchestral libraries. Realistically I won't spring for the individual $500 NI Symphony Series Ensembles or the $1000 bundle. I've been looking at the $400 NI Symphony Essentials bundle, Spitfire Albion ONE, and the Symphobia Orchestral Essentials. You just never hear much about the NI Symphony Series since, I'd assume, NI is kinda glossed over in the orchestral domain when looked at next to dedicated orchestral companies like ProjectSAM, Spitfire, etc.
@Fyrlink6 жыл бұрын
But on the contrary the grid in the Olafur Arnalds Chamber Evolutions library by Spitfire is incredible (and inspiring with so many different choices in the grid). The legato on their products however is pretty lackluster though I will say.

Daniel, wonder if you agree...a suggestion to Spitfire, or maybe just begging all string library makers... A string library of just shorts. Spiccattos to Marcatos with in-depth sampling on a one mod wheel setting. Chamber to large sections. Zimmer phrasing to Baroque phasing. (Gladiator to the Four Seasons) Different types of attitudes of short note string playing, maybe have five classic composer types (ie.Bumblebee from Jablosnky) and an example phrase played live, then the short note kit to replicate the classic example phrase. Up Down samples, ability to repeat ONE pitch in 16ths with some humanity…using all the attack. Just shift it up in time. Close miked stereo sampling with tree and hall.

I agree with your comments. This review is three years old so I don't know if the recent 60Gb update has made the library more "Hans Zimmer" i.e. big and loud. Like you that's what I was expecting. Quiet I have plenty of but I want is epic loud. I hope the direct involvement of creators like Charlie Clouser in the production of samples delivers more what people expect. Maybe Hans Zimmer wasn't sufficiently involved in the performance/recording process of this Strings library. Hopefully the approach to Hammers has addressed these concerns.

I have had the library for a couple of days, and to me it is a little bit of a dissapointment, it uses a lot of ram if you want to get those big sounds, and some of the the quiet patches are mixed at extreme a low volumes. and the legato is not sounding like legato it sounds like its broken. allso on the violins if you set the release time a little short they allmost go up half a note when you release the key. it has some upsides with some of the stereo field on shorts when you stack violins and violas and they are very well recorded, and has a lot of mic possitions you can play arround with.

From what I've seen here, I've actually come to the conclusion its a great sounding library with great stuff in it, that's probably a bit overpriced. Because fucking yes I would use that bottle mic. I _love_ the sound of those soft articulations played by so many players, it's gorgeous -- maybe it's the music I like listening to and making suiting it more, who knows. And I don't even disagree with many his points made during the stream. I very much agree with the UI being bad and inconvenient, and the inconsistent articulations being... strange, and annoying. I don't agree that if you have Albion V Tundra, you don't need these soft articulations. The sound of 60 cellos playing softly is nothing like any of the articulations of the low string in Tundra, which has a lot more performance in it -- creaks and squeeks and other eccentricities to it. It's what makes that library unique. Not the same at all. So while I don't know what is supposed to specifically make this library 'Hans Zimmer Strings' other than marketing, rather than 'Super Many Strings Library,' I love what I've heard and saying its what no one wants is silly.
