THey make wonderful pets. Mine is 26. He has about a dozen things he says, but I didn't try to teach them, he learned on his own from my Gray. Strangely enough, the Gray no longer says the things that the Pionus learned from him! It's almost like, 'Here, this is your stand up act, it's all yours!'

I just discovered that these guys even exist. And, they are in my opinion, the most beautiful parrot! I love their facial features and color patterns Their faces look similar to hawks and I really love that...

Pionuses are prone to obesity, so try to feed them plenty of fruit and go easy (but don't completely exclude) seeds. Also, because they're peruvian, they like warm environments, so just be aware you may need your heating on through the winter.

@Bri Yeah, veg is better than fruit, mb. As I said, they're prone to obesity, so yeah, too much sugar is bad.

I REALLY want a Pionus, but my mom doesn’t want a bird that is too loud. Are Pionus’s (from what you know or learned) very loud? Would they annoy people a lot??

They can whistle occasionally and aren’t extremely loud they tend to be very shy the first month or so when getting them. I personally have one and he doesn’t make much noise other than him eating peanuts. Also they make for a good starting bird next to a budgie being the easiest to manage. I really recommend one.

all birds can be loud and scream, these ones are normally pretty timid, mine will chirp at the mirror or in the morning but it's not too loud. I think usually if they have something to do they'll be quiet

Yes, of course, very happy with clipped wings. Like you with cut legs. His behavior is because of need of partner, not happiness.

Natalia Moreva Parrots in captivity don't tend to fly as much. Clipping their wings still gives them the ability to glide short distances. It's nothing like loosing your legs. The feathers grow back over time. This bird is clearly content. Bobbing their head is them regurgitating. They do that when they have strong bonds with others. It's not mating behavior.

They can be quite happy even if they don't fly around. I raised my birds with clipped wings. They walk and climb all around the house. Parrots in nature will climb through a tree rather than fly around it to another branch. Even after teaching them how to fly, they still mostly walk and climb. After all, they think that they are people.

A bit late to the party but I thought better late than never... I understand why you might feel that way about a bird with clipped wings. However, in some situations it can even be beneficial to the pet bird. A great video on this topic is "Should you clip your parrots wings?" by Marlene Mc'Cohen. She goes into each side and with her excessive experience with various species of birds, you can tell she speaks from a lot of evidence for each side and the situations in which a flighted or a clipped bird would be more suitable :)

@@d.e.b.b5788 Just because they "think they are people" they must be aware that those big things on their sides are made for making them fly and it must feel very weird when they know that flapping their wings is supposed to get them somewhere but it's not?
