***** no need to put the whole Korean population under the stamp "rude" tho haha, I only mentioned the people in the studio.
@jeehoondevil9 жыл бұрын
It's called a joke. Because let's face it, as much as we don't want to mention it, it's obvious suzy is the most famous member in Miss A, and got the nickname "nation's first love" in Korea. So he just took this male generalization of what people thought and made the joke. Also if you notice, after that joke introduction, they NEVER mentioned Suzy again or compared Fei to Suzy, or asked questions about Suzy to her. They had specific individual questions just for Fei.
@mewmewzoey73949 жыл бұрын
Jeehoondevil the fact is,they shouldn't mention Suzy every time a member of Miss A is on a show. I love Miss A and all the members but tbh are more talented then Suzy,she's the "face" of the group that's why she's every where and honestly it's gotten pretty annoying. it's like Miss A is Suzy and her backup dancers
@jeehoondevil9 жыл бұрын
Mewmew zoey Luckily other members of Miss A are getting more popular now as well. For example Fei's been appearing in a lot of variety shows and CFs. I wouldn't compare who has more talent as they each have their own talents in different fields. Also some people may refer Miss A like that because Miss A hasn't released an album in a while. It happened with 4minute too. 4minute used to be called Hyuna and her backup dancers as she had gotten popular through bubble pop and gangnam style. But they've been releasing a lot of albums and all of them are well known now.

Lastly, if you're fair you can tell the people in the episode were merely exchanging experiences without judgment. You can't talk about large groups of people without generalizing, that's only the nature of the beast. Personally I love how these themes are introduced on Korean TV, as it creates awareness for the people on TV and the viewers, which is the first step in learning about other cultures.

to anyone worried about the racism and stuff in this episode: it's kind of just an asian thing. you'd find this similarly in china and other countries. if you find yourself getting mad, just try to remember the mentalities of americans towards asians during jungyu's time because that's how it was and it's what he's used to. asians in general like lighter skin and more house-wife-ish women. it's just a culture difference and i'm sure they don't really mean all of what they say (or at least they're not saying it with bad intentions), since this program is mainly for laughs.

Anyone who claims racism after watching this show is trivializing racism in a way that is not okay. In what possible way was the show denigrating a different racial culture or claiming Asian superiority? All of the conversations revolved around revealing and contrasting cultures without passing normative judgments about which was better. Noticing differences is "awareness," not hatred or bigotry or discrimination.
@Cornflower2810 жыл бұрын
AutumnByakko Can't agree w/you more on that point. It's like you can't talk about real cultural differences at all these days without people getting upset about it. There are cultural differences in the world, and if you don't know about them then you may offend someone.

I get what u mean. It's kinda hard to watch when most of what they r saying doesn't sound that great. And honestly though I feel like if the wheels were turned and an American had a bad experience in Korea they probably would react similar. Because I feel like as humans we just all jump to conclusions way too fast and think that our own experiences r the only type of experiences.

I understand what you mean since I'm a Korean American and I've been in America all my life but the Korean part of myself knows that Korean humor is different than American humor. What Koreans find funny and entertaining may be offensive in America since the cultures are different because what's politically correct in Korea is different than America. Also some of the translations weren't all correct. I was also offended at some of the comments they made too but that's just for entertainment purposes.

+lovelaughsmile1000 You're absolutely right. Especially in this day and age, we shouldn't be generalising and stereotyping, particularly about race and culture. Korea has a way to go in that respect. But then a lot of Western cultures need to consider their own actions as well. Respect has to go both ways. There's still an attitude in Western countries that it's okay to stereotype Asians (especially saying "it's all the same") when it's actually really offensive. I was born and raised in Australia under really Westernised influences, but it's still offensive to me, because yes, you shouldn't treat people differently because of the way they physically look (racially), but at the same time, you shouldn't completely ignore their heritage and culture either. Westerners see it as a joke when they make fun of Asian cultures and stereotype, but take it extremely offensively when they find out Asians are doing the same to them. We could all do with a bit of perspective and a bit less stereotyping.
@emilywang7379 жыл бұрын
That is really true and I agree but i also think it's not saying everyone is like that but it just seems as if both sides can do a little less of the stereotype thing.

