I have an old survival knife from the 1980's. It has cheap everything, but it also has a lot of fond memories from a kid trying to do the Rambo thing one summer. Even though they aren't that good they always bring a smile to my face.
@southernmedicine19876 жыл бұрын
The survival knife's tang is only about an inch and a half into the handle and is held in place with a set screw. I took the blade off and cut a notch in it toward the end. I put it back into the handle and tightened the set screw. I then mixed up some Jb Weld and put a layer just above the tang inside the handle. This water proofed the handle and bonded the blade to the handle. I then soldered the set screw in place. It made the $8 knife more durable and solid.

On those survival knives - on the newer ones anyway, those allen set screws work themselves loose. I removed mine and put locktite on it then snugly reseated it. I do wonder what those two holes are for in the finger guard. And yes, most of HF's tools are pretty dull (few exceptions though).

Interesting video SSBA. I enjoy your videos and podcasts. I usually play them when I'm at work, working around the house, or on the road. You always think of the common mans budget in alot of these videos, and bring a different perspective to things I haven't thought about in survival, homesteading, and shtf. You and sippy keep up the good work. From your friendly, northern neighbor (KY). Take care.

I'll agree with you 100% on the tools. Some good though. I got the small fireman's axe and I tell ya, it's been wonderful. I've had to put an edge on it but that's a given. It's got to have a new handle now 'cause I left in a field and it got wet multiple times. As far as the Predator generators, well....they leave something to be desired. If you get one of their generators, get the 1 year replacement guarantee. You Will Need It!!! When I was homeless, I ran the Predator 4000 just about 24/7 and it did crap out. Now, it's not meant for that but when it gave out, I just got a new one out of the box but only with the 1 year replacement warranty. Yes, it's extra money but not that much compared to replacing it about every 3 months. They all have a problem with the throttle on the carb. The plastic assembly does break and they know it's a factory defect. When it breaks, temp solution is a wire bread tie. Take it back.

Couple of H. F. Hints: Look for the Miniature File Set. Should be a Ten Piece Set. Small enough for a couple of Stashes, and I use a couple at work every day. The reason hatchets and axes have a beveled edge, it's designed to bounce off of the tree. To help with the chopping action. Instead of biting into the wood. I did not know this . until I watched a video comparing a metal axe to a stone axe. It became clear very quickly.

Great and interesting videos! Thanks! I got that knife YEARS ago and besides needing to be resharpened, it has held up to this day. Not bad for 8 bucks on sale. Got the machete last year for about 5 bucks and messed up the blade on the first use cutting thick poison vines from the base of some of my trees. It was sharp. Just way to thin and soft right at the edge of the blade. For my application, I should have had the hatchet. For $5 it's still better than nothing to have in a prepper stash. Also glad to hear you have a 4runner. You wouldn't believe what mine has been trough (after 20 years) and just keeps on going every day,

Harbor freight is great and if you get their monthly coupon book in the mail, you can get free batteries, tarps, LCD area flashlights, screwdriver sets or other items for that month. I've gotten plastic .30cal ammo cans (with seal/gasket) for $5.00, .50cal metal cans for $10.00 with seal (both new). One item that I haven't seen in prepper packs is a syphon hose or tube. I carry a 6 foot tube 3/8" in all my packs. I like the soft, flexible and clear hose. I found the hose at Ace Hardward, but you would think that Lowes or Home Depot would carry the hose. Walmart carries the 1/4" X 6 foot for fish tanks. Where you find it, it is cheap!

I just picked up a three pound cross pein hammer and a small 3 pound engineers hammer from harbor freight. I put them to good use this weekend and I am honestly pretty impressed. I had several large pieces of snarled oak trunk that were about 40 inches across I wanted to split. I used the 3#er to seat my wedge before using a large sledge hammer. It held up really well. both of my wedges took the abuse quite well. After about four or five hours of hard use the hammer still looks like new... my steal wedges not so much...

I also paracord wrapped both handles (hatchet and knife). Made for a more comfortable feel. I have much more expensive axes, hatchets, and knives but I now use these as my "every day camping" tools. Don't have to worry about damaging my good tools. Watch out for that saw... broke two of them within minutes of opening the package. Even cheaper hardware store saws are better than those. Peace brother.

Gotta love cheap tool stores lol I've found so many pieces for my bags, plumbers knife and wire saw set for less than 15gbp, similar set on amazon costs over 20gbp the Hultafors plumbers knife is good steel similar shape to Mora and does everything i need, the plumbers wire saw is short (about 14" long) but slices plastics, soft metals and wood easier than a 6" junior hacksaw blade. bought a similar hatchet from Walmart UK (Asda) for about 10gbp and with a little work with lansky puck i can almost shave hairs with it great for feather sticks etc.

