I'm a mom who has always been interested in woodworking. Anyway, I knew absolutely nothing and taught myself how to set it up and did some test cuts. I had some successes and failures. I experienced a lot of frustration learning before I watched this video. My wrenches are frustrating but I think they work. It's like the collet has different widths from different angles. If I turn it, I can get the wrenches to fit. It's just kind of random. I also experienced the bit slipping, and when it did, it damaged the project as well as a little cheap kitchen table that doubles as a work table that I drag outside. My fault for using my table. I just have nowhere to store a work table. Also my fault for not securely and I mean SECURELY tightening the bit. I kept thinking the plastic thing needed tightening, but I now believe it was the bit. I am learning about how to hold the router. That is so confusing to me. I learned about direction the hard way, but I still struggle with which direction to hold the thing. My husband is so busy at work I hate to bother him. This video helped me. I think it's a great tool considering the price. I made a beautiful Roman ogee edge. I just need to learn how to use it. Thank you!

For the spindle wrenches, I just got a cheap set of metric combo wrenches from HF and they were thin enough to fit the spindle. I agree, you get what you pay for. Mine also had too much overmolding inside that blocked air flow and the motor and front bearing to get very hot, to the point the spindle was untouchable after a short run. I trimmed the plastic away and now it runs cool. Also I use a speed control because the high speed sometimes burns the cutter.

@@DanPonjican The problem, not with the router. It was made as a laminate trim router, not a general purpose. Every cut you made was a climb cut, and with a larger bit, a more powerful router, you'd have the router jerked out of your hands and chewing on your leg. Or using it on hardwood, almost all hardwoods would have taken it away and thrown it at you. I've had one for maybe ten years and no problems that I can't live with or correct.

I got one of these recently, and I agree that the base is... suboptimal. As a serious woodworker's primary router, this tool would be frustrating to use. But this isn't a proper router, and it's not advertised as a proper router. It's a trim router with a bunch of extra toy/junk accessories which most professional woodworkers will toss in the garbage. Since it does what it's supposed to and costs peanuts, how can it NOT be worth the $$? For anyone, any skill level or production volume, it can be nice to have multiple trim routers setup with specific bits, for edge work or trimming laminate.... things for which the height does not need to be changed once it is set. It could be useful for anyone building a CNC mill/router or slot mortiser. It could be useful in a router table with a DIY mount. It could be useful as a stubby electric die grinder/dremel. And it costs less than a Dremel tool.

The collet loosening from the bit is fairly common with these routers. I had one given to me and had the same results, minus the bit sticking into the wall. After a little looking around the web, I've found that it's hit or miss on many of the similarly designed trim routers. The bad collet is the #1 complaint I've found, along with the piss poor base design. I'll break my router down and find another use for the motor, but I won't use a tool I can't count on.

A decent router is going to cost you $65 (refurbished) to $100 or more (best one on the market now seems to be the Bosch Cobalt Palm router). While I would love to get one, I don't have that kind of cash to drop. Even used routers I have seen, that are in fair - almost falling apart - condition I am finding for $40-$50 (almost bought one yesterday from a Pawn Shop). Looking on eBay... the same router (pretty much, just orange) from China costs $40 and you have to wait a month to get it. I have been researching this for at least a month, or better, trying to find the best bang for my buck. I think you are expecting too much out of this tool. For the price, you can't. It's the same with most of HF's power tools (often the cheapest name brand competitor tool, at twice the cost, will still be slightly better than their tools... I have a Ryobi scroll saw that is testament to that, compared to the two HF scroll saws I killed over 2 years of moderate use). You get what you pay for and sometimes it works better than expected for half the cost of name brand tools. If you don't have the time to experiment, then spend more money for a better tool.

Thanks for your comments. Valid points but as I mentioned in another comment reply, value is relative to each user. For me, the value isn't here. I would much rather spent he extra cash for a better tool in this category. Maybe not true for you, but for me it certainly is. Everyone is different and has different constraints and perspectives. This video was mine. Thanks.

It's not a good advert for Kreg. That clamp was pathetic. Probably needed adjusting, you didn't do it any favours by not sorting it. The HF trimmer is pretty awful. Have a look at Katsu laminator/trimmer. About $33. Its a Chinese copy of a Makita. Very good. Do a review of that, it will surprise you. The quality is much better than the HF tool.

Judging from the video, the tool worked fine.., but a BIG FAIL, because you assume that it will not last long?!? LOL

Next time watch the whole video Krazy. I talk about much more what I feel makes this tool a "fail" other than the perceived quality.

You get what you pay for......Pay $150.00 (Hundred and Fifty) and I bet you will get one that meets your standards.

I bought it to test it for myself bud. Not sure what good watching other videos of other opinions would have done. "I don't know how to read"? Coming from someone who can't hardly write. Lol

Everything you buy from Harbor Freight eventually becomes a hammer. Thanks for your sacrifice and my edification. Looking elsewhere.
