We Filipinos are asian. we're not Pacific Islander. Its only in the US where they ask that question. We have hispanic culture from Spain, but we also have asian culture deeply ingrained. We're ethnically Malay, like the Malaysians and Indonesians, and other brown skinned southeast asians like Brunei.

Hi Fernando and Vanessa! 👋 hope you notice this comment. I have a cool explanation of Fernando's thought about "Portugese being the first to explore Philippines". It is because, before Magellan led the expedition to the Philippines under the Crown of Spain. Magellan was Portugese by birth. Before he serve Spain, Magellan already have an experience sailing eastward of the Globe under his Mother Land Portugal where he landed with portugese explorers and fought natives from Modern day India and other southeast asian lands. The fact that Portugal, by the Treaty of Tordesillas, which splits the newly discovered lands under the two Historic Superpower Nation of that time, Spain and Portugal. Spain being the owner of the Western part of discovered land while Portugal on the East. Simple to say that Portugese explorers already have a freedom to sail in Asia after that treaty. They may not have an official writings about the lands of the philippines, but for sure, they may had step the land before it was known as the "Las Islas Filipinas" as baptized by Spain under Miguel Lopez de Legazpi. Portugese even reached Japan during those time. So no doubt, the portugese might be first to wander the lands of the east. 👍

You might want to visit Porac Pampanga where the Aeta community is located and immerse with them. Aetas are the indigenous tribe of the Philippines. There are other wonderful tourist spots in Pampanga as well so I'm pretty sure that will be an awesome trip for both of you.

Portuguese didn't land the Philippines, they turned to the west indies. During the Spanish era, the British came and invaded the Philippines and destroy Spanish fortress in Manila for 7 years. Due of lack of food and immunization, the British troops retreat on the Palawan area and went down to Malaysia and colonized them and went Up to China. Then Spain reign back again, after 10 years, American came and conquered Manila first and made the Spanish surrendered. Americans invaded the Philippines until 1950 of July 4th.

We Filipinos are siblings of other Asians, cousins of Hispanics and Latinos, and neighbors of Pacific Islanders. We always study and learn in school especially during junior high school that we are Asians, and specifically we are Southeast Asians, but for me personally, I think we are unique on our own as a multicultural, multi-ethnic, and multilinguistic nation and people with rich history and influences from around the world.

In the spanish era religion was introduced, like christian, and all those other religions, I still remember this "the first statue of like Jesus, and the other ones, the Sto. Niño, the first Sto. Fun Fact: There was a brief period during the 7 years war between the British and the French where the British arrived at Manila on 1762 and stayed there for 2 years and because of this, Spain joined the war and fought the British at the Battle of Manila on 1762. If the British won that battle, the Philippines could very well be a British colony.

Well if it's all about language, (exept from Spanish) I think Indonesian or Malaysian languages are more closely the same with Tagalog, Bisaya, or Cebuano compared to Chinese. Hahaha... Like sinta, ako, kamu, mahal, etc... Same origin Austronesian Languages. That's what I only think tho, hehe...
