My daughter has been in a floor bed since she came home from the NICU. We love it. Bonus for us, my husband has CP and walks with crutches so he couldn't lift her in/out of a crib. With the floor bed he's able to be on the floor and care for her without me!

We accepted a really nice crib and dresser from my sister in-law that I actually regret taking. It is a lovely piece of furniture but I'm really short and it became impossible for me to lift my son into the crib and lay him gracefully by the time he was 1. He's now 18 months and we just moved him to a toddler platform bed. I'm so incredibly excited to be able to put him to sleep and change his bedding without a wrestle.

We've had our 1 year old on a floor mattress since he was 6 months, which made life soooo much easier as I could lie with him to nurse and read stories for naps and bed time. When he started crawling things got a bit more complicated, but after a few months we were stunned to see him on the baby monitor (once we moved him into his own room,) climbing off the bed to play in the middle of the night.... -and then back on to fall back asleep on his own!!!! Now in the mornings when he wakes up he comes into our bedroom to get us rather than having to cry from a crib. It's amazing. I still haven't figured out how to put him down without nursing / lying with him until he falls asleep, but after watching this video I'm motivated to try "le pause" :) Thanks!

I did a student placement in a montissori nursery a couple of years ago, the preschoolers couldn’t play in a group but instead had to play on their own or with a partner. No activities could be mixed, stuff like putting blocks in a truck, or a car in a weighing scale. The independence is good sure but it seemed like they werent being independent rather being controlled in other ways.

I heard a similar story from a mom who was questioning montessori schooling. She felt as even though the kids were given options to play with any toys they liked, the toys could only be played with a certain way and the teachers would even correct her son for doing it wrong even though he was creative and technically getting the right result.

I totally see the advantage to babies and toddlers. Where do you read bedtime stories with them? How hard has this been on your back and knees? So glad you covered the possibility that they could fall asleep in an odd position and/or in an odd location. If they can breathe and do not look like they are in an unnatural position, I am all for letting them finish their sleeping.

I'm keen to transition my 14month old into a floor bed. At current he will stand up and cry in the cot (I've only recently come to learn about Montessori) as soon as I leave the room. Also my partner or I will sleep on his floor in his room if he is having a rough night. I've been waiting ALOT of your videos and I think they are great!!! Largely based on this video, we did a floor bed for our toddler. We followed your tips, and mold still grew. We have original wood floors from '69, so it was possibly dormant in the wood. After doing more independent research (Which I wish I would have done prior to the floor bed) it's actually more unsafe to have the bed on the floor. More asthma issues (our son has asthma), more bugs (our son has had reocurring bug bites at night) and mold. So people, look into this stuff MUCH more on your own before just putting a mattress on the floor. I really wish I would have done MUCH more research into the health risks.

Could you explain if you are talking about general floor beds or just mattress directly on floor regarding the asthma aspect? We are renovating a room for little one, so no old carpets, no mattress on the floor but I thought of a low bedframe with slates for airflow. I have been wanting to try to the Montessori method with my 19 month old. We did use a crib till she was starting to climb out of it and I got a Frozen 2 bed that is a floor bed. I thought it was easier than getting a bed that sits higher up. They do make character beds like my daughter's frozen bed that are around $30 to $60. We didn't have a lot of money at the time so that was our best option.

I feel like leaving a baby/toddler to cry for 5-10 minutes is an exorbitant amount of time and surely is a form of the ‘cry it out’ method. You hope eventually that they will learn to stop ‘needing’ you and just go to sleep. The reality is our children do need us, nothing wrong with encouraging independence but at your child’s own pace. If they are standing up crying for you for 5 minutes straight why not go in and give your child some love and support? They are so young and vulnerable but they will grow out of these things. Love your precious children and hold them close and hopefully when they grow older they will want to stay close. Push them towards ‘independence’ and don’t be surprised when they are so independent they are not looking to you for love and guidance.

from 6-11 months my lo would crawl out of bed and sleep on her carpeted floor mostly by the door. we used to pick her up and tell her that the bed is for sleeping. but then it became repetitive every single that we would have to pick her up 3 times to put her back in her bed so we stopped doing that and just let her sleep on the floor. we’d usually wait for 30 mins making sure she’s asleep then we go in, pick her up and put her back to her bed. eventually at 12months old she’d still crawl out of bed but learned to put herself back to bed whenever she’d feel falling asleep. she just naturally grasp the idea of bed.

