hanuma anuma - ragam sarasaangi - mangalampalli balamuralikrishna

This is a recording of the krithi "Hanuma Anuma" written and composed by Dr.Mangalampalli Balamuralikrishna, in the ragam Sarasaangi. The interesting aspect of the composition is that the tricky use of the swaraksharam "ma" makes one feel that the composition is in dharmavathi (more when listened to separately).

No doubt, a Gem amongst his own Saahithyams. This particular kacheri is the one, broadcast by A.I.R. Radio Sangeetha Sammelanam, thro' National Programme of music, on Saturday, 19/11/1988 - if I remember correct, the timing was 10 pm to 11.30 pm. Mysore Sri Nagaraj was on the violin and Srimushnam Sri Raja Rao on the Mrudhangam (as available in this share too ). Thanks for sharing this recording.

Dr BMK Krithi A unique aspect of this Sarasangi piece is that as many times as the syllable maa occurs in the song, the corresponding swaram is madhyamam. Hanuman is the musician of musicians, Balamuralikrishna observed as he explained what prompted him to write this song. It is the 3rd rāgam in the 5th chakra Bana. The mnemonic name is Bana-Go. The mnemonic phrase is sa ri gu ma pa dha nu. Its ārohaṇa-avarohaṇa structure (ascending and descending scale) is as follows .. ārohaṇa: S R2 G3 M1 P D1 N3 S avarohaṇa: S N3 D1 P M1 G3 R2 S This rāgam uses the swaras chathusruthi rishabham, antara gandharam, shuddha madhyamam, shuddha dhaivatham and kakali nishadham. By definition, Sarasangi, a melakarta rāgam, is a sampurna rāgam (has all seven notes in ascending and descending scale). It is the shuddha madhyamam equivalent of Latangi, which is the 63rd melakarta scale. Sarasangi has a few minor janya rāgams (derived scales) associated with it, of which Kamala manohari and Nalinakanti are popular.