And my philosophy on Harbor Freight tools is that I'm still ahead of what a lot of our ancestors used. That guy they found up in the Alps from the late stone age had a COPPER ax. Copper.... All of a sudden that knife doesn't look all that bad LOL Let me put it this way, in the bronze and early iron ages their swords were so soft they'd bend in the middle of a battle. Needless to say this was more than just embarrassing. So as bad as Harbor Frieght tools may be I'm still ahead of the game compared to the old days.

by the way I can definitely vouch for the $89 generator and the $89 welder I actually plug the welder into the generator and that is how I get that little unit to work as long as you take care of it just like everything else it will last I have had the generator for almost 4 years and I have had no problems during that for years my friend has gone through two different Honda generators and a Lincoln welder and he is a certified welder I am just a weekend welder so some of the things at Harbor Freight are definitely well worth it good choice for the beginner prepper or the budget prepper you are 100% correct Sergeant badass

My husband is a Marine out at 29 Palms and I brought my EDC into the room when baby and I went to see him, he said I have the best rape kit he's ever seen. My Expedition is now the Sexpedition and he tells his Marines to blow their rape whistle if they see it on base because he found my rape kit and a blue tarp in the back of the truck. Anyways, I find a ton of great items-high quality for dirt cheap or trade on the OfferUp app. I just picked up a $190 brand new benchmade nimravus fixed blade for my sister for $40 on there, it has the nifty kydex sheath with the safety so your mom/husband/kids can't grab it off you. Harbor freight's lifetime warranty on Hand tools will do you no good after the shtf. Trust me, their tools will break. I was beating a Drum off the back end of an old f-250 and the dead-blow hammer I was using literally blew to pieces. Another time was trying to loosen the tie rod lock nut on an f-150 and instead of loosening the nut, it turned the wrench into a letter "C" After all that, I learned just to get some decent tools, they may cost a little more, but it's better than having a broken tool when you need to get something done.

Impracticool Jack hey like I said some of those tools will break in a heartbeat when you're doing real actual work but just cutting and chopping on some wood I'm sure you'll be alright
@mikedonitt67277 жыл бұрын
stick with their pro line of tools if ur doing semi often heavy work they will work well I've had ratchets and wrenches I've put 3 foot cheater bars on. their breaker bars at a good quality little deflection with 100% return. I've ran there 3/8ths and half inch cvjointed adapters at 220 and 1100 foot lbs respectively sprung one at 1400 ftlbs. I do a huge amount of scrapping and tearing down old rigs that's sat for 30 and 40 years can stress the best tools but harbor freights pro line stands up better then some of the craftsman as well as some of the snap on or macks u just have to watch what u get. in fact I have a 3/8 inch breaker bar that has less deflection then snap ons 1/2 inch and the harbor freight 3/8 drive breaker bar has about an inch and a half longer reach at the hold point. and Napa's evercraft line sucks compared to HF pro line of tools for almost 3 times the money. I've had more problems with people loosing my tools or out and stealing them so I buy cheap quality tools. I haven't bought any of the flex head ratchets or any of their 3/4 drive stuff and stay away from their pliers and watch the screwdrivers there is one set that I bout cause it had a steel endcap which Ive used a two lb hammer on to reset a stripped Phillip's head screw tip held no broken handle no bent shaft screw came out with putting a wrench to the shaft. this is the green clear handled square shaft set I've hammered the hell out of them.

Your problem wasn't the tools, it was the fact you were actually trying to work on a Ford

I want an anvil, they have one my size for 65 bucks. I think if I get it and cook it for a few hours in the oven it might be just fine.

Wes S I need one too I keep using this railroad plate
@willholly18446 жыл бұрын
Step One survival Your steel RR plate's better than an iron HF anvil. Don't bother w/ it unless you plan on putting a steel face on it somehow. Weld a steel plate on the strike surface or weld a steel face on & then machine flat again.

well that might be the only good thing about living in Henderson Nevada is there is a harbor freight every few miles. lol.. actually there is everything every few miles I was surprised to see how many multiples of the same stores are only within a few miles definitely would not need a vehicle but currently right now I think I'm too lazy to walk I did enough walking jogging and running in the military for five people

Great video people scoff at budget gear but if you have a little knowledge and experience you can get som wonderful items at car boots jumble sales yard sales. I tend to go for the older items if its lasted this long should last a bit longer all it needs is tlc .I also use Internet from trusted sellers for clearence items but it does take a bit of faith and time to build a rapport with them. May I say the knife looks a bargain trouble is licensing and laws in the UK about whom can sell items makes it a tad harder to get bargains.

I had that same harbor freight machete, and now I knew better when I bought it, but on the first day the handle cracked and the edge rolled over in 2 places that were like an inch long haha its terrible, harbor freight does have some really decent affordable tools but some tools you just know not to buy there
