In this video, I set up my Harbor Freight Dust Collection system to exhaust outside. I have my dust separator already set up so I just needed to free up some space by getting rid of the unit and storing it in a closet, which is awesome because there is a lot less noise.

Harbor Freight Dust Collector info:
"This 2 HP dust collector delivers powerful dust collection exactly where you need it. With 1550 CFM airflow this portable dust collector is more effective than many big stationary units. The upper filter bag screens out particles as small as 5 microns - 1/10 the diameter of a human hair. The lower collection bag is translucent so you can see at a glance when it's time to empty. Four locking swivel casters let you position this dust management system next to the machine you're using.

Nice job. i did something similar. My only difference is i skipped the can completely and got a dryer ven that directs downward. It blows all the chips and sawdust into a garbage can outside can.

Great video and setup Austin . I popped over from the woodworking FB group after seeing your video share this morning. I am getting ready to hook up some DC too in my shop, but more of the shop vac and cyclone style. Homemade cyclone of course LOL *clicked the bell BTW*

Awesome! I always wondered if people actually watched from those groups. haha. I think I'm going to get myself some shop vac accessories and reduce down to it at the end of the line or something. I like the size of the hose and it would work better for sanding and such. Homemade cyclone of course. Those things aren't cheap. Thanks for the sub, I'm heading over to your channel right after this to check it out!

Keep in mind that by the exhausting to the outside, you are sucking any heated or cooled air out of your shop. You would do better to put filters inside the shop to recycle the shop air back into the shop.

Hey man - great video. Any complaints from the neighbors yet? I'm considering doing the same thing.

Great idea - over the course of distance, do you lose any suction? Also, why did you choose to put it on the opposite side of your shop than where the collector was stored?

Thanks! You do lose a little suction I would say, but worth it to me. There is a closet on that side so I could put it there to reduce the noise and also there is a walkway there so I couldn’t cross the pathway with the pipe. Idk if that makes sense.

The reason people say you shouldn't exhaust outside is because of the negative pressure in your shop. You're pulling air out of your shop and venting it outside. That air has to be replaced somehow, pulled from the rest of your house or outside. If your air is conditioned (heated or cooled), then you are sucking all that conditioned air out and increasing your energy cost. Imagine a 12'x12'x8' shop...it has 1,152 cubic feet of air. If your dust collector is drawing 400 cfm, all the air in your shop has to be replaced every three minutes. I'm not an expert and would like to vent outside also, but from what I read, it's not a good idea.

Alan Questell Absolutely a good point. I did read up on that a bit as well. I think what I will end up doing is setting it up a bit like April Wilkerson where she can switch from inside to outside exhaust. Obviously I’ll have to set up a filter for the inside. To be able to switch outside would be fine during mild weather days, but I know if it’s summer in Texas (where I am from) and I suck all the cool air outside, I may as well go inside for the rest of the afternoon. Thanks for your comment, I should have addressed that in the video.

Just wondering how much hard pipe you needed to purchase? I have a small shop in 3rd car portion of my garage and am looking for a good solution for the dust that accumulates with each project. Do you know of anyone that used heat to bend the pipe where needed instead of using 45° elbows? I already have the HF collector.

I bought 5 lengths of 10 foot pipe. I had one left over and a bunch of scrap. You could probably get away with 3 or 4 if you are exhausting on near where you are collecting. I haven't seen anyone heat up such large pipe, but I know it could be done. That would be a really cool technique.

I may have to try it and video the process if it's successful.
