Perhaps in the USA for awhile.. u may be right about that ! but not around the world doing huge stadiums when Queen became the greatest.. I too "lived thru it" in the 🇺🇸 , but Queen toured around the world & they weren't as homophobic everywhere else like our USA was/is. Well, let's not have a pissing contest over the subject, Steve & Journey were a great part of our lives for certain. ! 🤗

Back when gas was cheap, in the 1950s to the 1970s, it was common in small towns for young people to socialize by driving up and down the main street of a town, stopping at the local drive-in restaurant or theater along the way. This song was written about someone coming back to their home town and trying to relive their glory days. Perry wrote it about his home town of Hanford, California. There is a great live performance of this song in the 1983 Tokyo concert.

When Steve left Journey, he has said he was Toast and told the rest of the Band he just couldn’t do it anymore, add too this his beloved mother had passed while they were on the Raised On Radio Tour. When Steve got the message his Mum was nearing the end of her battle with a from what I believe was some sort of of painful Neurology disease. They were extremely close and it was she who always encouraged him to join Journey. Steve had been in LA trying too break into the world of music and the band he was with had a record deal, and just when they were about to start recording, their Bass player was killed in a car accident. So Steve decided to go home where his Stepdad give him a job fixing Turkey coop’s. He’d thrown up his hands and thought it was a sign that he wasn’t meant to be in the music world. Then one day his Mum took a phone call from Herbie Herbert, Journeys manager asking him to come and spend a week with the band and see what would happen and by the way the band was not at all happy about this. However Herbie told them that’s the way it was going too be and too get used to it. So with his Mums encouragement he rang Herbie back and told him he couldn’t afford to, had bills to pay etc. So Herbie offered to pay for him to come out but it was his Mum who convinced him to try one more time , so Steve went and the rest as they say is History. That was in 1977. Also can I just say about Steve’s solo music, I don’t think you’ve dug deeply enough into it, yes Oh Sherri was good, however the song’s Strung Out, She’s Mine and Foolish Heart are real stand outs on his Street talk Album he recorded in 1984 and then For The Love of Strange Medicine in 1994 is another underrated Album, while a lot of the songs on FTLOSM are ballads, they are beautiful. So that’s just a little bit of history for you. 🎼❤️🇦🇺❤️🇬🇧🕺🏻💃🎸☘️

Steve said that his hometown was the inspiration for this song. The cool kids in town would drive their hot rod cars on main street on weekend nights to show off. Occasionally kids from neighboring towns would drive over and fights would happen. Think Anerican Graffiti movie 🙂. This is how Steve saw the drivers whose time had past but they hung on to their youth. Another great Journey song and performance by Steve!

Oh you've got to experience the live in Tokyo version of Still They Ride. This song is so beautiful, Steve wrote this about his hometown high school days when teens cruised and raced their cars. But in this version Steve takes it to another worldly level and just extends his vocal range beautifully, and he was sick with the flu at this concert! And I agree with you about all the other singers who are praised for their vocals, and I'm a big fan of all of them, still vocally none comes close to Steve Perry, the Voice and the greatest of all time.

Freddie and Elvis were / are more celebrated for their showmanship, IMO. Freddie (awkwardly) strutted across the stage, pumped his fists a lot and interacted with the crowd, which was cool and new back in the 1970s. (But he was pitchy and couldn't control his vibrato.) Queen also had those adolescent songs that are still played every day in sports stadiums , arenas and gyms worldwide. (We Will Rock You / We Are The Champions). Girls loved Elvis' droopy eyes, pouty lips and swinging hips. Parents hated him, so that made kids and young adults love him even more (like The Beatles). He was accused of singing "black music", so that drew in black audiences. When he started adding gospel songs to his collection, he drew in those Christians who had previously demonized him. Elvis was also in a lot of movies. Both Freddie's and Elvis' legacies grew significantly after they passed away. All Steve Perry did was sing amazingly and flawlessly night after night after night. Journey was labeled as "Corporate Rock" and as a "Ballad Band" - and Rolling Stone magazine hated them - so that made people not even give them a chance. Queen and Elvis never endured that kind of hatred and unfair treatment. He is still living, but I imagine, he will be celebrated more when he passes. BTW, when are we going to see a Journey or Steve Perry picture on your wall?!

