It was. You can’t fully appreciate it unless you were there, but it truly felt like the future. We had AOL Instant Messenger back then, which was mind-blowing enough to 12 year old me, but actually seeing a digital representation of a real person that you could communicate with was on a whole new level. It felt like magic or something. It’s crazy that was 20 years ago. It feels like last week.

Not as mind-blowing for a PC gamers, but for an RPG dungeoncrawler on consoles sure. PSO plays basically like a 3D version of Diablo 1 more than anything. I hesitate to call it an MMORPG, since really most players only meet in a lobby and once they start a session it has a 4 player limit. Compare that to very early MMORPGs like Meridian 59, Nexus, Ultima Online, Dark Eden, Asheron's Call and Everquest. Now those were mind-blowing. Despite that PSO was and still is fun. You can join servers like Ephinea or Schthack today and have un on PC.

It's still fun on private servers. I like the simplicity of the combat combined with some more complex systems for developing your character. And I really like hunting for specific items when you know which monsters drop that item.

Heavens Punisher, coolest weapon in the game. During certain real time hours it is a regular pistol, but during the other hours it locked on to every enemy in the room and rained down beams of light on enemies. I was given a Dreamcast by a friend and only ever had two games on it. Test Drive 6 and PSO. I don't remember ever getting past the forest level in the beginning, but that's most likely because I was so young and basically incapable of playing the game. I just walked around the hub a lot when I felt overwhelmed from failing at the combat. Would love to give it another go these days.

We had broadband very early, so the Dreamcast broadband adapter remains one of the first and only imports I've ever done. Was kind of expensive, especially as we weren't exactly well off, but man I'm glad we got it. 56k was such a pain, and we hadn't used it for literal years by the time PSO hit, so trying to go back was out of the question for me. And now if I feel like it I can just boot it up on my Steam Deck and play with a surprisingly active community. It no longer entertains me quite like it used to, but it's fun to pop in from time to time. Would really love a new PSO more in this style. Not necessarily as slow or as tedious, but a bit more methodical and designed properly for controller play. PSO 2 is absolutely terrible on controllers (navigating a hotbar with a D-Pad is tremendously stupid, a mistake I've only seen Final Fantasy XIV 1.0 make, even PSO 1 had the right idea with the very first concept of what would now be considered a cross hotbar, which ironically FFXIV 2.0 nailed!) and even if I switch over to keyboard and mouse, it feels somehow... off. Especially New Genesis.

This was really next-gen for it's time, but console & games were sooo expensive for people since people already invested so much money into previous consoles & games. Also, money was worth x2 time more back then vs today in purchasing power of the dollar. Therefore, games were actually $160 + tax each, and the console like $600 + tax. That's one of the main reasons why people didnt buy into this system. Plus all the super expensive peripherals & internet connection prices back then. It also had poor marketing where most people didn't know about it being released. This game was a flop in sales, and yet incredible for it's time!

For those that want to replay this game with online, google Ephinea private server. It's the PC version (Blue Burst) and it's a simple installer + account creation and you're up and running. Totally free. I highly recommend the server, and I'd recommend giving it a shot for veterans and newcomers alike. This game has a rhythm to its combat that harmonizes with the loot system in a way that virtually no other looters have recaptured. The way damage and attack speed impacts the general combat loop makes new loot extremely exciting and refreshing in a way that no other looter has matched. As a result, this content-lite and extremely simple game can remain fun for hundreds of hours, even today. I wish we could get a new PSO game that tries to recapture that aspect of this classic, instead of only focusing on making combos flashy and "haha numbers go brrrr".

My issue with private servers is theres not enough of a user base. Why the hell do we need like 20 different private servers. Why did scthack ever give out his research and allow people to make other servers. Really wish they'd all just combine.
@DeToxCommunity
@DeToxCommunity 3 жыл бұрын
@@Clesarie Pretty much the entire player base is on Ephinea. People also want different things from the game, so most of the time there are different servers because they all have different changes to the game. Ephinea is basically vanilla but rebalanced a bit and with some extra content. Ultima is boosted rates and different events and what not. Destiny is an extensive rebalance with a bunch of new content. There's plenty of reasons, really. I do get the sentiment though. Also schthack and ephinea are based on 2 different codebases. There's also the matter of schthack being terribly run and losing all of their players data because they never made a single backup, ever, and had 1 point of failure...so for that at least, I'm glad there were other options.

