I purchased a used vehicle and had a nail in a tire. I took it to discount tire, and they found an old repair in another location of the tire with a plug. They removed the plug and told me it was not repairable and priced a new tire. I put the spare on and took the vehicle to Goodyear. They repaired both leakes in the tires, and I continued to use those tires for 20,000 miles with no issues. Discount is a good company, but I feel they are over cautious.

We were on a 1 month midwestern trip. SD, wy, Ks, and OK we had 5 flat tires in a 4 week period. Just road junk on a couple. Then blow out on truck and a blow out on the camper! Discount tire took care of us with some new truck tires! I have become a pro at changing camper tires!

8:20 Discount tire, San Antonio TX. My RV needed all 5 new tires. We couldn't pull into their parking area. I went down the road to an open parking lot. They brought all the tires and equipment to me to replace the tires. Spot on customer support.

While in San Antonio at the disount on 281 they hold me to pull into the home depot parking lot and they came to the travel trailer and replaced all four tires on the travel trailer and rolled them across the parking to their shop. They also pulled Goodyears Endurance for it when i only has the budget for Carlisle tires but since the mounted them before I realized they just let me pay the Carsile price it saved me like $200! I 100% buy the discount tire warranty ive had tires slashed in a parking lot on Thanksgiving back in 2011 and they were only a month old. Discount’s warrant replaced all four tires for free during black friday.

So a couple things: 1) When planning to pick someone up at the airport, most airlines give you the ability to track flights. This is very helpful with the fluid schedules the airlines keep. 2) Plugs. I've plugged tires for many, many years. I have even plugged tire for customers when I was a younger lad. Reaming the hole in the tire is to create a uniform area for the plug to call home. Today, the tire industry has tabooed that, I think mostly to drive up after sales (either via a road hazard warranty or a patch install sale). More work=more cost. By the way, I would have kept that plugged tire (trimming the tails from the tread) and not thought twice. If you were concerned, rotate it to the rear as a test for proof of usability. But hey, that's me. Thanks for sharing!

Agreed, I'd have tossed it on a rear. I'm a cheap guy though.. I do buy roadhazard though, definitely worth it on the big dollar tires. Or hauling everything you own..

I've had Discount plug tires and send me on the way. They've never leaked. As long as it's not in the sidewall it's pluggable.

That’s very interesting. I’ve actually never heard that a plug is a temporary fix, and I’ve had many tires plugged throughout my life. The only thing I’ve been told is that tires with holes near the wall, at the edge of the tread, can’t be plugged.

Owned a Tire shop for 20 years. The plug does not seal the hole well and lets moisture into the steel belt causing corrosion. It needs to be patched from the inside and the hole from the bolt needs to be filled also so moisture is sealed out from the outside. We had patches that had a rubber stem attached to the patch. You pull the stem through the hole and stich the patch down. Cut off the excess rubber stem. You are correct about holes near the shoulder or sidewall, they can't be fixed.

I accidently stumbled on one of you videos and watched it, thinking "he's a bit weird". Also, thinking "it's a good thing, I DON'T need to subscribe to any more YT channels. But then I watched this one, remembering my two lost tires. One, near Tucson, I noticed the pressure dropping (thankfully, I bought a TPMS right after I bought a 20 year old Tioga) Assured by the seller that he put tires on "last summer". No, he didn't say whether new or used. One front tire had a ten year old date code. I was right at an exit that happened to have a tire shop. They put the spare on for me. That got me about 20 miles from Las Cruces when the right inside dually blew. Told by the guy who came out that they only had Cooper tires to fit my rig. By then, I was leary of the spare so I had him bring two tires. While he was changing them, a semi went by, blowing a tire just as it cleared my bumper. I started laughing, thinking I am running with the big dogs now, blowing tires on the interstate. The guy changing my tire was worried that it had scared me. Nope, not much scares me --if you knew my kids, they spent years trying to sneak up on me. Made it to San Antonio, Discount Tire and gor 4 more tires. By the way, I am a 76 year old Nana, now on my third cross country trip from Maine to Quartzsite for the winter. And yes, I subbed.😄

The DEF port on our Sprinter van is at the front of the engine next to the radiator. Even there it's a pita to lift a jug and pour it in. After a couple iterations of that mess, we now go to the truck island and get exactly what we need. No mess, no fuss AND it is significantly less expensive than those jugs. Plus no trash.

