AARSHIN KARANDE, senior disciple of Mewati Gharana luminary SANDEEP RANADE "NAADRANG," offers a rendition of Rāga Jog on the occasion of Hanuman Jayanti (April 6th, 2023). This bandish was written and composed by Pandit Jasraj-ji.
Rāga Jog is an ancient melody and compound of rāgas Dhani and Tilang. It may have been created by Haji Sujan Khan of the Agra Gharana, a contemporary of Miyan Tansen in the Court of Mughal Emperor Akbar. The tonal and emotional dynamism and signature employment of two third-notes (shuddha and komal gandhar) in Rāga Jog has made it one of the most popular rāgas of the past century. Some versions of this rāga employ both seventh notes (shuddha and komal nishad). This rāga served as the foundation for A. R. Rahman's titular hit film song, "Dil Se Re."
Rāga Jog has traditionally been lent to either devotional or romantic textual themes. This bandish uniquely captures the bhakti attitude in its subject of Lord Hanuman, the Hindu monkey-headed god prevalent in the Ramayana. This bandish was composed by Pandit Jasraj-ji for the annual Sankat Mochan Festival in Benares.
This rāga and bandish are presented humbly as an offering to the spirit of divine trickery represented by Lord Hanuman. 🙏

The speaker describes his love for the youthful Lord Hanuman, the beloved son of Anjani who set Lanka on fire. Lord Hanuman - who rendered Lord Rama, lifted the Earth, saved Lakshman, whose very name relieves suffering - sever me from misfortune!
