After viewing one of these Tom Lehrer videos for the first time, I went to his Wikipedia page to see if he was still alive, and found out that he had released all of his music and recordings into the public domain. He has a website where you can stream or download ALL of it, for free.

well, IS he still alive?
@JosieAndTheFurbs7 ай бұрын
@@supershinigami1Yep! At least, there's been no news of him dying.
@ScottishVagabond7 ай бұрын
@@supershinigami1yeah he's very old now, I was surprised too. I was basically raised on Tom Lehrer, my dad was a huge fan. The most amazing thing was he got huge fame in the 60s for his comedy songs and then eventually he was like 'been there, done that,' gave up performing and went back to being a maths professor for the rest of his career! 😅

NO WAY. He's even more legendary than I thought.

There is nobody even close to Tom Lehrer. He's just totally awesome on so many levels.

Sheldon Allman has some good and funny songs too. I particularly like “radioactive mama.”

My parents own(ed) one of Tom Lehrer's albums while I was growing up. As an adult I spotted the same album at a yard sale and bought it right away. I love that he released his music to the public domain.

As a chemical engineer student in college 35ish years ago- Tom Lehrer had a huge influence on me. Happy Birthday Tom and many more.

Well, I definitely can wisely choose my new crushes, and 96 old extremely witty and smart man is absolutely my type! Haha, I’m helpless, happy birthday, magnificent Tom!

My ibtroduction to Tom was my grade six teacher who brought the NEW record into school for me. I was precocious. I was so charmed by the music, I brought in mymportable cassette recorder. Holding the microphone up to the speaker of the monophone record player, I became a pirate as I captured the sawtooth tones of the ludicrous lyrics to take home and learn. I have the records and the song book now. Some of his stuff was too topical to work now but most of it is still a delight. I also giggle every time I remember how his music career ended. Record company got a little too pushy so Dr. Lehrer returned to his lucrative career in physics at MIT.

It's not as though he had to do this, you know? He could've been making 3,000$ a year, just teaching!

Happy Birthday to a man I only knew from one song. Ms. Betsy you've got me and my friend hooked.

I just discovered Betsy's channel about a month ago, and thanks to her my love of Tom Lehrer has been rekindled, and I am teaching all my friends the joy of his music (much to their chagrin). Thank you Betsy for reminding me about these old gems!

And thank you, Betsy, for your way of introducing his - and all others - new-old masterpieces for us! I’m not american, but all this aesthetic feels weirdly cool for me, while absolutely terrifying in so many ways

So glad someone as attuned to the moderne era as you loves Tom Lehrer like we who learned his albums off by heart at a tender age do! (Well, except the periodic table of the elements one, jheesh...)

I've just recently caught a few of your shorts, and was delighted for the memories. I was a big fan of Tom Lehrer growing up, and surprised at how many lyrics I remember, like all of them from the first song in this clip. I subscribed and will look over your catalog, but if I don't find National Brotherhood Week, I'm going to write a complain comment below some other video.😁