Tip...venting 101. Turn your container(for any pour) so the opening is on the top. Allows venting and even flow. Plus, in your situation, it appears it would better fit in your work area. Of course, you'll still need to turn it as the fluid level lowers.

I always take my tires to a tire shop and get a patch put on the inside. It will last the life of the tire. Dexter could have told you that if you listened lol

Hey from NC guys! Dude, I don't know where to begin...ok, I just retired from a 22 year (clue) career with a major USA tire and rubber company. I hope you feel really clean because DT just gave you a bath. As an associate company to my previous employer, I just bought a full set of BFG/ATs for $500 from Sam's Club. Mine are 17" your rims look to be a size or 2 larger, it's difficult to tell. The type of plug was kinda discontinued since I started to work for the giant N. American Corporation. I was an electrician, once upon a time. I had a C30 dually and I was forever picking up all sorts of nice nails, screws and a screw driver once....a piece of an engine block once, dead center of the tread. Made a 3" gaping hole. The screws and nails, I used those plugs that you used without a single incident afterwards. My tires often looked like fringe with all the plugs. That truck was HE-AVY with a Knapheid tool bed and large spools of service wire and such. I traveled Interstate Highways and country roads and pig paths. I personally never had a problem with the plugs you used. However, that type of plug can void your warranty with some tire manufacturers, road hazard warranty or not. The modern method of plugging a tire requires removal of the tire from the rim. A mushroom looking plug with a thin stem or resembles an engine valve. Anyway, the inside surface is scuffed, almost the entire surface of the plug and the inside of the tire are coated with adhesive and the stem fills the hole from the inside. Oh yeah, they use the same tool you did to smooth the inside of the hole, that kinda round rasp looking thing. That "steer tire" load of B S he told you, you do know you could have moved it to the rear, if that makes him feel better. Think about it. The only time "steer tire" comes into play is commercial tractor trailer, true to the name, designated, steer tires. You don't want to have a blowout on a rear tire or a front tire with that truck pulling that RV. Your "friend" there is gonna have that tire patched and resell it, I almost guarantee it. See, those tires have cords and steel belts, for some it's called steel webbing or wires on the core, or green tire, before it's wrapped in rubber and put in a mold. Hey, if you don't know, you don't know. I'm not trying to beat you up or make fun in any way. I went to DT once, because buy 3 tires, get the 4th one free would be a pretty good deal, but that's not what you get. They take the cost of that "free" 4th tire, divide it by 3 and add it to the top of the cost on the 3. I called him out on it and got kicked out. They asked me to leave the premises. I would be interested to see what the tread height difference is between that new tire and the other 3. I'm such a fan of you guys and I just hate to see yall get taken advantage of. The plug is a good "temporary" fix to get you to a tire store for repair but... If you have another year of tread have the tire booted from the inside. This is an approved and safe repair. The same goes for the 5th wheel tires. Second, the Tire Pressure Monitor is great and we have saved tires on our RV because of it... However... we had a truck tire lose air quickly in a parking lot due to a broken stem. The TPM was installed for about 3 years and realized that the "RUBBER" factory stem cracked at the wheel because of the extra weight added to the stem. Make sure that ALL your tire rims have the steel stems when using the TPM sensors. This will save you from experiencing the same as we did...we were lucky.

Next time ask for a radial patch. It will save you from buying a new tire when there is a lot of life left. Also get a matching wheel and spare tire. That way you can keep the look while the flat is being fixed correctly.

Have had nothing but great experience and service with Discount Tire. Last trip we made (14 day road trip) we had a blow out on a new (factory) tire 2 hours into our trip. The spare had previously been plugged and patched by a discount tire; however 6 months after that repair it was bulging in the center of the treads. We called ahead to a discount tire 4 hours down the road and they had 6 tires that we wanted and happened to have the exact wheel we needed to fit the trailer. DT said that the spare tire that was bulging and recommended to replace it. So for peace of mind we picked up 6 GY Endurance tires and had no further issues on the trip. I've plugged tires before and they've been fine. There's a big difference lugging around 16,000 lbs on a tire plug, and won't hesitate to have good tires and peace of mind.

