Well thank you: you answered a question I had that I didn't find anyone discussing. That is the fact that the generator and the oscope can function at the same time. That makes it considerably more useful for some classes of us. Very good video.

I have the 2D42 model and once I cleaned the probes with a 91 percent alcohol solution I found the response times and accuracy improved. I believe there is some type of protective coating on the probe that slows the connections. I clean all my new probes now.

A comment on the cursors: He demonstrated the "Time" cursor. When you are on the menu choices for the cursor, you can choose "Time" OR "Volt". "Volt", of course, gives you two horizontal cursors to measure amplitude. It seems like you can't have both types at once. Also, for the "Volt" cursor you can select channel 1 or 2. This is necessary because you might have different vertical sensitivity settings so the calculations from the cursor positions would be different for the different channels. For the "Time" cursor, you can also select Channel 1 or 2, but I can't see that it makes any difference if you select channel 1 or 2 because, obviously, both must use the same time base.

Thank you for the video. Very useful info. I own one and i am mostly satisfied about it. There are some of obvious issues. Multimeter response is slow and not enough accurate. The oscilloscope is show noise. Channel 2 is influenced by the internal signal generator but in general is more noisy. If you can live with it, it a nice small and not expensive toy.

I had to re-upload the video to fix the video formatting issue (black boarder) noticed when I initially uploaded the video a few hours ago. Unfortunately the comments from the previous video could not be ported over.

Yesterday received the HDS272 Owon. Pretty impressed with it. Overall the specs look better. I could not get the software to work on a window 7 laptop though. but it did recognize it as a storage device and I was able to download four stored waveform with 8K buffer size. For a portable 2 Channel 70 MHz scope and generator I am really impressed.

Awesome! From what I could see the Owon scope uses a totally different FPGA and DMM chip. The DMM spec is definitely much better (20,000 counts). I am wondering if you have noticed anything different than the Hantek I'd shown for the scope and AWG functionality? BTW, on the Hantek the USB is implemented with the STM32 and it shows up as an STM32 device.

@@KerryWongBlog As a quick summary of my first impressions: HDS272S has the same battery configuration and charger. I do not believe the batter life is comparable. After about 4-5 hours of use the battery was almost gone I believe you said the Hantek has 10+ hour battery life. Batteries were included with charger. The stand is exactly the same. The overall feel is somewhat plasticky but is very solid. You will not be getting Fluke quality here. The Oscilloscope ease of use and quickness was noticeable very intuitive for Electrical Engineer which I liked. Auto is faster than what I saw on the your video. My signal from the AWG is stable and the scope did not show jitter. I have a Spectrum Analyzer but maybe later I will test the fidelity. The DMM seems faster than what I saw on the video. The AWG does not have a noise waveform and cannot be programmed(Check this). But the selection is good with 14 bit like the Hantek. 2V vs 1V for diode test so better. 3.5 vs 2.8 inch display so better but same resolution. 320 x 240. Capacitor range larger. The AWG and oscilloscope work independently so can connect to view and switch back and forth like you did in your video. I think the menu structure is better and overall more professional. Overall I would say faster and better but you pay for that with lower batter life. Which is fine with me I would take that trade. The SAVE button will save Four 8K waveforms. I was only able to download these when the Device was configured as a Storage device to the computer. There is a USB mode in the menu to do this. The software is not that important to me because I have a precision lab scope but the ability to save and download waveforms for later is. As an Electrical Engineer I would say both of these scopes started off from the same original design but the OWON is one version ahead of the Hantek. Hope this helps. Keep up the good work.

@@jfcrow1 Thanks for your detailed accounts! It does sound like Owon has a better implementation (20,000 counts DMM versus 4,000 counts, fused 10A measurement range, 14bit DAC for AWG versus 12bit DAC). The only thing I am surprised about is the lack of PC software for Owon. I guess Hantek wins that one as you can use the software to create your own arbitrary waveform.

Thanks for the video. Saving the 2D72 settings is rather (very) obscure with the manual, and what is saved and what is not at power down. The trigger settings seem to always wake up in auto mode.

I just got one of these an noticed what I think is a user interface error. If you use the generator and turn on its output (it's "Status Indicator" being a green circle then coming on on the connector symbol on the AWG generator screen) and then switch to the oscilloscope screen and then turn it off. It will turn back on the oscilloscope screen as it should because that's what you last used. But if you then change to the AWG screen the green "status indicator" will be on indicating the output is turned on, but it is actually off. You have to press the Run/Stop button once, and then again, to actually turn it on. So it incorrectly indicates the output is active and it isn't. If you have the AWG screen showing with the output on and turn the Hantek power off and back on, it comes back up in the AWG screen as it should, the output will be off, AND the green "status indicator" will be off as it should be.

It seems like the wave forms displayed are not symmetrical on the zero line of the Y axis. Mine seems to be the same. The other issue is mine seems to wig out occasionally while viewing a fixed waveform for a while and adds a spike or shows a frame on the screen of a faster horizontal sweep time for a split second on the scope screen before going back to proper wave from. Mine also seems to have the wobbling wave form too.

Hey, never float the oscilloscope man, what if you put the gnd/earth clip to the live or any high voltage, now all your chasis and gnd/earth parts have this voltage level and they are exposed to you now 😅. I got that from guys working in high voltage field and it makes sense. Of course one can do so but it easily can happen you touch the oscilloscope's earth parts, one does not pay so much attention to this part, more to the DUT. Edit: ok you mentioned that issue but only related to shorts, not to schocks 😅

Seems like the OWN HDS272S would be a better option? The 10amps is fused and the multimeter accuracy is higher

Would be curious to see if anyone had done a thorough review of the HDS272S and see how the oscilloscope/AWG functionality compares to the Hantek. By looking at the teardown pictures on EEVblog it looks like that while the internals are largely the same, they used a different FPGA and as you mentioned, different DMM chip.

Looks like a well priced handy scope that is not mains earth referenced. A feature that seems to be required often in my garage. The bangood page talks about software and usb connectivity. Curious if it can be used as a long term data logger or computer controllable via usb. Thanks for a great review.
@KerryWongBlog

Yes, the software is quite usable. You can control all the functionalities of the meter from the computer software. The DMM software logs data continuously at a rate about once per second. You can save the result in a CSV file which is quite convenient.

Hi Kerry. Thank you for your detailed explanation of the instrument. It was very helpful to me. I used to work with analog scopes. I see that you have the abundant knowledge of the scopes. I bought a Hantek 2D72 /AWG. At the beginning I was able to adjust the probe at 10x with a screwdriver given with the device for the correction of the square wave at 1kHz. Now I cannot do it anymore, the adjustment on the probe useless and the square wave in the 10x mode has a high peak about 13.5V (27V peak to peak) at the positive and the negative raising edges. But at the 1x, there is no problem with shape of the square wave, I was getting correct shape of square wave. I tried it same adjustments with second probes, no change, same as I just explained. This issue happened after connecting a T adapter to share the square output of AWG with both channels of scope. Could you help me how to correct this issue / fault? Thank you in advance...
@KerryWongBlog
@KerryWongBlog 2 жыл бұрын
Does this happen two both channels? As these channels are independent even if you somehow damaged one channel, it would be highly unlikely you would have the exact same issue with the second channel.

@@KerryWongBlog Thank you for your fast response. I solved it. It is my mistake : I connect the probe AWG out and feed to signal through the channel 1 and channel 2. In this situation the adjustent is useless. When reverse the connection it gets OK.

I mentioned that in the video. It's powered by 2 18650 cells, with excellent battery life. Although not specified, it would last more than 14 hours continuously with the backlight set to high when fully charged.
