I developed a dislike of most of the passengers, except maybe Jethro, so I had a tougher time investing in these characters. The first time I saw this episode, I would have been almost happy with most of them dying...I liked the development of the characters early on and grew to like them, but most became somewhat to very unlikable by the end. I've grown to appreciate the episode more over the years, but it can't be S tier for me. I'm glad we can all have different opinions in the Harbo Wholmes channel, though.🙂

Being a retail worker this hit hard and real for me, everyone treats customer service workers of any kind as inhuman robots, without a real human being with friends, family, loves, fears, a need for sleep and food and toilet breaks etc.... Everything about this episode just captured human nature and how scary it often is so perfectly, combined with brilliant acting from everyone involved it really is a masterpiece!

@@watsername I feel the same. Before the pandemic hit I was a waitress. I wear a name badge at work and I genuinely like it when people use my name. like I am not just some soulless robot who serves food and cleans tables. I am a human being. A lot of the time people don't care. They don't want to know my name or take the time to read my badge. To them I am a subordinate. Just there to serve them food and drinks. It is kind of rude. Like I am not just here to serve you food. There are about 20 other things I would rather be doing But I still got out of bed and came to work and I am working hard to give you good service the least you can do is show the basics of human decency and read my badge and use my actual name.

Russell T. Davies is clearly a student of Rod Serling's work in order to write this powerful "Twilight Zone"-like story where the Doctor faces the greatest monster of all -- human nature. It's an ironic twist that Skye's despondency allows the entity access to her body, while the hostess's sacrifice cheats the entity of its victory and gives Skye what she wanted -- her death.

I always remember how chilling it was to see The Doctor overtaken by the entity but not fully enough so that he's unaware of what's going on - the fear in his eyes as he's dragged towards the door and unable to prevent his imminent death, and the relief in those same eyes when he catches his foot and cheek on a chair just by chance; the scene doesn't just weaponise fear, it philosophises it
@luke8801
@luke8801 3 жыл бұрын
It’s also like you can see his life flashing before his eyes - he’s had ten faces, lived for over 900 years, destroyed Skaro, sent the Daleks and Cybermen back to the void, faced Zygons, Sontarans, Silurians, Weeping Angels, Vashta Nerada, he won the fucking Time War, but was almost killed by a few humans.

It also actually makes sense the hostess would be the one to figure it out, their job is to read people and understand them. Her subconsciously taking in that *Alonzy* line and then realizing it's significance when another person who had no connection to the doctor prior to this meeting and with no context for that line as well as never having saying it before makes perfect sense.

I think one of my favourite things about this episode is how it shows the Doctor interacting with people when he doesn't have a companion. It was a big thing about the 10th Doctor, him being lonely and not knowing what to do without someone. It shows how when the Doctor doesn't have someone to bridge the gap between strangers and himself he becomes even more alienated than usual.

this episode really hits hard rewatching it as a neurodivergent adult specifically because of the fear of trying to reason with angry people who will take any sign of 'unusual behaviour' to turn it against me or to imply that im a freak or theres something wrong with me (eg moving in a certain way, or not having 'the right' facial expression, or finding it difficult to talk. hell, repeating things (echolalia) is a common autistic trait). i can absolutely see myself getting overwhelmed in public and then getting yelled at by someone who looks like jethro's dad, and then not being able to do anything because of not being able to talk properly (im not non verbal, its just hard to talk when overwhelmed). unlike almost every other situation in doctor who, this is scary because its something that can (and probably will, and kinda has) happen to me irl

I feel for you. I am not autistic but I really don't cope well with conflict at all.This probably sounds goofy but I remember an episode of Brady Bunch (showing my age LOL) when the eldest girl (?Marcia, I think) was terrified of going for her car licence. Someone suggested "imagining them in their underwear, it makes everyone more "human" and less fearful". It worked and she got over her fears and got her licence. Dunno if it will help you. I have sort of done it a few times when stressed...nearly giggled myself into hiccups once! However, on a more serious note: Don't be shy about seeking help if you need it. There are many people/organisations who might be able to suggest coping mechanisms for you. Keep strong. Boofy

One theory regarding the Entity that I came across somewhere (I wish I could remember where so that I could credit it but this was a while ago and I just saw it in passing) that I think is an interesting way of interpreting the episode is that the Entity itself was neither originally good nor bad in its intentions - its only initial goal being to learn in the only way it knew how - and its eventual malevolence was entirely influenced by everyone's fear of it. A sort of Frankenstein's Creature "since everyone treats me as evil, I guess I must be evil" situation. It absorbs the information via the character's voices that they believe it to be a threat to be destroyed so it essentially fulfils that role because it literally doesn't know any better. I don't know whether I personally entirely believe that theory or not, but it's certainly a new way of looking at the episode and again raises some further interesting ideas about the nature of mob paranoia.

I was a medic in the USAF for 5 years. When I deployed, the convoy I went on was with a unit that had been hit hard a month or so back, when the medics we'd replaced had still been there. One of the drivers came right up to me and, somewhat aggressively, asked, "Are you going to freeze?" When I asked what she meant she pointed to the clamshell we were standing in front of, at the names above the entrance, "___ was my best friend. When we were hit, the medic just stood there, frozen. They didn't even do anything they were so scared." Now I know a bit more about the incident, I know there was nothing that medic could have done to save her friend, but that medic also had absolutely no way of knowing that. They should have done more, but were unable to in the moment. I eventually told that driver that I had no idea if I would freeze or not, but that she (and anyone else) had my full permission to slap tf out of me if I did to get me out of it. Unfortunately my own moment to do my job would come, and like the medic who came before me I wouldn't be able to do anything for the person, and I will also evaluate how I handled that moment for the rest of my life, but I didn't physically freeze. My body went on autopilot in a way it never had before, even with me having worked ambulance in some pretty fucked up situations state side, and I'm grateful every single day I trusted my training. Even with all of that though, I've never since criticized that other medic for freezing. Because I think we all panic and "freeze," it just presents differently with all of us. You never know who you're going to be in moments like that. And yet it's so hard not to judge how everyone else acts in those moments.