Discount Tire is awesome! The road hazard warrantee is priceless (well $30-40 per tire). In most cases they will just replace the tire and you pay for a new road hazard. We have all of our tires with them and the warrantee.

Our first summer trip, two blow outs then found out that the spare had fix a flat on a brand new fifth wheel. Being newbies we had no idea to upgrade to the next level tire. We limped to the nearest tire store and had all tires upgraded..Hard lesson learned.. we did have a some damage however hydraulics were fine. As a former Ford Dealership Mechanic, I have repaired hundreds of tires, the best is a Plug patch, that is installed from the inside, its a patch that is vulcanized to the inside of the tire but has a plug that fills the hole as well. However plugs like you installed are fine, the biggest problem with them is they dry out and will eventually start to leak, the potential for catastrophic failure (blow out) is extremely unlikely, and would more likely occur from a different type of failure, But there is no harm in playing it safe. We have had our share of tire problems while on the road, mostly the trailer tires, between valve stem leaks from TPMS Sensors (always have all metal stems installed regardless of TPMS manufacturer saying the rubber ones are ok) to Side wall bulges on our Goodyears, to even the same issue you had picking up a bolt in a front tire, Regular careful inspections so far have averted catastrophic failures, but with as many miles as we put on, like you, the odds are not in our favor.

Never had any issues with plugged tires. I did learn that tires on an rv that are 4 to 5 years old with only 500 miles on them can blow out. Had 2 blow back in May. And they all looked brand new including the spare. All replaced. You'd think the tire industry would be producing better tires by now. Love your channel!

I dropped a transmission outside Amarillo Texas on a Sunday afternoon. We have AAA for Motorhome. We called AAA and a semi wrecker picked us up within an hour. On Monday morning I called Jasper Engines and Transmissions in Jasper Indiana. They had the transmission In Nebraska. Is was there on Tuesday morning first thing. The new transmission was in by end of day on Tuesday. Back on the road that night heading to Albuquerque. Jasper Engines is a great company.

Quick tip in a pinch when plugging the hole remember to cut off the excess plug and add kitty litter when the glue is still wet. This will give you traction and keep the glue from heating up thus pulling the plug from the hot asphalt. Dexter will supply the litter lol.

I exclusively use Discount Tires and I have for many years. I always get the warranty, and it has come in handy many times. My DEF filler tube in next to my Diesel filler, on my Dodge. Plus, when I need DEF I fill up at Love’s Truck Stop because you fill the DEF from the same pump as Diesel. No more funnels and heavy DEF jugs for me. Welcome back Ney Ney!

love your videos. I have plugged and patched LOTS of tires over the years and never had an issue while I ran them. (Just run a plug on the back axle) Keep in mind, the guy telling you not to plug/patch a tire is the same guy wanting/needing to sell you a tire.

Speaking from 8years of service repair and service management, With limited slip differentials, if you have 2 tires that are at different wear, it can cause damage to your clutches inside the axle. The old tire should have been repaired with a patch plug and used for the remainderof its tread life. A Goodyear store would have repaired and probably not charged anything.

A tire place could have patched that correctly (if the tire was worth saving) but you are right in that the roadside plug kits are temporary. Tire place will remove the tire and patch it from the inside out and that spot will be better than the rest of the tire. Also I'm of the mindset that any tow or offroad vehicle needs to have an onboard air compressor so glad to see you at least had a portable setup. I've seen people broken down that patched a tire but had no way of filling it back up. Glad you got through it safely and in one piece!

There are alot of Nation wide places to get tires from and get warranties from and that includes a lifetime Rotate & Balance which is good to have too. Tire companies recommend Rotating your tires every 6000 miles to help prolong the life you your tires. The place I worked at used a plug /patch combo which was a solid rubber plug with a patch attached and the glue used would valcanize the plug to the tire.

We had 2 flats in one day. One on travel trailer and one on truck in Georgia. We were on our way to Florida from Indiana. It was a Saturday night. We drove the rest of way to Florida with no spare tires left. I prayed all the way there!

Out here in Northern California we've finally learned to just go to America Tire Store (Discount Tires). Good prices and excellent service. No reason to shop around. PLUS, they'll fix ALL flats for free. And if you need a temporary tire they have good, used tires that'll suffice for a little while and inexpensively.

