Well the new one has the same problem they are total junk. Update on the Harbor Freight pump. The battery compartment started filling with gas and leaking out. Seems like a seal went or the plastic is attacked by gasoline. Bought another to see If I just got a bad one or if it is a common problem. Please leave a comment if you have experienced the same issue as it could be a fire hazard.

I had the transfer pump that screws onto the 5 gallon gas can and it leaked out of the battery compartment. I sent it back and before I sent it back I registered a complaint with the Consumer Product Safety Commission because it is so hazardous. I recommend you do the same so the companies that manufacture these will correct the issue or be outlawed from selling in the United States.

I never checked mine and at about 35 gallons they were still the original batteries. I think gas must have been in there for a while. I am hoping the new one lasts longer and will definitely check it after each use. So far there are 3 with the same problem so it is not just mine. Thanks for watching.

I had 2 leak and gave up on them. Looks like the sealant on mine was attacked by the gasoline. Thesecond one leaked into the battery compartment from the beginning along with where the hose exits. Thanks for watching.

I purchased a liquid transfer pump (have yet to use it) but went with one that actually has a hose for suction and a hose for output with a motorized pump unit in the middle of the hoses. Also the power source is a 12v battery external to the unit, as is the on/off switch external, so no sparks (should - hopefully) be around gas being transferred. From what you said I feel there is considerable danger in using it - one little spark and one would have a great problem!

Hi I follow your videos and have seen each one and have enjoyed them greatly. I bought a pump (very similar) to yours from Northern Tool about 3 years ago. I think I paid around $14 at the time. I later bought a spare for back up just in case. I've been using the original pump (with only battery changes) with no issues winter and summer. I use it for diesel fuel for my sub compact JD. (Probably my original is looking over its shoulder knowing the back up is just waiting and that is what keeps it going.... ;)

Do you rinse it with water after every use as stated on the manual? Seems like most people in the reviews who used it on diesel are happy with it. I plan to use mine on diesel so I really wonder if people really rinse this with water after every use.

Despite looking identical, it's possible there are internal differences in the way various brand units are built. The one I got from Amazon looks just like the HF unit and it is going on 8 years old and still works fine.

After using the Harbor Freight Battery Operated Liquid Transfer Pump (#63847) for a number of months, its operation became erratic, eventually not working at all. But, I found out why and was able to easily correct the problem and get the pump working again. The failure appears to be caused by oxidation of the battery connection points. To correct the problem, grip the pump firmly just below the red battery holder tube. Turn the red plastic tube counterclockwise and remove it completely. Use an abrasive such as emery cloth to shine both the center positive connection and the negative ring. Do the same for the metal tab at the end of the red tube since this makes the negative battery connection to the circular ring that you just cleaned. When finished shining up the metal connections, wipe off the dust. Screw the red tube into the gray pump body. Be careful not to cross thread as you reassemble it. Install two fresh "D" battery cells and try it out. Hopefully it will work again, like mine. Good Luck.

Mine have nothing to do with the batteries. The pumps work but the seal between the pump and battery compartment leaks filling the battery compartment with gas and squirting it all over. The second one also leaks and the serial numbers are not very far apart so l wonder if they had a bad batch. Saving up for a better one because they are very handy. Thanks for watching.

I've noticed that the Chinese import tools and motors I've bought in the past were perfectly engineered to just last long enough for the warrantee to expire. I do my best to avoid them after my experience with a generator, first one expired 2 days before the warrantee expired, they grudgingly replaced it and the second one lasted a week past the expiration date.

Mine worked for a season and is now leaking as described in this video. I suspect that since it is marketed as a $10 item it is not intended to last very long and we should not expect it to do so, especially when using it to transfer gasoline. I guess I need to look for another pump for this purpose.

These pumps have been available in Thailand for years (over 10 years) where we use them to transfer water from 5 gallon tanks and they usually are worthless. The one that are based on a siphon last longer, but you have to keep the gas/water tank higher than where you transfer to. Slow and leaky, not worth the 10 bucks you spend on these.