Very nice. High schoolers would cruise the Ave. in small towns for entertainment, stereo cranking. It's a great experience. When you come back to that old town, it's not small anymore. 💥🎶🎼 What incredible vocal acrobatics!! This is one of my favorite Journey songs. It really evokes all the feels and I get such goosebumps. My take on the meaning is that no matter what, life goes on. Hap, I like your parsing of the lyrics and the way you are tying it back to hip hop and rap is interesting. The song was written by Jonathan Cain, Neal Schon and Steve Perry. They turned out some of the best songs of the 80's!!🎶🎸🎹. Even though the band has gone on and so has Steve Perry, to have great careers, they were at their very best together. I know my musical life is richer for having them in it. To me Steve Perry is the GOAT and the Voice. Peace J ✌ ☮ 💕

No worries and to be honest, for this song no visuals are needed at all. You said the thoughts that I had in my mind. As soon as Steve starts singing, he pictures the song with his beautiful voice and takes you on a Journey 😉. Better than all videos and so you are able to enjoy his beautiful and kind of captivating singing even better. And in addition to this this wonderful guitar interlude 🎸. I like Steve’s solo work too. It’s different and there are some beauties available, but the whole group with Steve as their singer for me too is just the „complete package“ 😊. @randallwong7196

The group's first three albums were built on drums and guitars, with Rolie being the vocalist. Perry wasn't there yet. It's a major difference in voice types. Guitar and drum people are really into these albums. Schon ( guitarist ) was a founding member. Ansley Dunbar was the drummer for these albums, at some point being replaced by Steve Smith, who is on a lot of the Perry albums. Just typical things that happen with bands I suppose. People leave, get fired/replaced, sometimes they come back.....

I think Steve doesn't get as celebrated as other amazing singers like Mercury or Dio because Journey was seen as more "corporate rock".. in other words, rock engineered to make money with hit pop singles. They were seen as more of a pop act. Also Steve is seen as being a bit "schmaltzy"... sentimental, emotional, lacking edge.. which to some rock folks, isnt "cool". All that aside, I think most would agree he has one of the greatest voices of the last 100 years.

So beautifully sung, such an amazing voice on Steve Perry 💙... but IMHO, the reason he may not be so celebrated as Freddie Mercury is for several reasons, the main being Freddie's PASSION when singing, no matter if in a studio or on a stage performance... there's his musical passion others don't exhibit, like SP. Surely SP HAS IT, but he just stands there, while Freddie interacts with his audiences & that makes his singing come alive ! ABSOLUTELY, SP is up there near the top but nobody has the voice nor passion of Freddie. I hate to compare, it's almost wrong, but the world gave Freddie more attention & praise all those years with Queen AND alot, not all, of his beautiful solo work due to his talents & his PASSION as he sings & writhes his body into contortions almost. to bring the sounds up out of his chest. And might I remind all that his applauded operatic collaboration with Monserrate Caballe was epic, truly, for a rock artist to be so praised by the opera community as Freddie was for his Barcelona opera album!! Mind you, they praised his singing,, but also that he wrote most of those opera songs, lyrics AND the music for BOTH his parts AND Montsy's parts for her, an opera diva ( alone & some with his friend Mike Moran), AND... one is written & SUNG by him in Japanese & another one he wrote & sings in Spanish !!!Who does that? Freddie was & is & may ALWAYS be the GOAT 🐐 & now 50 YEARS LATER NO ONE HAS TOPPED HIM. 📝 Note: one cannot help notice Freddie's perfectly chisled jawline, his sensual lips, his fiery eyes, his sculpted Patrician nose, his sexy body, & above all his confidence & passion don't hurt either 😊!!! People who love him & young people who never knew much about him but wanted to,, spread the word about the 2018 movie Bohemian Rhapsody & to date it has made well over a Billion $$. Yes, the inaccuracies of actual timing & events are all mixed up but the music speaks loud & clear that this musical genius stands far above the rest. He's not a Star, he's a LEGEND 😇
