Harald & Kumar’s Romantic Deal with Khunkar Banana Lady 🍌

■ KATHMANDU, NEPAL: Ever since I did the Himalayan Langtang trek 2 years ago, I've been dreaming of another mountain adventure. Not to copy my Langtang experience, as I consider that to be impossible as so many things went right on that trek despite me doing zero planing and it being my first multi-day trek and first time in the Himalayas, but to find something of equal beauty and novelty.
The thing is that such mountain treks is impossible to discover using Google. You simply cannot get a true feel for what a trek will be like through photos and videos from other people's journeys. You can get an idea, but reality may be nothing like what their hand-picked memories suggests.
So I decided to simply pick a random place and hope for the best. My choice fell on a trail circling the world's 7th tallest mountain: Manaslu. The first time I attempted the Manaslu trek was 6 months ago. I failed before it had even begun as I ran into a troublesome rule which says you need a guide to walk on a simple path hundreds of people walk on everyday! 🤦🏼‍♂️
So I gave up before the trek had actually started.... mainly due to mishaps and human insanity outside of my control. Six months later I have a different plan. I shall journey up towards Manaslu mountain and then head off the beaten path where no permit check-points or insane alcoholic stalker guides exist.
But first I need to get from Kathmandu towards the foothills of the Himalayas. As I suspected, this proved to be quite the adventure in and of itself....mainly thanks to a ruthless but entertaining girl selling bananas on the outskirts of Kathmandu...

Back again with another question for Nepali native speakers. I was told not just by Kumar but by Sunil that Ruthless translates as Khunkar in Nepalese. However some says it actually means Cruel. So what does it actually mean? I recognize this girl selling the bananas as ruthless which is not in and of itself. a negative word. She's driving a hard ruthless bargain. However Cruel is a bad word and I don't think she's cruel at all. So what does Khunkar mean exactly?

The trek is wild and remote, yet there are teahouses at every stage, so trekkers don’t need to bring tents and food, making it more accessible and affordable than similar treks, less crowded in Everest. The scenery provides all Nepal has to offer: you'll trek from the subtropical jungle at lower elevations, through the Himalayan foothills to the high, cold and challenging crossing of the Larkya La above 5,100 meters / 17,000 feet. First drive to Soti khola than Maccha khola to Jagat to than Deng to Namrung to Samagaon to Samdo to Dharamsala to Bimthang to Tilije. It’s one of the prettiest unventured off the beaten track trek.
