@@willlyon7129 Yup. That's what i was gonna say. The image of the wicked step sisters, cutting off their toes and heel... It just stuck with me as a child. And gave me a grim, morbid sense of satisfaction. That justice had been served. As opposed to the more family friendly versions, where Cinderella forgives her step mother and step sisters, to some degree, and allows them to be castle servants. That's no justice. Haha. 😊

So true. I always had a difficult time wrapping my head around how any parent could do that to their own child. But then again... When I was a child, my father threatened to leave me in the middle of nowhere whenever he lost his temper with me; more than once, he even went as far as to drive me to a barren stretch of land, and pushed me out of the car. I was so scared, and couldn't stop crying. He only let me in and brought me home when he had calmed down. My mother tried to protect me from him, but on more than one occasion, he did that whenever she wasn't at home. I have never forgotten those days, nor have I ever forgiven him for what he did. He may have been my father, but I wish my mother never married him.

No living near a river. And he doesn't understands the trade of hunting. Or worse, they are in an area in Central Europe were all the deer had been hunted and the river was baren of fish. Being too close to civilization on long settled lands could mean that the area mostly a craftsman community rather than a farming one. Meaning they need to import food from other towns.

This version is like an Irish Story. It repeats the same thing twice for no discernable reason, has several tangents, and when you think it's over a random duck shows up, everything is great and the evil mom is dead with no explanation.

I have a German friend who was raised by his grandmother in a very small village in the Harz mountains, the story's she told him while growing up was so horrible, he still had nightmares at twenty when camping. He was born on December 25, guaranteed to make the water boil when baptized in old horror movie's. His German mother married a American soldier based there and he came to America at ninteen where I met him. I always wondered just what those stories were that frightened him like that, he wouldn't talk much about it. Just a vague mention of nameless slimy things in the forest, some kind of Ancient evil. Reminded me of Lovecraft. Apparently, German foke story's can get very dark and twisted, in the sparsely populated area he grew up in. I used to kid him about the Preist dropping dry ice in the water when he was baptized. A great friend, but with that gloomy brooding typical of Germans.

Some stories are family specific, or, are stories that were adjusted to suit the needs. When I was little an uncle told me that his finger (don't know how he lost it) was missing because he stuck it up his nose and they also stuck a long needle (syringe) up his nose into his brain to pull out the snot... because he didn't like to blow it and instead sucked it up, don't know that there's a word for this in english, as there frequently isn't for specific german words. They would tell you shit like this just to make sure you wouldn't do something. It wasn't reactive, you didn't even have to do a deed to "deserve" a story like this, haha. Another time, I was about meh, 4 I believe, it was st nicks day (nikolaustag, december 6th) and I was at an aunts and the other cousins about my age were there and of course nikolaus(st nick) came, but with his dreaded helper knecht ruprecht, almost a dark version of saint nick, dressed in raggedy garments. The story always went the good kids would get nuts, oranges, apples and if you were lucky some chocolates, but the bad kids, however, would be stuffed in the jute sack and either beaten or just straight up taken away. I don't know what I did that year to deserve it or if the grown ups thought this shit was funny at the time.... compared to "kids nowadays" (and I can vouch for this, I have a kid) I was an angel... Anyway, they did put us in the sack (or at least me, that I remember. How would you forget that!) And whacked me with a stick while I was in there. Not really hard but it scared the absolute shit out of me. There's a photo of me, horrified, crying (ugly crying) cowering on the couch next to my other cousins that was taken that day. Now I think it's hilarious. I wish we were back in germany so I would have a knecht ruprecht around to scare my kid straight lmao. There were lots of stories that don't immediately come to mind at the time, if I sat down and had a long think about it and probably consulted my mom, I'm sure we could collectively remember some more stuff. Also, our house, my grandmas house, is 100% haunted. The house was built by my great grandfather who was a stone mason. Built the whole house himself, can you imagine such craftsmanship (he built 3 houses with the help of his sons, also stone masons)? But in that generation it was common to die at home. And at home is where they stayed. Lights going on and off, not talking flickering here I'm talking straight up flicking of a switch. Footsteps upstairs when everyone was downstairs. Seeing a face when walking past a dark window, the tv being on and static, etc.... and of course just always sensing they are all there. Once, I swear to god this is true, I was asleep in my bedroom at my grandmas house (was a teenager then, I lived with her for some years), something ran through my room at night. About the size of a toddler judging from the sound of the footsteps and it stopped next to my head. I was of course under my covers, stopped breathing as I did when I was scared shitless, and just about ready to shit a brick and die a premature death by heart attack. This seriously really happened. No I wasn't drunk, nor high, nor had I watched a particularly influential horror flick that day or week. It just happened. More freaky things have happened to me in my life... I don't mind the spirits in the old house -for the most part-, they're my family. One that creeps me out though, is the silent uncle, my grandmother's brother whom she took care of, he always came to her house to eat, then went back to his house (right next to my grandma's, she has 3 houses built by her father that are arranged in a U shape, enclosing our yard between them). He also died at home and I pretty much saw it as a kid. I remember they brought him out and he was in our backyard sitting on a chair and I saw him and knew he was dying. You could just feel it in the air. He always screamed at me for random things even though otherwise being silent. In retrospect he always did it to keep me safe, but I feel like he enjoyed it a bit too much 😆 Those are just a few stories of my life back home. I miss home so much and am hoping to move back soon. My son needs to meet his great-grandmother and german side of the family after all

I have heard this story countless times but the whole affair with the duck and the riches is new to me. The versions I know all pretty much just ended after the witch had been cooked. Also in the version I know the mother is not that malicious especially but both parents decide on abandonding the children.

Ik this is late. But I had always learned that the “mother” was a step mother. Yet in this interpretation it seems to be the biological mother. It is pretty common for the Grimm Brothers to portray the step mother as evil but not the real mother.

The step mother was changed from their actual mother by the brother's Grimm in many of their stories. Also, it is nice that although the step mother was evil....Gretel was the heroine.
