Amazing video Johnny, this makes me want to break out the game right now and start it up. You are so right though the animation is unbelievable and man those dungeons STILL hold up I love it.

DUUDE! that was an EPIC episode!!! I loved the reboot of the first episode. Great production values also! I like how the master system cartridge zooms into the screen and transitions into the gameplay footage! The walk down the old neighborhood is touching everytime! back in 1991 i used to walk to my friends house down the road to play link to the past when it first launched! this was a classic HCG episode! congrats on 100! here's to 100 more!!

Congrats man on the 100th video! I have to say, this one is honestly my favorite one that you've done so far. Your love of PS really shines through and makes this video fantastic. I agree 100% with your ending statement about the experiences we have with these games. It truly is amazing how something as simple as plastic and chips can evoke so much nostalgia and emotion, to a point where some of us are still talking about it today. Great job again man!

I started with Phantasy Star 4, kinda just fell into my lap when I was a kid and that game blew me away though I had seen great rpgs before. My memories of it were similar. I was like: "It's like an anime MOVIE" with all the cutscenes. I didn't know two things I learned from this video though. I played phantasy star from the GBA collection and I don't remember the cutscenes showed here. That's so sad if that was in the original and I never got to see it. And didn't even know it existed. I also didn't realize it was THAT early of a game. Seriously, I didn't know it helped codified the stuff or that it might be the first where you pick up characters as the story goes along that have their own distinctiveness like that. These things are so common that never dawn on me. But even without that, and the cutscenes(though that really does hurt me, makes me want to play a version with it), I was enjoying Phantasy Star one. The bright color palette, the fusion of magic in an advanced society with airports. I love that, I love thundercats, and like it was mentioned in the video, there was an obvious starwars inspiration. Though the star wars of those types, things seemed more run down while even with an evil king, phantasy star seemed more modern. In some ways it was only slightly futuristic, while also being fantastical, basically the balance is different. I didn't beat it though, I couldn't reach medusa in the second trip to her. So my favourite is still four. But I've always wanted to give it a second shot. In general I find rpgs from that nes era hard to play but Phantasy star is the one I've tried that I got furthest into. The world was just that enjoyable, it was more like things to come in the snes era. And to think it's that early on.

What a great 100th video, just perfect! :D I can totally relate to how important this game was and is for you - for me it was Wonder Boy In Monster Land on the Master System from around the same time. Man the memories... you totally reminded me of my own mind-being-blown-for-the-first-time experiences with games at that time, and plus you did an excellent overview of Phantasy Star which indeed is an awesome game! Congratulations on 100 and here's to many more! :D

Love the video and I LOVE Phantasy Star I. My favorite game of all time. Sure, there are alot of excellent games since (e.g., Ocarina of Time, Symphony of the Night, etc.), but this was the game that really opened my eyes to RPGs and where I felt so immersed in the world they created. Absolutely amazing for its time and so polished for an 8-bit game. A gaming experience I'll always remember.

Just finished a playthrough. It feels like a DD session in 8-bit form. It was a super grind heavy, with a ton of random encounters. I don't know how people got through this game without a walkthrough. I really enjoyed my time with the game though. Looking forward to diving into Phantasy Star II next.

Awesome review! :) The way you feel about Phantasy Star is the same way I feel about the original PC DOS version of Prince of Persia. Just seeing the animation, feeling the rhythm, and holding my breath for what was around the corner really made me see gaming as an artform.

Good video gets you right into the game. I was thinking about the whole nostalgia thing the other day with games. My strongest one was playing snow brothers at a local store and thinking this is incredible, i think it`s when people making the games really get their closest to their creations as they can get that creates those moments.

I have to admit, I started out as a Final Fantasy fan. I started really late into playing Phantasy Star because my first PS is PS Online for the Game Cube. Then I tried the GBA release of the Genesis games. Wow, they are quite hard, the 3D dungeons made me dizzy. Anyways, I love the artwork for the game and was attracted to the character design. It's a very unique series. Nice review again!

Great gamem congrats. on 100 videos. The majority of us gamers have similar stories like me for example my friends use to come by to play mk 3 and other games on the mega drive. Or when I got my saturn staying hours and hours playing tomb raider or king of fighters or any other game. We make teams for the sport games and arcade and when one of us got a different system we combined to play in each others houses man those were the days.

I don't know what would of happened if I didn't play Phantasy Star in 1990. I probably wouldn't be into RPGs or gaming in general. I owe so much to that game. A few years later Landstalker & Shining Force 2 would come out and have bigger impact on me. Back in the early 90's square didn't have much out in Australia so I always considered Sega to be the King of RPGs. Thank you for the Vid Johnny. Because of you more people will know about Phantasy Star.