The scariest moment in the entirety of DW for me is when in Midnight Rose appears for a second on the screen behid the Doctor that no one notices but you as the viewer does, and it seems even more impossible than anything else in this impossible episode, plus it is even more unexpected than anything else in the episode, it is scary and worrying and NO ONE SEES IT, for me seeing this beloved character is just like when you see the ghost or monster behind the main character in a horror and I think it’s sooo genious to turn someone you love into something you fear with the atmosphere of the episode!! I really hope you will talk about this in the video, i haven’t finished it yet.

This is a brilliant psychological study; I've read other comments that mention Classic Who's Edge of Destruction, which is set entirely in the Tardis control room and involves the slow disintegration of the crew's morale and team spirit. This, however, is on a whole new level. I must have watched it oh, a dozen times; of course I'll never feel exactly the same way as I did the first time, when I didn't know what was going to happen, but it's still gripping. I think it won an award, and, if it didn't, it should have.

i think the scariest thing about this episode to me is the fact that A) the doctor had no idea what the creature was, B) it was strong enough to psychically overpower the mind of the doctor, a _time lord_ ,and C) the creature has never ever been explained or mentioned ever again

One of the best DW episodes ever, and overall just amazing TV everyone should watch at least once. Its kinda weird though, I've watched this episode with a few people and they really just don't seem to get it. They come away either thinking Sky went mad, or that the episode is boring, or that its just "humans are bad?" or something. Its so disheartening to see such a complex episode with layers get kinda misread like that.

I said this on the older video on this episode, but Midnight and The Wild Blue Yonder are in my opinion the scariest episodes of Doctor Who ever. For one, both feature David Tenants Doctor, giving us a familiar character to deal with. We never really know more about the “Monster of the Week” outside of the basic; it’s true form is unknown, it’s smart (impossibly so), and mimics humans to be able to try and get in to our society for unknown purposes. The Doctor is completely alone in terms of where to go and who to rely on (In Midnight he only has a group of scared humans who will turn on him in a moment and WBY Donna is in even more danger than the Doctor in a way) and he knows the exact same things we do. In short, these two episodes are perfect and terrifying because we and the Doctor are in the same boat, we have no idea what we are facing, and it is getting smarter and smarter every second we try and figure out what it is.

This is the scariest episode in all of Doctor Who because he is completely powerless. The Oncoming Storm, the man who won the Time War, the Destroyer of Worlds, brought to his knees, paralysed and unable to do anything. But we all know that if Donna was there the whole thing would have been much easier, and the entity wouldn't be able to keep up with her yapping

I've always wondered how other incarnations would have handled this situation. Perhaps 11 would be more empathetic and despite being more alien than 10 come across as someone to be trusted as he seems to be much better at calming situations and soothing those who are scared, would 5 be overwhelmed by the loud abrasive personalities of the passengers and suffer the same fate as 10 if not worse due to him not having catchphrases like Allons-y? Would a more authoritative incarnation like 4 be able to do what 10 attempted to do but with more successful results? And then there's 3 who would have just karate chopped Biff and been done with it while 13 on the other hand would probably bumble around say that she loves buses and loves this and that then stumble through the door and get burnt to a cinder.

This episode does one of my favourite things in storytelling: Create a rule establishing an impossibilty, solely for the purpose of breaking the rule... Establishing that nothing can survive the xtonic rays, purely for the purpose of having something survive them... It's instantly horrifying. It's also crazy to think that if the Doctor was thrown from the vehicle, he presumably wouldn't have been able to regenerate; he would have died over and over until he was out of regenerations. This was the most peril he's ever been in, and it was at the hands of a bunch of terrified tourists.

Watching this it just occured to me how awesome it would be to have Jethro come back for another episode, especially now the doctor has obviously regenerated, so the Doctor who recognise Jethro but he wouldn't recognise the doctor at first. And Colin Morgan is such a phanominal actor he could really do a lot with the character years on, with how this experience affected him and the course of his life, and I love when doctor who refers back and looks at the aftermath of previous adventures.

Speaking of the last line i just listened to Cybermen 1 and 2. The last of which is extinction. This the the feeling is reversed. The line is « there is nothing to fear » at the start it is the cybermen saying it and it is obviously scary but then at the end when it’s said for the last time it is hopeful. Or it’s supposed to be. But because of the fear before it’s actually quite chilling.

The whole "jumping on the bandwagon" thing reminds me of something I read a while ago: Someone was basically asked, "If you saw all your friends jump off a bridge, you wouldn't just jump after them, right?" - to which he responded, "What's more likely, that all my friends that I've known to be fairly rational people _all_ suddenly went insane, or that there's something dangerously wrong with the bridge?" We have evolved in relatively small groups (~150 people) for a huge part of our history, groups small enough for us to know everyone "enough" to rely on their judgement (and know the exceptions whom we shouldn't just trust). That "environment" has changed a lot in recent history, but our evolved instincts and thought patterns still kick in - when we're in a "non-hostile" group, we automatically trust them to _some_ degree, no matter whether we _actually_ know the individuals well enough. We project that "my tribe has earned my trust" onto that group of people that isn't attacking us, since they're more like "our" tribe than any other.
