■ NEPAL, SYAPRU BESI: The Himalayas, home of Mount Everest, also have many lesser known peaks and mountain plateaus that are far more accessible to the layman trekker. One of these is the Kyankin Ri mountain top, which is accessible by foot if you're willing to walk for the 3 days it takes to hike up there.
Having never done anything other than single day mountain hikes, I felt up for the challenge. But first I needed to get up to the Langtang National Park where the gorge you'll walk through to get to the Langtang mountain range begins.
That meant a grueling 8 hour bus journey on what is surely the worst road I've ever driven on. But when I rocked up at Kathmandu's central bus station at 5AM to board the Himalayan Express Bus I had no idea about the adventure that lay ahead...

Loving this Himalayan adventure so far and I know it's only going to get better once you start the trek. The road didn't seem nearly as bad as when I did that bus ride two years ago, I think they improved it. So many funny moments in this one. You had a "pickle" burrito in the beginning. The pickle is a little side dish which personally I hate and never eat. Not sure why they didn't give you some of the rice and curry there, but pickle isn't a meal by itself. Dhunche was mentioned a few times. That's a town along the way, near the end of the bus ride, when you mentioned that the mountains were in Tibet and Langtang, and the guy said Dhunche and you were wondering if he was referring to a tax. I think he didn't understand you at all and was just saying that the town you were in right then was Dhunche. The "God" meal was awesome. He was saying goat. He also made the sound of a goat. Mutton is actually sheep, but maybe they also call it mutton if it's goat. Mutton would be more expensive than just rice and curry, but still that does seem overpriced. Stoked for episode two when you leave Syabubresi and get up into the mountains. I hope your videos bring some more attention to the incredible Langtang trek, the lodges can certainly use some more business.

I have to give Harald credit here. Unlike many KZbinrs who are well entrenched in the local culture and even language, Harald has just gone out there to wing it. Some of the lack of awareness around small things (like "goat curry" or "god soup"), and his difficulty with understanding the accent, is actually a bit refreshing. Gives you a real perspective from an outsider and a willingness to truly explore a strange, remote place.

I did the Langtang trek in 2017, all around a great experience, especially with all the helpful and friendly Nepali People around! One day I went to the gosainkunda trek and somehow I missed the road leading to the first tea-house, and instead I continued up the mountain. I lost path completely and couldn't even find the way back. Came to the top of a mountain deep in the woods and realised I was lost. Couldn't find a path, the only thing I heard was a river. A mountain river flowing down the alley between the mountain peaks. I was supposed to follow the stream down the mountain, but there was so steep it was impossible. This was during monsoon season but it had not rain those ,24 hours. At last, right before it got dark, I found a big rock that I could sleep under.. writing this is crazy, I didn't think I was going to survive, but the next day I found a small path that lead down to a gathering of tea houses. Hope you are safe man! Nature is great

That brings back memories. I did that bus ride in November 1999. The bus was crammed and I got claustrophia so I joined about 20 other people on the roof luggage rack, with my feet hanging off the end. There were two village choirs returning from a competition, and they sang cheerfully as the bus lurched close to the edges. We did the Langtang trek. Was sad to hear what happened to the high villages in the earthquake.

If it’s Mutton curry that you had, I think that is a reasonable price to pay for a meal. In Kathmandu, a normal meal with mutton costs anywhere around 500-600 Nepali rupees. I am not sure about the price in that part of Nepal, but mutton is one of the most expensive meat sold in the country.

The grass is spring onion, we use it for cooking (to add taste in the main dish, the leafy part is not used, the onion is at the bottom- white colour bulb shape)- quite common in India and Nepal. For more Himalayn adventure you can visit Ladakh, Leh, Spiti in India. Spiti and Ladakh becomes too cold in winters- looks heavenly though. Next time please don't enter rivers without someone watching you over who can save you in case current is too strong. These are glacial rivers and sometimes tourists underestimate the depth and current- there have been many instances of drowing and death.

Yes the leafy parts of spring onion can be used with the purpose of adding flavour actually in Pulses Soup which we said ‘Dal’ in Nepalese language but actually that one green stuffs were selling particularly for the planting purpose to grow onions.

Brother Harald, the ‘GOD Soup’ that you refer to is actually a Goat curry or ‘mutton’ as we call it in Nepal. Your price hike in the meal is because of that mutton curry on top of normal dal-bhat and Rs 400 for dal-bhat and mutton curry is not really a rip-off brother, it’s very reasonable 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼 The green grass on the other hand as few others have explained, are probably spring onions for planting, not for eating raw or cooking. 😊😊😊

Hellow Harald ..its nice to see you back in nepal once again ...thank you for showing our beautiful Nepal through your videos ... The grass was onion ...many people will plant them in their backyard so they can grow their own onion .. I was born in Rasuwa so i have travelled the same road many times ..its one of the most dangerous roads in nepal especially during rainny season ... Sorry that you got charged high price during your lunch ...they do it because you are a foreigner and they asume you dont know the price ...its always best to make some local friends and they will help you when ever you buy something .... Now the more heigher you trek the foods will cost you more ...its same for nepalese people as well ..the reason is due to difficulty to transport food as well as less supply of items there ... They will always prioritise you in buses because they dont want foreigner to miss the bus when they leave .. Please dont go to rivers without a friend ..because currents in those river are very high ..especally up in mountains ...last time i was there in syaprubesi ...there was a natural hot spring bath near there ....i dont know if it still exists ...may be you can ask locals .... Once again thank you Harold for your beautiful videos ..i hope you will have a great time ...be safe ..God bless

Not sure if you will ever read this Harald but you were not really over charged for the meal. Mutton is actually Goat meat and it costs too much in such places in Nepal. Infact chicken curry is also kind of expensive. The normal Dal Bhaat (Rice and Lentils) with veggie costs about 200 nepali rupees (Unlimited Quantity, basically eat till you are done) and if you want non veg then the cost is separate which is why it cost you that much. These new vlogs from Nepal are really good!!

What's wrong in this video? Ok let me explain. For rice & god soup AKA goat soup price RS:450(3.4$) is decent price. It's actually same all over nepal Rs400 to Rs500. The price of Goat meat is Rs1300($11.5) per kg. Interesting miscommunication here is. You can add as much as you want; rice, vegetables,dal ,goat(soup only) but herald told them little bit at first so they served him little portion. Actually; You ate 3spoon or you ate 5 plate at once( one person). It will cost Rs;450. Actually in Pokhara it will cost rs:500. Thank you ❣️. It was not scam it's miscommunication.. Actually;
