As a Brit in the US, I often said any of the 'Happy Veterans Day' ads & sales would send a company out of business across Europe. Ditto with Memorial Day, although that's an American thing, not an international _day of honour_ for those who have died in wars. This is equally crass. I genuinely believe the US is living through/creating a new political extreme: Extremist Capitalism. Nothing else matters except money. Nobody ranks higher than profit. There is no community, no value placed on education, quality of life, creating an equal society, and so on. Politics revolves around money in a way that has never existed before. Just what the 'Founding Fathers', MLK, & all those in between & continuing to fight "for the people" would have wanted. (/s) If you haven't watched 'Don't Look Up' on Netflix yet, it says it all.

I'd argue that the UK is even worse because they're on the opposite end of the spectrum regarding their Veterans Day. Sports players who don't wear the poppy get death threats every time November rolls around.

@@mik7564 I'm speaking specifically about using serious events to market sales. That doesn't happen in the UK. Are you British or American, or have lived in both places? As for extreme capitalism, nobody in the UK gets 6 figures into debt for the sake of getting a degree, but actually requires a (2 year) Master's degree, minimum, to get a job that even comes close to paying it back. We don't have to declare bankruptcy because we get ill, or sell our belongings to pay for medications; or choose between life-saving medications like insulin & food. We don't have the 'wealthiest country in the world' with the highest levels of disparity between rich & poor; low life expectancy; high infant mortality rates... It costs more for the average American, _with insurance_ to have a baby in a hospital than it costs to have a baby at the private Kensington wing where Royal babies are born. I could list so many more. Unless you have experienced living in both places, & can defend what you mean, I disagree with you completely. Even if you think you know, pay attention to politics etc., actually living in the US is an eye-opening experience. (That's not a defense of the UK... or England, more specifically, but things don't come close.)

@@joeycash9739 MLK had a lot to say about a lot of different topics. It’s always better to read from first hand sources ourselves and decide what we believe. Anything else anyone here would respond would be a small part of anything MLK said or stood for. Racism is certainly a big problem, but it can be eradicated. Excusing it as “well, it’s ok because there’s nothing we can do about it” isn’t going to help the problem though. At least in your own personal life, speak up if you see or hear something wrong, be an advocate, respect everyone. If we want to make a better life for all people, it’s gotta start with each of us individually.

While I get what you're trying to say, the way you formulated this makes it come off as rather arrogant and self-indulgent. The current sentence structure implies that your identity as a white woman gives your statement more credibility and importance compared to someone from a different demographic saying the exact same thing. It'd probably be better if you formulated it more in the direction of "Even I, as a white woman, think/realize this [misappropriation/abuse of MLK's name and image] is horrible". That way you relativize your own importance and your identity becomes a tool to support the argument that there is a large and varied group of people who are disgusted by this behaviour (in contrast with your identity by itself being an argument for credibility).
