Meaning:
O my mind, sing the praises of the Lord, for He is your true companion. The opportunity of this human life is slipping away; heed my advice before it is too late. You have attached great love to wealth, chariots, riches, and kingdoms, but when the noose of death tightens around your neck, all will become worthless and abandon you. O foolish one, despite knowing and understanding the truth, you have wasted your life. You have not refrained from committing sins, nor have you let go of your pride. Listen, O brother, to the teachings of the Guru, for they show the right path. Nanak proclaims with urgency-seek refuge in the Lord, for He alone can save you.
ਹੇ ਮਨ, ਤੂੰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਲਾਹ ਗਾਇਨ ਕਰ, ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਉਹੀ ਤੇਰਾ ਅਸਲ ਸਾਥੀ ਹੈ। ਇਹ ਮਨੁੱਖਾ ਜੀਵਨ ਦਾ ਅਵਸਰ ਤੇਜ਼ੀ ਨਾਲ ਬੀਤ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ, ਮੇਰੀ ਗੱਲ ਮੰਨ ਲੈ। ਤੂੰ ਧਨ, ਰਥ, ਰਾਜ ਪਦਵੀ ਤੇ ਸੰਪਤੀ ਨਾਲ ਘਣਾ ਮੋਹ ਜੋੜ ਲਿਆ, ਪਰ ਜਦੋਂ ਮੌਤ ਦੀ ਫਾਹੀ ਤੇਰੀ ਗਲ ਵਿੱਚ ਪੈ ਜਾਏਗੀ, ਤਦ ਇਹ ਸਭ ਕੁਝ ਬੇਗਾਨਾ ਹੋ ਜਾਏਗਾ। ਹੇ ਮੂਰਖ! ਤੂੰ ਸਭ ਕੁਝ ਜਾਣ ਕੇ ਵੀ ਆਪਣੇ ਜੀਵਨ ਨੂੰ ਵਿਅਰਥ ਗੁਆ ਲਿਆ। ਤੂੰ ਪਾਪ ਕਰਦੇ ਹੋਏ ਹਿਆਉ ਨਹੀਂ ਕੀਤਾ ਅਤੇ ਅਹੰਕਾਰ ਵੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਛੱਡਿਆ। ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਗੁਰੂ ਨੇ ਜਿਸ ਤਰੀਕੇ ਨਾਲ ਉਪਦੇਸ਼ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਧਿਆਨ ਨਾਲ ਸੁਣ। ਨਾਨਕ ਬੇਨਤੀ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ-ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਸ਼ਰਨ ਲੈ, ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੀ ਸ਼ਰਨ ਹੀ ਤੈਨੂੰ ਬਚਾ ਸਕਦੀ ਹੈ।
