This is probably your most valuable video so far. Gratitude is literally the vaccine to prevent and the cure to depression, and I mean it in the most literal of ways. By theory as someone who studied psychology at university, and by hard, consistent real life practice. Thanks for bringing this message to so many people. However, gratitude is just half of the story. The other half is progress, and the process. In life like in videogames, you don't get the happiness (or the fun, or the satisfaction, whatever you wanna call it) when you complete it, when you conquer your goals. The fun is in the process of progressing through it. If you set yourself the right goals and you work towards them every day, the knowledge that you're on the right track will save you from existencial agony, anxiety, depression and despair. Then you will have the greatest thing to br grateful for, which is yourself, your vision, your determination and your work

1. Proud of recent efforts 2. Gratitude 3. Excited for something coming up A happy state of mind, satisfaction and motivation are fickle and can come and go anytime and can't be something you base your life and choices on. Enlightenment comes when you have no desires and are happy and grateful for life itself. But if you want to sacrifice some happiness for some desires and think it's worth it, go for it, since happiness is not the goal anyways.

To add to your points in this video, people often think of this broad term "happiness" in the wrong way, at least from what I can see. It is viewed as something that comes as a result of success in life. This is completely backwards. Happiness (positivity and gratitude and such) will drive your success in life. This is also why so many ultra rich and successful people are actually depressed and unfulfilled. They expect the happiness to come after getting that dream job or becoming a millionaire. Thank you for this video it was a great watch. I have been spending a lot more time in meditation and thought lately thanks to your content. It is really interesting and I feel like it is going to do me a lot of good in both the short and long term. :)

I agree that people who aren’t on self improvement are happier than people who are. For us that are on self improvement, we are delaying that happiness for the end goal of more happiness, but even at the “end” of it all, we will not be happy. Instead, we will see that the growth and journey is what makes us fulfilled. Seeking fulfillment is better than happiness.

If we get too wrapped up in ONE source of happiness, we'll burn out. I'm afraid this has to do with fatigue in the brain, as if a neural pathway is being shocked too often and needs time to repair it's self. So, one way to combat this is to practice seeing one thing as multiple sources of happiness to extend the persistence of progressing in that one thing; This is like sharing the neurons through out your brain rather than keeping them focused on one neural pathway. *So, if you like drawing, you can't just pursue the dream to be an important artist alone. You have to share the pathways with the rest of your brain. This is when we include the purpose of our family, when we include motivative music, or we include our sexual motives to evade burn out or depression.*

While its sad that I lost my dad when I was only 12. It was a humbling experience. Having moved to the states with my mom and little brother, I’ve matured quicker than anyone in my age. I became the man of the house at such a young age and its made me more of a humble person. We’ve gone from living in a small apartment to owning our own house now. I recently graduated from college and actually I am about to have a job interview and I didn’t even apply for that job but got talent scouted. Treat everyone with kindness and respect, don’t worry about the stuff you can’t control and when you’re grateful for the little things in life, you will life in abundance.

I personally like the quote “The road to success is always under construction”. No matter where we are or where we are going, there will always be another obstacle to face. So in that sense, life is a journey, and to me it is more important to be content about what is coming next whether it is good or bad, then be happy which to me seems like the final destination in which inevitably results in nothingness straight after, compared to always being content. ‘If what you have seems insufficient to you, then though you possess the world you will yet be miserable.’ Seneca