OMG!! I really need your help please! So glad that you uploaded this video as I’m so confused now! I was inspired by you to implement floor bed to my baby :) I love the whole idea! It was already a bit late when we started at when he was 6months (From sleeping in the same room, a cot bed just next to me). Which mean he can roll over and crawl around when we started, not a perfect time to introduce floor bed. We have our sleeping routine :close the curtain, and sleeping music, sign, say consistent phase, I leave the room. He used to suck dummy to soothe himself when he was a small baby. But now he refuses dummy, he bangs his head on things (floor/ pillow/cushion/ bed/ even people). Unlike what you suggested above, we don’t close the door during day naps, I just walk away and leaves the door open with the pressure gate locked. He sometimes cries for me or plays with himself before falling asleep. The main problem is, he just sleeps on the floor next the the gate / door. And I put a pillow next to the door, otherwise he just bangs his head on the floor until falling asleep. I transfer him back to his bed carefully (sometimes wakes him because of this) after he fell asleep next to the gate (we close the door at night after transferring him to bed). This is the reason why we don’t close the door as he only fall asleep behind the door, if we close it, it’s quite danger to open the door if he needs us or cries for us, just don’t want his fingers tripped between door and floor.... It has been three months, he is almost 9 months now. We are thinking ways to settle this. I thought of moving the floor bed to the door gate when it is his nap time....and just tried today before watching your video... but it seems super troublesome and it doesn’t work at night if we need to close the door. Day time still not too too bed, but at night, he may wake up to find mummy and crawl to the door and cries the house down. And we need to open the door super careful at 3:00am... avoid hurting his fingers...... I really need some advices from you, according to what you say, would you suggest just let my baby sleeps next to the gate as long as it is comfortable? Just afraid that it’s not heathy for baby sleeping on a cushion next to the door in long term... or should I close the door during the day naps as well so? Super helpless and confused and I’ve even thought of giving up floor bed. But when I saw him using his auto my to explore his room, I want to insist a little longer 😭 thanks so much if you are reading this super long comment!

I have the exact same problem with my then 6 months old boy. I had to give up the floor bed after that and put him back into the crib. He is now 9 months and keeps holding on to the side of the crib to stand up every time I put him to bed. As he doesn't know how to lie down from standing up, he can't go back to sleep by himself. This is so hopeless.

Do your kiddos know how to sleep in a pack n play when you travel? Also, for a 13 month old would you suggest starting the transition with naps, then adding in overnight sleep? Hey Ashley! What are the differences or benefits of choosing a floor bed versus a toddler bed for a 15-month-old or for a toddler in general? Toddler is sleeping in a crib right now. If there's too much information to post here, I would love to watch a video on this by you! 😃🙋 We just started incorporating Montessori concepts into our home for our 15-month-old. I'd like to transition he to a floor bed but we have a convertible crib that can be turned into a toddler bed right now. Also is the extra cost worth it? Ideas tips? Thanks!!! I would do the pack and play for safety reasons, because it’s pretty likely that the room will not be baby proofed and safe for exploration should they try to get out of bed. However, if the room is baby proofed at all, then you could consider setting up a small space somewhere on the floor!

I used to take a blanket and pillow off my bed and sleep on the floor frequently, sometimes for weeks at a time, from the age of 4 all the way into my teens. By the time I was a teenager, I was too heavy for the floor to not leave bruises on my hip bones and had to stop because it was no longer comfortable.