Why are people getting so offended..... they're just talking about their experiences .. I guess it's different for Korean Americans cause we get both cultures and the translations are quite off, but I personally found nothing to be racist ... People need to chill out sometimes
@CheekyTraveller10 жыл бұрын
I think Americans are more likely to find some of the wording racist because of our history with racism. We have become so politically correct that a simple word spoken in the "wrong" makes people want to riot. When I lived in Korea there were things that I cringed at seeing or hearing, but I had to remember that Korea has a very homogeneous society. Very few people have experience with foreigners and/or foreign cultures that doesn't come from their TV screen. How can Koreans possibly understand something an American finds cringe worthy when most of the shows we export to them offer very little, if any, historical references to our cultural behaviors? Consider the representations of non-whites in American television and films. How many of them are true representations and not just cartoonish versions of what we think their cultures are like? I would rather see people giving an honest representation of their personal experiences in our country than opinions based on the shows we export, some of which do not show women as more than sex-hungry, bed-hoppers who like to shop.
@armv7-m6039 жыл бұрын
koreanc95 A lot of the domestic viewers will take these exaggerated views as fact and blow them out of proportion. Look at what that one woman said earlier on, "They are amazed that Koreans can memorize the multiplication table". That is just mind blowing ignorance and because of the little exposure to the world that korea has, the public will have negative views of westerners specifically American before even meeting them.

The sneezing thing is because in the European countries there was the Plagues and other horrible diseases that happened in the dark ages etc, and so many tons of people died. So since it was a Christian or church related culture in EU (the Western world), people were saying they felt sad someone was likely going to die because they sneezed (while ill). The hygiene was minimal back then and no real medical like science today in modern times. So if you got sick, you likely died. Back then people were living together and getting sick and dying. People were all over the streets and everywhere just dying. So it was a very serious thing. Most likely when people said God bless you... it was as they were running by the person to avoid them and not catch the illness and die. The saying followed the British, Italians, Irish and French people as they came to America and Canada to settle here, and since most were religious or Christian it was part of the culture and a typical saying. People still say it today. Likely not so much in liberal areas as much as you would hear it from those who have Christian background (anywhere USA) or are from the Southern US states. Now its more of a nice thing to say. But the history of the saying was very "grave".

Ok so as a black woman the conversation amused and offended me. It was funny when they explained their experiences with black people but to judge a whole race of people by the few you knew in the 1980s is stupid. It's sad in 2014 they are still so ignorant of other countries cultures, I mean the generalization was crazy even when Sam talked about Western women it was enough to make me cringe. South Korea has a long way to go to become internationalized if this is still the attitude most Koreans have. Not to say they all do but smh this was kind of disappointing.
@jenniferlee300710 жыл бұрын
I agree about the generalization. I was cringing too. However, Korea is still a very homogenous place so I don't think most Koreans have been exposed to foreign cultures. Compared to when I had just moved to South Korea it's gotten A LOT better but I agree. Korea still has a long way to go. Sorry you felt offended but I hope you understand that not all Koreans feel the same way!
@LeoDan80810 жыл бұрын
I'm glad it is getting better but it's just kind of sad. We have to fight stereotypes hard enough as it is right here in the US and it's the same thing if not worse over there. I don't believe for one second all Koreans think this way, but I just want to be judged by who I am as a woman and as a person not by my complexion. Generalization and stereotypes are stupid lol.
@copymizer10 жыл бұрын
funny because you're the one generalizing now
@AW-ex8fn6 жыл бұрын
it didn't seem to me they were generalizing when speaking of african americans. I watched it as specific to his time frame of the 80s and LA in the 80s was rough. however what I took most offense was the way Sam spoke about western women in comparison to korean. it was not only a stereotype but also telling of his underlying subscription to patriarchy that remains prevalent especially in south korea. but to be honest, people should really not take their experiences as truth of course. Like drinking? There is such a thing as social drinking and it really depends on the culture or city/geographic location in America.
