Outstanding review!!!! Cutting away that jack stand so that we could see a inside view was very generous! I love the new design however I always have a backup to my jack stands, sometimes a big block of wood! LOL Just to reassure me when I am under the vehicle.

My logic in wanting these particular stands is that HF presumably lost millions of dollars issuing all those refunds/getting bad press/etc. under the recall. I highly doubt they want to go through that again, and thus now have some of the most well thought out and robust stands currently available on the market. I’ll be buying 4 of these tomorrow

Thanks for posting this. I had heard about the recall, but hadn't yet done anything about my old HF jack stands (which were on the optional recall list). Yesterday I returned them to the store and picked up these guys. It was an extra $10/set, which seems reasonable given the considerable upgrade.

Great explanation and great cross cut view of how the jack stand works. I actually had a old HF stand disengage on me when my sons car was up on four stands. I bumped the lever ever so gently with my foot and the pawl disengaged. The car was then balanced on three stands. My wife saw it too. It can happen ! Hard to believe until you’ve seen it or have had it happened to you. Anyway, these new jack stands from Harbor freight are the Way to go now.

I really like these! I may have to go get them. I honestly think the set I have still been using is the recalled ones 🤣 What's nice about that lock key stoping the arm from lifting and releasing is you can carry the stand around with them set at the height you always use without them collapsing when you set them down or the saddle lifting up if you grab them by it. I have pinched my fingers in them when I move them because the saddle slides shut when you bump the arm while carrying them. I know there is a little lock tab you're supposed to knock in when you assemble them but I do NOT because I like that they come apart. I've been known to used the saddle/rachet part in my press.

I have this style stand in Australia but the handle attached to the claw has a shear pin through the centre of the handles round bar that shears off if to much upwards pressure is applied to the handle while under load leaving the claw in its holding position and the handle spin free , a great design as i did break one pin but no failure of the stand at all , The safety features on those look very reliable i would definitely purchase them.

If they would have made these like that to begin with, I would already own them. Unfortunately when they made the first bad design, I took mine back and bought some from auto zone that will probably be all I ever need. At least they are making them right, now.

I thought the only real issue with the old stands was that the pawl didn't have 100% engagement with the ratchet and thus could fall if the vehicle shifted, but otherwise they were decent stands. HF really went overboard with the engineering on these replacements from the embarrassment of the recall.

Was that stand that you cut away a hf stand ? Because that is not how the old stands worked. They had the teeth jamming against a cam, not a tooth. I looked at a few older ones including mine and no tooth was engaging. Looked to me like either a terrible design or incorrect installation. Either way, they got it right this time. And yes, as a long time mechanic, all stands had teeth engaging teeth.

Great review! However, bumping the handle while working under the car is very easy to do and there are other videos showing just how easy the old HF stands fail. Think about someone with a pry tool or swinging a hammer accidentally hitting the arm. The original HF Jack stands only required about 1/16" to 1/8" of movement before the jack would fall unlike the new one with much more defined teeth and safety pin. I cringed and felt sick when I thought about how many times I've put my life in jeopardy through the years with my old HF jack stands.

The pictures I seen of the really bad ones that were part of the recall hardly had any teeth. There are also KZbin videos showing some that have about half the thickness of the teeth that they should have. I'm guessing the molds for the ratchet arm were too badly degraded and they should of been discarded. Personally I cringe thinking someone wouldn't of questioned them and used them anyhow. Had I seen a jack stand like that I would of never used it. All of that being said, this is also no excuse for the manufacturer. After the recall there were jacks that split due to faulty welds, Harbor Freight recalled them as well, later to find out those hacks had just been misused and overloaded. Sadly there are other companies that sold the very same jack under their name and never recalled them.

Does anyone know what the failure mode was on the recalled jackstands and what the cause was? Were the tolerances too great, allowing the ratchet arm to slide down off the teeth and pawl, or was there a material failure in the teeth which broke off? Just curious, I have a set of Jackstands from Harbor Freight, which aren't part of the recall... and would like to be able to inspect them each time I use them...
@1D10CRACY
@1D10CRACY 3 жыл бұрын
The teeth on the ratchet arm were too shallow, the manufacturer had been making jacks for lots of companies and the casting dies had worn out and were out of spec. They were visually alarming and both you and I probably would of never used the stands and took them back. People started testing other models after the recall and one fellow managed to overload his jack stand and split one of the welds on the side of the stand, so harbor freight did a larger recall to get them off the market. Other brands had similar recalls, they just didn't go as pubic as Harbor Freight did.

Personally I trust nobody. But I am capable of looking at a jack stand and making an educated guess on whether or not it is built right. If you are buying a jack stand based on the brand name, you probably should rethink your plan. Most Jack stands are made in the same factory and just have different brands stamped on them.
@jeffro221

Because they have redesigned them and they are now excellent compared to all the other chinese made stands. You can buy superior USA made stands from U.S. Jack, but you'll pay a LOT more. I trust these and I always have a backup method of support by adding a screw jack.
