love this arrangement! Love the singers, but the bass player grabbed my attention first, then the horns, drummer is spot on. This for musicians and I am a drummer, songwriter, and I truly love how the arrangement just takes the original and super-funks it up!! It is truly a nice listenable remake - but, the arrangement was the item here. I am sure the person who put this together (anyone help me with this?) is a musician, also! Great job guys and gals!! Kudo's!!! Oh almost forgot - that mini moog - LOL, love it!! He uses it just right.

Wondering if the arranger isn't Whittaker, the keys guy, since he's one of the few constants on another cut by the band. Amazing arranging!

What in the heck is that apparent real time voice sampling, or voice based synth thing he is holding at 4:35? Very cool, but I tried to look it up and can't find it anywhere. He never holds still long enough to read a name, or even get a good look at it. Can't blame him for that, but is wasn't helpful for what I was trying to do. :-) Great to hear a MOOG on a solo getting a bit of a workout!

Love bands like this who re imagine pop songs through rhythmic and harmonic changes.
@BluesPiano1008 жыл бұрын
Rhythmic yes, but harmonic changes to this extent IMHO produces a full new song... plus I don't really like these particular ones, though they're obviously performed by quite skilled musicians
@soundtreks8 жыл бұрын
I think a song as popular as HAPPY can stand up to some harmonic revision. We all know the original. Another band called Dirty Loops also does fantastic covers (almost jazz fusion) of '80s pop songs. Terrific stuff.

Some advice out there on how to stop listen to this tune? It's not an overstatement to say that I've heard it at least one hundred times. Same with Tim Akers and the Smoking Section's version of Shake It Off.

Not really what you asked, but ... If you like Chicago, give Leonid and Friends (A Ukrainian group that didn't even speak English when some of the early pieces were done, but sing it virtually flawlessly, better diction than many English speaking singers, with a couple of exceptions). They have energy like those session groups you speak of (they may be one, don't know, but they are of that level). "Does Anybody Know What TIme it Is?" is a good place to start. Another one you might search that I was super impressed with is "dave weckl higher ground" for another awesome (I'm assuming) session group with two amazing drummers (Dave played for Chick Corea's Electric Band and many others), and a very cool arrangement. Hope you enjoy them, sorry for adding to your "problem". ;-)

This is your answer: Music like this? It's WAYYYYY over the heads of most people, who need more simplicity and they don't know 'what' to listen FOR! So, they just feel left out, and would rather listen to the original version. This, as I mentioned above, is for us musicians, or those who DO understand what goes into making an awesome version of this and the killer players it requires!! You make a valid point, it's for us who KNOW what goes into this. cheers bud.