But back then, that first time you log in was sort of like going to a whole new world. I still play PSO. I go through a phase every few years where I play it compulsively like it's new again. I can't ever see a day where I won't play it, even if it's just to log in and listen to the music. Truly one of the all time great games.

I was only 11 when this came out, probably about 12 when I first started playing. I still remember the first time going into Forest with my lvl 1 HUmar and actually running back to the safe zone behind the gate when a Booma popped up, I got so scared. My heart was pounding as I took down the first Booma and when I saw the red pool of blood on the body I freaked out even more. But since then I was just so happy to play and when it came to GC I went full on and did 4 player split screen with my pals. We would do forest to ruins runs split screen. and now 20 years later I still log into Ephinea server and play around just for Nostalgia sake. PSO is so special that the Nostalgia just adds for me each time I start it up again, It never ruins the old feeling I had when I was a kid it was that special of a game.

Same here for me. I remember being so young but being so excited because it was like a whole new world of video games. I don't go back to it very often because I got sick and tired of the loot treadmill style of video games after playing them so much that I don't play them anymore. Phantasy Star online is one of those special ones that I will play pretty much every five or six years and put in a couple hundred hours and then tell myself "yep I'm good." and stop playing again. Sometimes the Nostalgia just takes over and I wish I could go back to when I was young again to do it all over.

I got PSO for Dreamcast when it first came out but since I was so young, for some reason I couldn’t manage to go online. I finally played Phantasy Star Online on Xbox Live from June 2003 to November 2003. It was a brief period, the memories last a lifetime. I went by matrixEXE, ROY EXE, Atlantis, and Mika. They were mostly HUmars and FOmars. I was one of the annoying 12 year old kids. 😅 Even if you just pumped out videos solely about Phantasy Star Online, I’d still watch every single one! I always come back to your PSO videos to relive my PSO glory days. Thank you for the videos and looking forward to more!

This has a private server now, has for a while actually. A lot of younger gamers are discovering it. It held up pretty well. A lot of older, online console games are seeing a bit of a revival lately. People are tired of AAA devs/publishers and their lack of innovation and greedy bs. Hopefully EQOA private server devs work their asses off and get that server up and running soon as well. That would make 3 console MMORPG's with private servers. FFXI being the other one. All 3 are fantastic games and very different from one another.

There are ways to play the dreamcast version online in 2024, but I'd recommend playing the pc version called Blue Burst on the private server Ephinea, if you want to play PSO the way it was intended to be played, you can easily find players there.

Totally understand that “jump” in graphics and gameplay. Life got in the way in the early 2000s, so I didn’t get to enjoy much of the PS2/OG Xbox generation. Played a few games, but that was it. Even then I played my N64/PS1 more. So when I first put in Assassin’s Creed and Modern Warfare in my PS3 my jaw dropped. Couldn’t believe my eyes. Those two games were what got me back into gaming.

It's a standout for many of us for a reason. In my mind it will always serve as the golden age of console gaming. Devs weren't as restricted and could more fully realize their projects, innovation was much more prevalent as nobody had really cemented a 3D industry standard yet, plus the speeds allowed in gameplay drastically changed. The Dynasty Warriors games blew everyones mind with how fluid, fast and crisp things were. The last generation to be DLC and bs scumbag practice free. No loot boxes, no mobile cash grab trash. But if a game shipped like crap, it stayed that way. Only tradeoff i guess. Well worth it imo after the past few years of "release it now patch it later" bs going on in the industry. We're clearly in a dark period, but then again one could make that assertation in regards to all things in life currently, i suppose.

Your video here inspired me to dig out my pandemic refurbished Dreamcast (it had a bad door switch) and my original copy of PSO from twenty years ago. I just started from scratch with my 4x memory card and I am re-learning everything. I also took a page from your character overview and named mine ToeJam (with white hair and a red outfit).
