The song is about a traveller who sets out in a space ship and whilst he’s out in space he finds that although only a year has passed for him back on earth there’s a long time passed, hence everyone he knew has grown old, or died. Hence his daughter looks like his wife “your mothers eyes, from your eyes cried at me” and other lyrics

I loved that you watched the two versions in one video! The song is about space travel and relativity. For the travelers the time lapse was one year, but to the earth many years passed. The protagonist who sings the song is sad because he returned still young but the woman he loves had gone, and he see her eyes in his children eyes. One curiosity about this song is that it's name '39 and in fact is the track 39 in Queen discography. Nice reaction.

What a good idea to do studio and live in one reaction! Many Queen songs are so different (live vs. studio), that this would be a wonderful format, also for many other songs. Although the later albums have no live versions anymore, unfortunately. The crazy falsettos are mainly by Roger, although I think Freddie also added to them. Yes, it's like a simple folk song/campfire song on one hand, but there are also the time travel lyrics and these falsettos... It's definitely catchy, there are times when this one keeps rotating in my head for hours. The title means a year '39 in one century and they returned in '39, 100 years later, maybe 2039 to 2139, nobody knows exactly which century. Back then I thought this song was about 1939, but it isn't.

Brian with his astrophysician background wrote this song. A astronaut and his crew who embarked for only one year journey when returned to earth a century later they of course discovered that all the people they loved passed away. Theory of Eiinstein : relativity, light speed. For the lyrics "your mother's eyes from your eyes cried to me :He met his grandchild and recognized his daugter's eyes in him (I guessed) That's a good song in which we can hear Brian may as the vocal leader in the studio version with Roger for the highpitch. Most of the ballads of Queen are Brian's. for the live I agree with you they were able to make on lives a very special moment like a campsite. All the spotligthts would be light off, only a few would stay to give a verty intimate atmosphere. Same thing in Love of my life. Thanks to listen it.

I wrote you a comment on this song once (I was a physics major) time dilation near speed of light - the idea of one year for the astronauts on the trip will in essentially be more like 100 years on Earth, so when they get 'Home' to Earth from a trip to find new lands/planets (like in the 1700's-1800 exploration on the Seas - long trips) when they get back to Earth his wife has passed on (seeing her in his daughter's eyes - and 'the Earth is old and grey' - perhaps too late for 'NEW lands to help the population of the Earth...it's Roger singing the high vocalizations - Freddie called this area of Rogers' voice his dog whistle notes...

I'm so glad you did this because its one of my favorite Queen songs. The backing vocals are done by Roger and Freddie. While the Ah's are Roger. It may be hard to tell sometimes but usually the real high stuff is Roger because he has a naturally high voice and its easy to tell their voices a part once you've heard them talk. Also I was wondering if you would watch Queen funny moments or things like that to really understand each of their personalities off stage.

If you take two identical watches and set a time, then send one into space especially at high speed the watch in space will record less time then the watch on the Earth. I think it was Einstein who came up with that and was later proved with space travel. The idea of the song is that the ship went into space for a year of ships time but many more years passed on earth while they were away, the guy comes home and mistakes his daughter for his wife. The ending is a sad one because all he has loved has now passed and is no more "For my life still ahead pity me"

Then you will see the similarities with this song . And you will "see " (your mother's eyes from your eyes cry to me) those lyrics takes me every time. Brilliant. I assume that Nolan was a big fan of Queen 😉. Just my opinion.

“Write your letters In the sand” means the sands of time. I.e people on earth are writing video messages to the ship about their lives. And They are aging in every message, whilst those getting the messages on the ship are only aging weeks on their year long round trip. What an absolutely head fuck that would be to be on that ship seeing your loved ones age through life and die over a couple of months. And what brilliant opaque lyrics to capture the whole thing in. Brilliant song... and sung better by Brain too!

It’s the story of 39 is about someone who goes away and leaves his family and because of the time dilation effect, when you go away, the people on earth have aged a lot more than he has when he comes home. He’s aged a year and they’ve aged 100 years so, instead of coming back to his wife, he comes back to his daughter and he can see his wife in his daughter.

Thank you for all your reactions. I became an addict of your channel. I'm gonna make a request now : Brian May Too much love will kill you. with lyrics . Brian wrote this song in 1988, reflected the breakdown of Brian's first marriage, with children ages 10, 7 and 1 year old, and attraction to his future wife. Freddie's version is amazing, but no one could ever sing this as perfect as Brian, because it's his story. You can feel that the lyrics are Brian's and the raw emotion really shines through. You can literally feel his hurt. Besides of that, when he sang To Much Love Will Kill You in 1992 he just lost Freddie and his dad. Absolutely heartbreaking.

Interesting that if you watch any of the Queen documentaries the relationship between Freddie and the band was very stained in the late 70's early 80's when the live performance was recorded, you can get a sense of the tension when Brian is almost saying this version of his song is not as good as the studio version and Freddie saying its "All yours" at the very end. You can almost feel the creative tensions between them.

The mustache is looking great, it actually suits you! Another great reaction! This is that one song were I think Brian's voice just works better, it is a folk song. Freddie did tend to over sing and over power the song, sometimes less is more. I do really dislike over singing, because it often changes the meaning or the original message of the song, and this is good example of that. That is one thing I really dislike about singing competitions the over singing and the destruction of songs. People always focus on the famous Roger falsetto here in the studio version, but it was actually Freddie and Roger doing harmonies. This song through the years really tells the story of Roger's falsetto, it sounds amazing in their 1976 performance at Hyde Park, in 1977 at Earls Court it is also pretty good but not as good as 1976, by 1979 you can see that Roger had lost that high falsetto and Freddie took over that part. I think Roger and Freddie treated the song like a fun sing-a-long. While Brian intended for the song to be more poignant, it is actually quite a sad tale. You can see how Brian is almost rolling his eyes at start of the live version, like an older brother who has to watch over two naughty younger brothers. Roger's hew-haw's almost turns it into a country song, and Freddie is singing it like the happiest sing-a-long. But it is generally a fun performance and it is always nice to get Roger away from the drums. They also did this in 1986 where they did a rock 'n roll cover medley that was great fun kzbin.info/www/bejne/r6KUgoamqMmkgsU. This is probably the best song Brian does on his own.

While Queen is above and beyond live, 39 is one of several songs that are better on the album. Live, at the least Roger plays a bass drum. Brian has a really underrated singing voice. Yes, 39 is a space folk ballad about astronauts who go off in search of other planets to colonize. Brian was working on his phd in Astrophysics when the band really took off, so he had to put his degree on hold. He definitely put his science knowledge to good use in this song by blending in Einstein's clock paradox theory. The theory is when you travel at the speed of light, you'd think only a year has gone by, but on earth, probably one or two hundred years have gone by. Basically its a 1970's precursor to the movie Interstellar in less than five minutes, but more accurate. When Brian first wrote 39, he thought the space travel colonization concept sounded cool, but given the sorry state our planet is in, before covid-19 not so much. In the 2014/1015 Queen concert tour with Adam Lambert, Brian would sing '39 and do a little intro storytelling about the scientific aspects, the song's inspiration, and introduce the "members of the space crew (band)" and they take the audience "on a trip" with the song. Brian is also a totally lovable, down to earth, gold-hearted, modern genius renaissance man.
