I live by the rule that there is no book too hard for a child. I HATE when parents won't let their kid have a book because it's "too hard." They make perfect read alouds and help develop their vocabulary. 💖

I 100% agree! Some folks just get hung up on the “right” reading level, which is why I addressed it.

We love books! No budget for books. 😆 At one point I had over 100 board books. We’ve downsized because we’re moving. I grew up with a library in my house, so books are very important to me.

Our daughter goes to casa and while i can see/understand some of the reasons for not encouraging imaginary play in class, at home we let her follow her own learning. We have good mixture of books, from ones like these, to classic stories and new story books. Since the day she came home (4-5 days old) I've read to her every day, some times up to 10 books a day (sometimes the same book multiple times a day) at almost 3 she has the vocabulary of other children twice her age, and already recognizes many words...i'm sure she'll be fine.

We do the same in this house. And my daughter has benefited in the same way. :) As I mentioned, I only shared our favorite nonfiction/reality-based books in the interest of the book suggestions remaining in line with Montessori ideals. 👍🏻😊

❤Thank you very much for making this video! 😊 This was such an excellent collection of recommendations! :-) I’m a grandmother always looking for gift ideas, but couldn’t possibly keep this to myself so I shared it with both my daughters who both have toddlers and one has a school-age child . I can’t wait to check these out, of the library for my long-distance grandmothering! 😊❤

This is amazing resource on all the books that you shared in this video. You are great inspiration and making it interesting to us to follow Montessori method for our child..wishing more great success in raising your two child...One of the book name One rainy day for counting numbers mentioned that they have counting till 11 and not to 10. I saw closely and realized that author is Indian. Indian greatly belives in odd numbers for doing anything auspicious..so there is a reason to count till 11 and not to 10..on another note your videos are awesome and i have been following as a parent to follow Montessori ways to raise my daughter..waiting for another interesting video from happa family😀😀😀😀

WOW the fact that u have a 5-month-old baby and you can be nursing her while filming a video shows how different all babies are! Our daughter would never be able to do that. When she nurses she's all over the place, flapping her arms around, biting me, pulling my nipple, scratching my chest, demanding my attention and eye contact, pulling away, then coming back again. Basically impossible for me to ever focus on anything else. :D

👋 Career Nanny for 10+ years here 🙋‍♀️Here We Are is SO BEAUTIFUL and Big Girl Panties is fun. Love Leslie Patrecelli books; the Potty book is very helpful to have next to the toilet to read while they wait for the pee or poo to come (every kid loves saying “Tinkle tinkle TOOT!” 😂) and also Yummy Yucky has been very helpful to learn what goes in the mouth and what doesn’t. The LoveEvery books are all just real photographs with no words, mostly of babies showing different emotions, body parts, animals, etc… Some great inclusionary books are Hats of Faith by Medeia Cohan, Say Hello by Rachel Isadora (learn to say hi in multiple languages), Bodies Are Cool by Tyler Feder, Julián Is a Mermaid by Jessica Love and All Are Welcome by Alexandra Penfold & Suzanne Kaufman. Don’t Hug Doug is also a fantastic book to teach about consent, body autonomy and setting boundaries. And finally, I Like Myself by Karen Beaumont is a beautiful book with positive affirmations. The illustrations aren’t STRICTLY realistic, but it’s such a wonderful book and I like to teach toddlers to recite some of the affirmations back to me as they go down for nap time. Oh, and Zoo Ology by Joelle Joliet is a very large book of animal illustrations that I swear has every single animal in it (I actually learned a lot from that one myself lol) Hope this helps!

Another series I love is the Indestructibles series one reason is because my little one loves to get her hands on books and these WILL NOT RIP! Or get broken down like some of the board books! She loves them, they are not too long and have great realistic colors for whatever the book is talking about! You will not only see the animal but you will see it in its’ natural environment doing what that animal typically does, as well as there are a lot of different topics! Each book is amazing and educational! Your baby will love it, plus ones he or she gets older they can start pointing things out! Great video and thanks for more books, I don’t believe you can ever have too many! I look forward to the next video:)

Oh, another question! What’s your process at the library? :) I imagine that Kylie might reach out for an unrealistic book, do you go through them at the library? And will you say no to some? I imagine this isn’t unique to your preferences in books, I for example would have a hard time checking out a very gender stereotypical book. But I was curious what your behaviour/language is if she’s drawn to a book you’re not a fan of?

Hey Ashley, thank you so much for your time and resources. I was wondering if you have time and feel comfortable sharing, could you do a book update on the girls current favorites or your whats on your reading wish list? I'm a preschool teacher and a mom so this is truly appreciated and valued. Also, so that I don't have to comment under another video, I would like to request a video on birthday presents for the girls this year. I get so inspired by those because my daughter and son are just months younger than the girls so its really fun to see what you plan on getting them.

Thank you for such a great video! I wonder how to do it best way - changing children books? I mean: I have bought some new books. Shall I give all of them to the child at once and take away all old books? and make a rotation once a week, for example? Or it will better to give him only one new book taking away one old one and so forth? when you come back home from the library you give a daughter all new books at once and leave several her favourite ones also?

Hi Ashley, I was wondering your opinion on when to remove books from your child’s shelf that seem a bit too young for them. We have quite a few of the lift and flat books still on my sons shelf but they are definitely too easy. I have no problem leaving them on the shelf because he enjoys them, and I know that it is great to repeat read books for children. I was just wondering if you had an opinion on this? Maybe you thought that I should only remove them if he no longer shows interest in them? I would love to hear your thoughts on this. Thanks so much for your time. As always, I truly enjoy your videos and look forward to any time you upload a new one.

I really really appreciated this video, thanks :) I’m interested in learning more about the montessori thoughts on realism. I have a wonderful mother in law who is very imaginative and gives stuffed animals and food voices and ”unrealistic” stories, and I was hoping to better understand the effect that the montessori approach to realism hopes to have on the kids. Do you have any recommended video/reading on it?

I wanted to get rid of those books that aren't Montessori but am not sure what I should be looking for in the books to be able to tell if I should keep them or not. Does anyone know? 🤔

In a strict Montessori environment you want to use realistic books ie books that are either non fiction or have realistic stories (eg every day stuff that happens to your child). Illustrations should be either realistic, life-like drawings or photographs. Things like peppa pig where you have a walking, talking and dressed pig would be considered non montessori. I believe Ashley has made another video where they talk about why montessori tries to avoid non realistic materials in small children. Obviously in your own home you can use whatever criteria you want to use to pick books :)

Just curious because I saw your Gator sweats and got all excited (I’m a Gator too, lol, c/o 2009). I have a 19 month old and due for baby #2 when my daughter is 2 years old, similar to the age difference between Kylie and Mia, so it’s extra nice watching your videos because it’s a bit like getting a glimpse into our future so we can have an idea what it might be like. :-). I always keep out any books that she shows interest in. But we rotate all others every 2-3 weeks with our library trips. And 10 - 12 books at a time is a good number for a 2 year old.