Hallo Hanks family, had a flat tire a few years ago in the alps. Right on the border of Italy 🇮🇹 and Austria 🇦🇹. On a Sunday. That means here Europe no shop is open. We were nearly half a mile away from the border on the italian side so the road assistance decided that an italian tow truck has to pick us up. (no spare tire in the car, I hate it. If there were a spare tire I had fixed the problem in 15 minutes by myself) So we waited nearly two hours for the tow truck, went back to the direction we came from (one hour drive with the truck) but luckily the repair shop where the truck came from had a tire with the right size in stock, not the same brand but the right size. And they sold it to us at a fair price. 👍 So 4 hours later we could continue our drive home to Germany 🇩🇪. Did I mentioned I hate it that these modern cars have no spare tires. At least here in Germany. I know in other countries you can at least order a spare tire as an option. Cheers

One emergency we have experienced: jacks would NOT retract and we had to get out of our space and on the road! There is a manual override entailing a drill and skills we do not possess. Luckily we were able to call for a mobile RV mechanic to get the jacks retracted. Of course, this meant we didn’t use the jacks again until after they were repaired. Once we returned home, this required an appointment and repairs.

Having worked in tire shops in my teens.....yes a plug is temporary, but then take it to a shop and have it patched. Once patched the tire is considered "like new".

I posted about plugging tires only without patching the inside, and running a plugged tire on steer axle in the ‘flat tire’ video. Please heed the advise. Remember you are towing a 5th wheel, putting extra stresses on the tire. It might let you down when you really need it. Keep us all safe on the road. Have a good week. Rick

In Chico, CA, there’s a Les Schwab and a Discount Tires within a half mile of each other. I’ve always used Costco and run GoodYear all terrains to pull my TT. So much cheaper than either of the other two stores.

When you use a big jug like your DEF (or oil container for that matter) use it with the pour spout at the top and then it won't gurgle out. It allows air to get in the jug when your pouring so the pour stays steady. LOVE your videos and adventures!

I'm so glad you guys are back together again and DeX man is doing ok. Glad you got the tire replaced and they didn't say you had to buy 4 tires. I had to buy 4 tires when I had a flat because they wouldn't fix the tire and it only had about a thousand miles on it. Boy did I get ripped off. It is a 2018 Silverado 2500HD. Oh, driving a short distance on a plugged tire is acceptable. But a few cautions need to be observed. 1)run the air pressure a bit low..(5lbs )and 2) NEVER! Run the plugged tire as a steering tire. Move it to the rear of the vehicle. That way if it blows, you'll still have better control of the vehicle (rig)to get it stopped without damage.

For vehicles for 20 years I've used Discount Tire. Always get the free rotation and love the drive up tire pressure check. For the Class A its Southern Tire.

Lived in a 34 ft class A for four years. Replaced the tires after blowing the left drivers side tire. Unfortunately, got a good deal on tires from an independent dealer and the new tires were all defective. They all failed, one by one. It is exciting to blow the tires directly under the driver at 70 mph, hope no one else has the experience. After that blowout, we were stuck on the left side of the freeway in 110 degree for 7 hours. I learned to change for the spare and just did it myself after that. Once blew an inner, then blew the spare and limped in on 5 wheels. Buy good tires and keep them at the right pressure.

Plugging tires used to be ok. However, now adays it's not good to use as a permanent fix. The reason being is most of todays tires are 1)radials and 2)are steel belted. And rhe act of rasping the hole out(enlarging) brakes the steel belting causing tread seperation and eventual tire decinigration. That didn't happen with old style nylon belts and bious ply tires. I know how bad it is to have the DEF fill neck under the hood. If you’ll take your pocket knife and cut a cross/slit in the back side of the handle to act as a vent it won’t slosh everywhere whenever you fill the tank. Hope this helps……I absolutely love your videos!!!

I have been using Discount Tire before you two were born lol. I love them (& ur channel) because I get free air, fixed leaks, annual balancing n rotations. $80 warranty is better than $100-400/ tire. Happened to me twice (BMW 650i) before I opted for wty. My last $400 tire was only $80! Get some DT! Kids. Geez.