*For anyone struggling with this question, about what your goal should be or what happiness should mean to you, here's some advice. I just came back from a 2-hour walk of introspecting about this exact topic.* I haven't watched the video yet, so some of these ideas may coincide with the points Hamza makes For reference, I just turned 17 in December, on my self-improvement journey, so I may relate to you. 1. Happiness comes from the struggle: - What this basically means, is when making decisions about pretty much anything, choose the path of most resistance. Paradoxically, working towards something that's out of your comfort zone, or harder in general, brings you more happiness than a quick fix. Example: If you find yourself wanting to improve relationships with people in your life, pick the harder option of starting more conversations, improving eye contact etc. Doing this instead of looking for a compromise, will bring you much more benefit. Note: This is something you'll only understand, the concept of delaying gratification and working towards a goal in the distance when you actually get started. No amount of explanation can substitute the inert feeling you will have when you're personally going through this process. 2. Start asking yourself "What if I was wrong about this?" -Epictetus said, "A man can't learn what he thinks he already knows", and I think this makes so much sense. Often in life, we constrict ourselves to one line of thought, that we create. But happiness comes from realising that you're not always going to be right about things and having the humility to ask for help and learn from others. So start lowering your ego, and embrace the fact, that you don't need to know everything, but are open to the idea of learning it. 3. Understand that the point of life isn't to get rid of your struggles, but to pick, and solve good struggles -This may seem contradictory. But living your life, to get rid of a problem, and having that mindset of "relaxing on the beach for the rest of your life", isn't actually the goal. In fact, we find happiness from pursuing goals that are difficult, and challenging. So think to yourself, what are goals that I'd like to accomplish, and then take up the struggle associated with accomplishing it Finally, this pursuit for happiness isn't a "24-hour challenge", it's a lifelong commitment to improving. I know you may have pressing issues in the present, that you want to change immediately. But when you realise, that real happiness, comes from playing the long game, everything seems to flow a lot smoother Thanks for reading, hope I helped

I had this exact thought today. “I’m so grateful for being so below average” really resonated man. Value comes from the effort you put in.

One thing i've noticed, as a muslim, after watching your videos i've realised that Shaytaan/Satan in the Quran or any Holy Abrahmic book can be interchanged with the word amygdala/lizard brain. This new thought has changed my perception on religion. This whole time every holy book has been talking about the lizard brain that whispers bad thoughts to you. The story of how when the first man, Adam, was created Satan disobeyed and didn't bow down to him just like our lizard brain does not submit to us and is ignorant in it's own mind. Some verses from the Quran, replace it with the amygdala and it still makes sense "‘O my father, serve not Satan; surely, Satan is a rebel against the Gracious God." "It is Satan who only frightens his friends; so fear them not but fear Me, if you are believers." "He holds out promises to them and raises vain desires in them, and Satan promises them nothing but vain things." "As to those who are righteous, when a suggestion from Satan assails them, they remember God: and behold! they begin to see things rightly." "Surely, those who turn their backs after guidance has become manifest to them, Satan has seduced them, and holds out to them false hopes." "O ye who believe! come into submission wholly and follow not the footsteps of Satan; surely, he is your open enemy. "

I still have to finish the Navalmanak, but I believe that the type of happiness that Naval is talking about is more like satisfaction. The short term happiness is something that is always going to be in your life, you have to limit it in order to "not get bored of it". If you do something for a long period of time it's going to get less stimulating, that is why not exaggerating is important. It's crazy to think how these concepts are so well established into different cultures and religions. To be satisfied you have first to accept that you are never going to be satisfied. Having a kid (weather is adopted or is your own blood), is the best type of satisfaction, any other achievement that you ever got before and after having a child is going to be irrelevant, or at least that is what I grasped from existing till now. I also believe that there is no perfect partner to have a child with, you have to find someone that complements your flaws, people can't change you but they for sure can have a really big influence on you, so pick someone with ambition and similar goals as you, and remember that you cannot control them or their past.

True - Happiness is NOT the aim. Whenever you want something really badly, as in the military, the Olympic Boxing Team, a Masters Degree, etc...you're willing to "suffer" for the right reason.

Bro, I have to say that I love your videos, mainly because I feel that we are on the same page. I'm on self improvement too for nearly 2 years now and I like to see the fact that I'm not the only one experiencing strange stuff like this one "happiness" cuz I feel like I've been chasing it for the past 2-3 months. What is even strange is the fact that I've been happier before this last period because I wasn't focusing on it

The greatest satisfaction of man is working towards something greater than himself and knowing he has done the best he possibly can. The fact that so many people just want to be happy when their older shows how selfish we all are . That person cares only about how they feel about their own perceived reality. That is why so many people are unhappy nowadays but the people who dedicate their life to something greater than themselves achieve happiness and contentment indirectly.

Look man Happiness isn't the goal(as it is an emotion and emotions don't stay)..It was always to enter The State of Flow to push/increase your Value 'n' further take Responsibility.Afterwards to be grateful of this...is my actual defination of satisfaction.
