The TV show was based on a true story. But they moved too far away from the real story. The girl was beaten often. Once she was beaten heavily like in the last scene, but it was for a different reason. The book of the girl's memoir "Child of Happy Valley" is very good and readable. It tells more interesting stories than the corporal punishment she received.

Juanita Carberry wrote a book about her childhood. All that happened in this film was entirely true. According to the book it appears that the final beating shown in the film isn't accurate. She was caned across the backside. Not her back. The police officer was quite embarrassed when she showed him the marks on her bum.

My parents are in jail for child abusing me and my brother. They would him me with a stick on the back or tie me to my bed and whip me. They hit my brother on the butt with a belt with spikes and he's 4! One day when we at school the teacher saw a scar on my face and shoulder and pulled me aside to tell me why I have it. I didn't tell her they abuse me though..I don't know why:( then when I got home my mom was holding my brother on her lap and started spanking him hard that it was red..I think the neighbors heard the crying but did nothing. So, I told them I was gonna do my chores and went upstairs to my room and called the police and they went to jail! No only does she not flinch she smiles a bit, and then we learn that that was her third punishment that week. They were developing her character for us so that we can understand how she can give beatings without thinking twice about them, because she seemingly enjoyed them herself. Look closely at the girl's face in the first scene, it is a flashback to Tappy when she was in school.

I am told the number of strokes I will be getting. Usually 4,5 or 6 but once I got 8. These are all administered on my backside over my shorts, never on bare flesh. It's terribly painful and sure I get welts but never to point of breaking my skin and bleeding. I think I deserve the canings and they are fair & propotionate for what I did.

Relocating to the fledgling British colony of Kenya in the 1920s allowed these rich, spoiled people to indulge the kind of behaviour that would not have been possible in England without sparking outrage or attracting the attentions of the press, the authorities or the police. Public school renegades (most of them old Etonions) such as John Carberry, Josslyn Hay and Sir Jock Delves Broughton lived above the law and could act out on all their baser impulses unchecked. John Carberry apparently was well known for his cruelty and sadism.

@lyn7girl I remember seeing this movie during a summer I spent in Britain over 20 years ago, and was absolutely horrified. @@roustus66 Actually, there is (or was) no bar on child nudity in Britain for films or TV, and Holly Aird was about 17 when she did this anyway. The reason is more to due with the fact that Holly was notoriously shy about doing nudity. the events in this film have been exaggerated for dramatic effect. she was never beaten with a rhino whip or left with blood soaked cloths. if you read her own account of her childhood she says she never received more than 12 strokes with a cane and usually less, which was probably not out of the ordinary in those days.
@theradgegadgie63529 жыл бұрын
I have read her account and she specifically says she was once left with her shorts and blouse soaked through with blood. (The day she went to the police station, as accurately depicted here.) She also mentions that that wasn't the only time blood was drawn from her, as some batty governess drew blood with a shoe tree (courtesy of a metal spring built into it), when she used it on her. What isn't accurate is that in the book she specifically mentions that her father-who-turned-out-not-to-be-her-father never laid a hand on her, he was always getting some governess or other to do it. The amount done in that last, rather revolting, scene is more than she says happened in the book, but 12 is more than enough to draw blood, even if it isn't done with a sjambok. On that subject, 12 strokes was pretty exceptional even at public schools in the 19th century. Not unheard of, but pretty rare. Being done to a girl, especially one nearly grown up, was a HELL of a lot rarer.
@declanchristmas99419 жыл бұрын
i stand corrected, i must admit i was repeating something i heard second hand so it wasn't corroborated. as to whether 12 strokes was rare i still think there would have been alot of abusive adults treating children such even if not drawing blood.

Only the brutish instrument he employed for beating me up was one of my brothers whose sadistic tendencies meant he jumped at every opportunity to beat me. Needless to say, I had little contact with my family for years. I have been in therapy for years. I suffered panic attacks. I am now in therapy for more specialised treatment for Complex Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. I now have a loving husband, thank goodness. However, I have had some very unpleasant abusive phone calls from my sadistic brother, the only surviving member left. This was like a few years ago and a horrific reminder of the past. I was called a number of highly abusive names beginning with B and C. In one call, he accused me of committing fraud against him. In another, he slandered my husband to me and swore at me for no reason. I had 3 of these calls, and since then, I blocked him from my phone. There was another drama very similar to this called Flame Trees of Thikka or something. I think Holly Aird was in that too.

I got a belt but there were never marks. But it HURT! and it sucked emotionally. It was the reserved punishment, wasn't more than 2, maybe 3 times a year. It worked in the 80s.

How could have there been no marks if you got the belt? Unless you were tapped with it.

@@nonameyet9165 Even red skin is still a 'mark' though. The belt would have caused damage to the flesh below your skin which caused your blood to rise to the surface, hence the redness.

This is sadism, absolute and sheer sadism, NOT discipline. Juanita didn't deserve those beatings. When I got the back of my legs smacked, it was for being disrespectful, so if you're going to spank your child, at least do it when it's necessary, and not with a stick. I think using a stick to punish is too harsh.

I think your parents know exactly what they are doing, very good. Whipping the thighs is even more painful than the back. Of course not too hard either, but perhaps instead of a stick maybe a nice long heavy leather belt, yes? Give those thighs a little shine and then let you walk in a short skirt so everybody knows you've been punished. I've been punished hard as a kid myself, so I know what's good :-)

Research shows that ANY hitting has backfire effects. Sure a seat will get your kids to stop behaving quicker...at first. Then they grow thick skin, a swats no longer enough, they learn to hit others to get their way in life, AND they never learned a true lesson. Patience and communication take longer but have lasting effects and help model the child into a more patience and respectful adult. Treat other beings as you would want to be treated! Some other countries have outlawed corporal punishment. Amazing you cant hit a stranger, your wife, or an animal (there are laws protecting them) but what protects the defenseless children? They are growing and learning how to grow and develop their coping abilities. So next time your toddler is crying and throwing a tantrum just imagine someone screaming and hitting you while your distressed; would it calm you down?

Miss Mel The wisdom of the ages shows that a hard slap to the cheeks quickly discourages all sorts of nuisance from a child. And if that's sometimes not enough then it's proven itself from the dawn of man to today that a good whipping from the old man does wonders. You know what, I got the belt and so did all the other kids I went to school with. It's normal. As far as you're concerned I hope you get someone in your life that has been raised exactly the way you think is right. And that you can't get rid of him or her.

Disciplining a child is part of being a good parent, but hitting a child is *always* wrong & a sure sign you've failed. An accidental smack which can happen to the best of parents when they're frustrated, sleep deprived etc may not traumatize a child, but it only teaches them that it's ok to hit others: animals, siblings, schoolmates, and later in life their spouse.

I am a very strong anti CP, because if you beat a child, the wound in body will heal quickly, but the wound in the mind will not heal that easily. There are so many other methods to rectify a child. Using the cane shows what a poor administrator you are.