Thanks Hanks!! We had a flat on a Sunday boon docking just outside capitol reef this summer. No tire shops open and we were leaving next day. My family and Hubs and fam always grew up plugging tires for better or worse I guess. We went to tire shops that week when we got in town and out of 4 only one would repair with the plug. Lesson learned. Better off I guess if we put the spare on and just hoped we got to the location. If not then we could have plugged it. We totally get what they are saying like what I learned below from one of the other viewers about the air getting in etc and from the tire shop. So just because plugging is old school I get it may not be better. Lots of CDL drivers including hubs that all work on their own trucks so lots of opinions. But after our bad luck with our newest GMC "Big Blue" and tiers she's getting all new shoes. Ran over a piece of metal on road when she was only couple months old, ugh! but dealer gave us a free tire warranty and it was great! Happened to be going past a chevy dealer, whipped it in and sales lady heard it and said quick to the service dept, they grabbed it and in 15 mins had our spare on and wouldn't charge us! We did get the new tire under the warranty from them. This summer had a screw in the tire (above story) then Friday on travel day our drivers rear tire blew on California 86! had enough room to get over to the left shoulder,, asses the damage, and change tire. Tore up the wheel well, most of the coverings, markers lights, trim- gone. Nice size dent and scuffing on bed. Luckily camper Just has some scuffs on front and underbelly has some nicks but all good. Tire was blown to shreds. Not much left. But thank god it was a rear tire, hubs didn't panic, just got over pretty quick to left lane then left shoulder. We went to discount tire today after a bit of research. Going to probably go back tomorrow or next day once we decide which tires we want. More aggressive than what we had but probably not quite as aggressive as yours. We like boon docking but not going to crazy of places with the solitude! and love national park dirt roads but she's to heavy to bounce us down some of these crazy ones. Loved canyon lands road down into the canyon though! I highly recommend it!!! AWESOME!!!! Denis from discount tire took us all around the truck and showed and explained everything he was doing with his fancy meter! it was cool. He also pointed out the bubble we now have forming. So need new tires for sure now. Well, that was long winded wasn't it! LOL! SORRY! To much caffeine today possibly!? LOL THANKS HANKS!!! Hope to see you on the road some day. Safe travels!

oh and weirdly enough there was another gmc (with a utility body, no camper) about 5 -10 miles down the road that we passed after our blow out Friday with the same exact rear tire totally blown and shredded sitting on the rim just like we were! That was crazy.

Just a tip as a master mechanic. Don’t swap one tire ever especially when the tires have over a few 1000 miles on it. You want to always replace tires on each axle. Ex: you should have changed both front tire. Just my recommendation you want all tires to wear evenly and eventually wear out at the same time. Ideally Love you guys!

Ya know, most truck stops sell DEF at the pump. Separate hose to fill your DEF tank. No spilling. It’s usually cheaper than the bottles too!

Double blowout on our travel trailer on our way to a 3 day concert. We were in central Washington on I90. We were at least 30 miles from nearest tire shop. Only had one spare. Had AAA with RV coverage. Les Schwab came out and changed both tires on the side of the freeway. Took less than 2 hrs from call to AAA to back on the road.

Watching this I’m so glad gm got smart and moved the def fill next to the diesel fill. Another thing that’s a lot easier is just use the def pumps at the truck stops, just got to be careful because they don’t always shut off automatically.