I love the montessori independent play principals but I disagree that sleeping independently is a Montesorri independently. My daughter has a floor bed and I nurse and bedshare into toddlerhood. Eventually, when they are developmentally ready, they will sleep on their own. Some babies naturally are more inclined to sleep independently with only gentle prompting (not leaving child to cry alone) but some babies do not do well with this approach and I hope that other moms who have babies with higher sleep needs read this and feel comfortable bedsharing completely or partially in a floor bed while maintaining Montessori principles. I have a 3 month old baby I am intending on introducing to his floor bed for independent sleep somewhat soon, but he shares a room with my 33 month old toddler who is very active before bed. So far in his life, my 3 month old falls asleep fairly easy, sometimes effortlessly on my end. I am currently gradually weaning my toddler from wanting me next to him in order to fall asleep. Just wondering when do you think it's safe for a child to start sleeping on a memory foam bed. We bought a full size for our daughter's room not realizing it was unsafe. I was cosleeping with her in the beginning (she was sleeping on a pack and play firm mattress on top of the memory foam). Now she's learning to roll so I wanted to give her more space but the memory foam is unsafe...and of course we don't want to purchase another mattress. Would putting her into a pack and play now (after 9 months of being free to move) be ok until she can safely sleep on the memory foam? I feel like I am going backwards here by putting her into a playpen to sleep.

But he’s very fascinated by baseboard and try to go closer to the wall. He bumped his head a few times. So is there any product available to provide a cushion or something? Thank you. Is it safe to have the mattress right next to the wall, or is that a suffocation risk? Is it safer to have a floor bed with rails on the side that's next to the wall?

How do you handle getting through the night when you have such a small baby (3-12 months) in a separate room with the door closed. They will have to nurse, what if you don’t hear them or wake up when they need you? Do you use a monitor?

I wish we could do this, but I just can’t get comfortable with it. We live in a ranch style house with a pool in the backyard ~about 10ft from the backdoor. Even though it is fenced, alarmed, and so are the house doors, I like that extra protection at night. I love having a pool~ but dang it’s scary! Hopefully being caged doesn’t negatively affect them

Kylie has a small flashlight and her humidifier has a colored glow to it, so she can see around her room at night. Right now, Mia doesn’t have any sort of night light.

My son would fall asleep by himself first time everytime and now it's all gone wrong 😅😅 we bought a floor bed today as we are having to spend more time in with him and he wants us close which we can't do in a cot

Did your 6inch mattresses arrive rolled up? I’m trying to get a thin mattress but they all are rollable and I wonder how supportive and resilient they are if they can be rolled up. Especially when ideally it’ll grow with your child for probably a decade. Otherwise I’d be going with an 8 inch mattress which they say can’t be rolled up but seems so much taller

Hi! My son is 6 and a half months old. He’s been using a floor bed for a few months now and we’re having some issues. We had to get a rail because he was purposely rolling off the mattress over and over once he realized he could. The rail worked for a little while and now he’s been finding a way to roll off the top of the mattress. This kid can not be stopped! Haha. He doesn’t crawl yet, so my concern is him rolling off the mattress on to his head and injuring himself. Ideas? The pool noodle makes me worry about suffocation.

One thing I've been wondering, and maybe you're amazing community can comment too, is what age would you transition FROM a floor bed to a regular bed for a child. Planning to transition my child to a floor bed, but they can get quite expensive. Is there anything wrong with leaving my child in a floor bed until he goes off to college?

Just look at the Japanese... They traditionally have futons on the floor, perhaps with a tatami(iirc) mat. I personally think floor shooting is easier to do in a carpeted space. It may be worth exploring having a rug with a futon rather than a coiled mattress once the child is past danger of suffocation. Beware, with any form of floor sleeping, you really need to be careful about cleanliness. There are dangers of at least aggravating asthma, mold etc. Anecdotes: I recall enjoying sleeping on just the mattress on the floor as a child post move. I may have actually asked to continue sleeping in such a way. As a bachelor, husband had a good time simply sleeping on some sheet covered comforters. I would have been perfectly happy with this, but we decided to invest in a futon set. (Granted, like most mattresses, they are supposed to be replaced after a certain period of time.) Husband and I slept on the floor until he figured it wasn't the best to make a pregnant lady get up off the floor first thing in the morning. We then put our futon on a short bed frame supported with plywood in addition to the slats, as futons are quite pliable. We have always kept a flat sheet underneath the mattress, amd kept a cleaning routine: wash and aired out bedding, and sweep/mop/vaccum floors every couple of weeks max. We have done this on carpeted and wooden floors, and continue a similar practice on our little platform. Point being, I don't think there is anything inherently wrong with sleeping on the floor. Some may be repulsed by it. Some may find it more comfortable. You just have to figure out the caveats/how to go about them, what your family enjoys/is willing to do, and make the best decision for y'all. Disclaimer: We haven't made it around to experimenting with our own children yet. We currently have hardwood floors, and a very mobile toddler who is an active sleeper with the internet in the nursery. The crib will have to do until we get things blocked off sufficiently. Hope this helps/ provides some perspective.

