Obeying Torah and doing mitzvahs is good. Where it goes wrong is when you depend on that obedience to save your souls when God says all our righteousness is as filthy rags. We can never be obedient enough, good enough, righteous enough, Holy enough to save ourselves via our own efforts. If that were possible the necessity of a Messiah would be non-existent (regardless of who you think Messiah is). We need both God's grace and God's mercy, every second of every day, for without God, we should not be able to even take another singular breath. If not for God's provision of the lamb and His mercy through that provision, not one of us would live long upon the earth or even see another day. Think about that a moment...