Hello you two loving your videos love you personalities.. so yes couple of months ago.. we live in Arizona heading to Rocky Point MX. Got to Lukeville border and we figured we'll fuel up the diesel. My husband says he looked at the tires but I don't know how well he looked at them I think his pre-tripping skills or post trip skills are lacking. So I finished pumping the diesel because he had to go to the restroom and as I pulled it around and got out I looked down the side of the trailer and I see the one tire bubbled out more than usual. So I walk over to it and I said, oh this must be some big rocks under here to make it bulge out like that. 😆 So I moved the truck up another two feet and that bubble is still there and I said, oh sh**. So needless to say we decided to change out the tire right there at that location having all the space in the world and not taking a chance and driving through Mexico and having it blow on the side of the road which has usually no room to pull over because of the way their roads are. Oh did I mention that I'm a school bus driver and I currently do pre-trips and post trips and I'm always looking at the tires or for leaks 😂 I haven't let my husband down easy yet on that one. Where was your spare tire? Where is your spicket for the DEF bottle? ALWAYS CARRY A SPARE TIRE - 1 tire for the truck, 1 tire for the trailer. Always check those spares to make sure they have air and are not rotten. COSTCO membership is one of the best ideas for RVER's. Their tire policy is great. They automatically give you a prorated price if your tire has a flat, nail, based on the tread. They do free tire rotations and also swap out regular tires for snow tires, free. We were traveling this summer across Iowa, through the hills of Dubuque on our way to Wisconsin. Situation 1, the rear drivers tire on our truck blew, ON THE FREEWAY. 2 lanes. From this experience, I will put an orange safety vest in my truck for times like this. I had to wave traffic to the other lane so they did not hit my husband changing the tire. Option 2 would have been to call a trooper or the police and ask them to direct traffic away from us. We ALWAYS carry a spare and can change our own tires. We rolled into the campground and as my husband was backing the toy hauler into our spot, I heard this loud grinding noise. (This is our example of how wonderful other campers are to one another) A camper immediately saw us checking our rear tire on the trailer and came over to ask if he could help. We had had enough for the day because of the blown tire. He had an impact wrench with him and said to come grab it when we needed it. (We forgot ours) Next morning, my husband took the rear tire off the trailer and the WHOLE brake assembly disintegrated onto the ground. Amazing camper number 2 came over in the morning and said he lived close by and the best place to replace the brake assembly was a great trailer company about 20 miles away. Two hours later my husband had the brake fixed and we were on the road. WHEW! We had to order a new tire from Costco in Greenbay and have it shipped to the store closest to us. Then we had to buy a new rim as the old one got bent. We were able to find a salvage car parts company 5 miles from the Costco to install the new tire onto. We are both farm kids, so we have lots of experience with large implements, so we have those to our credit. I am sure you have learned so much over the years, but it never hurts to continue to ask questions. We are always learning. LOVE your videos! God Bless.

Here's something for you to consider should you find yourself in a similar tire situation again. if you have a tire issue on the steering axle and need to do a roadside repair, you may want to switch your repaired front tire with the rear axel tire till you can get to a tire shop for a permanent repair. this will be fine if the tires are the same size and better to have a blow out on the rear than the front axel. thanks for taking us along on your adventures. I ran a 'plugged' tire for ~40k miles w/o issue. I did keep a vigilant eye on it though. IMHO the odds of an immediate blowout is far, far less than just a slow leak. I just rotate it to the rear and leave it. Living fairly close to Les Schwab hometown I've used them with great success. Discount tire did me a real solid just after COVID hit. We were making our way back from AZ to OR. My lug-nut socket wouldn't fit inside the narrow walls of the aluminum RV tt wheel to loosen the nut. They changed it for me free of charge. I now own a thin wall impact socket that fits as well.

The patch might work better if you use a cordless drill with a sharp bit that is big enough to drill out the tear. If there are any sharp corners of the original damage left it gives a new tear a starting place to propagate from.

On our way to the Grand Canyon, we stopped in Flagstaff for fuel. Doing my walkaround I noticed a trailer tire looked odd. A little low, something foreign in the treads. We pulled into one of the truck lanes and put the spare on. We didn't really think that it was our only spare tire. Continued on like crazy people. 78 miles later we had a blowout of the spare. We were on the Navajo reservation, and nothing was around except a jewelry stand. Also: it was 105 F outside. We called our insurance people, Good Sam. It was going to be quite a while till they could get out. Fortunately, we found out we were only 15 miles from Tuba City, AZ. We found a tire shop, had them fix the original tire to make it a spare and bought another new one for the trailer. Only took us 4 hours to change the tire. Guess we should have bought one in Flagstaff and not chanced driving without a spare! We enjoyed the Canyon and decided to buy ALL new tires once home in Phoenix. Yea, discount tire was the one that sold dameged Chinese tire stems. Left me stranded in the mountains and a damaged tire. They offered to sell me a new tire. I don't do business with them ever.

Hi! We've got a 2019 Denali with the same DEF location. It's not fun. 😄 My husband bought a battery operated pump at Harbor Freight for around $10. It was a Game Changer! No mess and it's fast!