Some etsy floor beds have railings around most of the bed with one opening. Are these OK? Im concerned about our 8 month old starting to stand using the railing then flipping over? Is this why your beds dont have railings?

I really wish I knew about this before we got a crib. My daughter refuses to sleep in a crib. But it’s exhausting holding her or trying to get her down all night long. I think that this would have been the perfect solution for us. I am just going to get her crib mattress out of her crib and use that for a little while.

My husband and I are expecting our first in June and we're all in on the floor bed idea. We're planning on getting a Sprout Kids frame. We were hoping to get the twin size, but unfortunately, the nursery is such an awkward space that only the crib size will fit. I had no idea there were SO MANY crib mattress choices out there these days. Can anyone make any recommendations, please? 😧

We have the Naturepedic Organic 150-Coil 2-Stage Mattress. Its pricey but our rational was that the baby spends sooo much time sleeping on it that a good organoc mattress was worth every penny. Good luck and congratulations!!

Interesting. I had my own mattress on the floor with my 1st. It led to croup, so with number 3 the lowest bedframe I can get in queen size. My babies have all slept in my bed or in my room. The things I have been able to attend to by instinctively waking up, coughing fits, sleepy vomits, makes me absolutely terrified of babies sleeping in their own room. Just wanted to put it out there that you can bed share on a floor bed. Our babies are mammals. I'm on board with everything else Montessori I've learned on your channel. But babies sleeping in their own room is a SIDs risk. Most midwives and MCHnurses are reluctant to change their in built beliefs about bed sharing and room sharing. But if you look properly in the details for safe sleeping now, you'll find all the recommendations have been changed. Mammal babies do not need to be independent sleepers. And of ours taken further to cry it out, "sleep training" out puts baby into a trauma response. They stop crying eventually because their nervous system is in freeze mode. Fight, flight and freeze. This was explained to me by 2 different trauma specialists.

We did the same thing, as soon as our oldest could crawl we would place our matras on the floor. By the time she New how to climb of a little step, we would use a litte step next to our normal bed and she would climb out of bed using the step. I would do the same thing with our youngest. Our oldest is never been sleep trained, and knows how to fall asleep on her own, it is a matter of trust and knowing that mommy and daddy are there and that they are safe

Hi 💛 love your videos. Inspired me to put my boy in a floor bed at 3 months. It started off great. When he started moving he’d get up and play with his toys happily. But now, nearly every wake time he cries and sits by the door to come out. Night or day. Sometimes I think it’s because he’s been quietly awake and then gets upset no one found him already.. At night he’s still breastfeed and wakes sometimes 5 times. And sits by the door and cries. Do you have any advice for this? He can self-soothe, sometimes I know he’s woken by falls back to sleep. Thank you for the info! I love the idea of a floor bed and may transition our daughter there soon. However, I’m worried about the transition to having her sleep on her own, as she’s always slept in our room and always nurses to sleep. She’s currently 7 months. Do you have any tips on how to get her to fall asleep independently when she only knows being nursed to sleep? And one more question... if you use black out curtains, how can your children get out of bed to play? How’s the darkness not hazardous to them moving around? Thank you again for the great content!

Hi Courtney, I have a 11 month old who’s been in a floor bed since he was 3 months. I don’t have completely black out curtains but they are close. I have found my boy seems to have amazing eye sight in darkness.. he can see much better than I, he still points to things or happily plays with his toys. Amazes me still at times. And if you know the room is safe then that keeps my mind at ease too

Ardnas N. Thanks for asking that. I also wondered: is it just a US thing? In my country the children’s furniture stores only have foam and Latex mattresses, and only 4 inch (10 cm) ones at that.
