Bhai Tara Singh Wan was an eighteenth-century Sikh martyr. He hailed from the village of Wan, also known as Wan Tara Singh and Dall-Wan, which is now in the Amritsar district of Eastern Punjab. His father, Sardar Gurdas Singh, had received the rites of the Khalsa during the time of Guru Gobind Singh Sahib and had participated in the Battle of Amritsar (6 April 1709), where Bhai Mani Singh led the Sikhs, and a revenue official named Har Sahai was killed by Gurdas Singh. Bhai Tara Singh Nihang, the eldest of Gurdas Singh’s five sons, was born around 1687. He took Amrit from Guru Gobind Singh ji and grew up to be a devout Sikh skilled in martial arts.
During Mughal rule, the village heads (Chaudhary) held considerable authority over the local population. One such person, Sahib Rai, was the lambardar (head) of village Naushahra. He was cruel and often let his horses loose in the green fields of Sikh farmers, causing extensive damage to their crops. When the farmers complained, he responded with insults and threats. ਗੁਰੂ ਅੰਗਦ ਦੇਵ ਜੀ (੩੧ ਮਾਰਚ ੧੫੦੪-੧੬ ਅਪ੍ਰੈਲ ੧੫੫੨) ਸਿੱਖਾਂ ਦੇ ਦੂਜੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਸਨ । ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦਾ ਜਨਮ ਪੰਜਾਬ ਦੇ ਮੁਕਤਸਰ ਜਿਲ੍ਹੇ ਦੇ ਸਰਾਏ ਨਾਗਾ ਪਿੰਡ ਵਿੱਚ ਹੋਇਆ । ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦਾ ਬਚਪਨ ਦਾ ਨਾਂ ਲਹਿਣਾ ਰੱਖਿਆ ਗਿਆ । ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਪਿਤਾ ਫੇਰੂ ਮੱਲ ਜੀ ਵਪਾਰੀ ਸਨ ਤੇ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੀ ਮਾਤਾ ਜੀ ਦਾ ਨਾਂ ਸਭਰਾਈ ਜੀ ਸੀ । ੧੫੩੮ ਈ: ਵਿੱਚ ਗੁਰੂ ਨਾਨਕ ਦੇਵ ਜੀ ਨੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਦੋਵੇਂ ਪੁੱਤਰਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਛੱਡਕੇ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣਾ ਉਤਰਾਧਿਕਾਰੀ ਨਿਯੁਕਤ ਕੀਤਾ ਅਤੇ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦਾ ਨਾਂ ਵੀ ਅੰਗਦ ਰੱਖ ਦਿੱਤਾ । ਗੁਰੂ ਅੰਗਦ ਦੇਵ ਜੀ ਨੇ ਗੁਰਮੁਖੀ ਲਿਪੀ ਬਣਾਈ । ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਲੰਗਰ ਦੀ ਪ੍ਰਥਾ ਜਾਰੀ ਰੱਖੀ ਅਤੇ ਇਸ ਵਿੱਚ ਵਾਧਾ ਕੀਤਾ । ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ ੬੩ ਸਲੋਕਾਂ ਦੀ ਰਚਨਾ ਕੀਤੀ ਜੋ ਗੁਰੂ ਗ੍ਰੰਥ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਵਿੱਚ ਦਰਜ ਹਨ ।
