I'm not talking politics or Basit Ali's statement here. But Basit Ali the man himself Since very few in younger generation know him but for me it's very different. Just imagine a child born in 80s and started following cricket in 90s. When i was sitting in front of TV screen watching sharja cup pakistan vs West indies match. I was too small but still had the idea how strong was wet indies bowling line up and how miserable Pakistani batting against the windies. You younger generation of today have no idea how strong westindies side uasd to be once. But on that day Pakistan were like 16 runs in 15 overs for 3 batting first. Everyone thought it was all Done and dusted for Pakistan until a guy came to bat whos name was Basit Ali It was my first introduction to Basit Ali since I was young and new to cricket. But that introduction turned into eternal love once he started hitting windies. Brian Lara later said that he never saw his bowlers being beaten so mercilessly. Indeed Ambrose, Walsh, etc... That frightening Bowling line up would have never imagined in the wildest of dreams what was happening. It was Basit Ali who took over the west indies aftet Pakistan were like 16 runs in 15 overs. I saw the best inning of my entire life in that young age. Basit Ali kept on sending the ball out of the fence for fours and sixes as if he was batting against school children and not against the most fearsome bowling attack the world ever seen. He scored 127 and completed his 100 on just 67 balls. The second fastest hundred of that time. After the 50 overs completed the scoreboard showed, Pakistan : 286 in 50 overs. That seemed an optical illusion or dream considering the position they were earlier, 16 runs in 15 overs. That was when I fell in love with the guy. I was hardly 7, 8. I loved his batting style, Ioved his walking style. I loved the way he looked. I loved the way he chewed bubble gum. I collected the news papers and magazines containing news about him and his pictures and posters. I still remember how people compared him with Javed mian dad but with also his contemporaries like Sachin and Mark waugh. Basit Ali's career had just taken off and he was destined to be one of the all times cricket greats. I remember his incredible carribean tour somewhere early 90s where he played windies pacers at will when the world feared them. I loved Basit Ali the stylish. I tried to emulate him in every way I could. How he batted and how he ran for catches was so beautiful. I was too young and too obsessed about Basit my superstar. I remember new zealand tour and Basit 's 103 inning studded with beauty and elegance. I loved his gutsy 57 on another occasion. Basit was destined to be a superstar and I was growing up in the 90s. Now after 20 years later I see Basit Ali sitting on a TV channel and making a controversial statement about game between England and India. The many people across Pakistan and india abusing him and insulting him ceaselessly. Some asking about his identity. Who he is. We never heard of him. This is too much for me. Way too much. I can't take this. I can't bear this. My hero and my my superstar. The first ever cricketer I saw on screen and idealized. but it's so hard to say anything. The agony, the anguish, frustration and disappointment I bore even before is another matter. What happend to Basit Ali destined to be a superstar.? Totally different matter.
