HARD Boeing 747 LANDING - TNT Boeing 747 hammering on the RUNWAY

This TNT Boeing 747 made a very hard landing at Düsseldorf yesterday which caused lots of smoke during touchdown. TNT operated a flight for Emirates Sky Cargo on the routing Dubai - Düsseldorf - Frankfurt. This Boeing 747 was flying for Emirates for over a year, in the meantime it` s back flying cargo around the world for TNT. I have seen a few hard landings during my planespotting trips but this one was very intense.
Meanwhile the company TNT doesn` t exist anymore. It used to be a parcel comapny but now it got taken over by ASL Airlines Ireland, together with Fedex. TNT was a perfect edition for the european network of Fedex.

Note the crosswind. This landing didn't look that rough under the circumstances. The 747 can take it. If a tire or two had blown, I'd call it a hard landing.

That is a normal and perfect landing. For non-pilots it may look as hard, but even for an experienced pilot it is not always possible to touch down as in a velvet cushion. We are talking about a 300-400 ton aircraft, landing at around 250-300 km/h, add cross winds to that and you have that nice landing.

When landing with heavy crosswinds its always best to make good positive contact. Trying to land very soft can lead to pretty dangerous drifting.

You can see by the use of the rudder and where the aircraft was facing prior to touchdown that there were crosswinds during landing, a positive landing is the best way to not let the crosswind take you out of the runway centerline

This was Runway 05R West- East- Wind comes from East East South.Airport at the right. It`s not normal, that a 747Cargo Jet lands in Duesseldorf. The Main Cargo Airport for Northrine Westfalia was Cologne. In Duesseldorf: The 1first Runnaway South 05R (West) and 23L (East) was cirka 3 km long and 45,1meters wide. The 2nd Runnaway North 05L (West) and 23R (East) was 2,6 km long and 45,1 meters wide. The second Runaway was mostly used at 5 PM . Thank you for reading!

That was a beautiful landing. It is a crosswind landing and he needed to get the plane down before the wind blew it off the runway, and then he would have to abort the landing.

There was a flare. You can see on the second version that his flair starts well behind the camera, and what you're seeing on the telephoto is the very end of the flair. Notice the nose is up, and you're looking at the bottom of the stabilizer, meaning it's being pulled back in a flair. It's only the telephoto lens and the very end that makes it look like a carrier landing.

The problem with the 747s, they require longer runways for taking off and landing. To compensate for the shorter runways on landing, you have to bring the bird down faster which means you have to sometimes land harder than wanted.

The landing style depends a lot on traffic situations on the airport. If there are a lot of planes in landing a fast and sometimes hard landing is necessary to clear the runway fast. Its not about the pilot its just different styles for different situations.

right. cargo loads sometimes exceed double the weight of passengers. i believe a fully loaded md11 cargo plane carries cargo weight comparable to 900 passengers.

I had the pleasure of riding in a 747-400 that had a HARD landing at LAX. We were coming in kinda hot and still descending. The pilot must have misjudged the altitude, because he hadn't even started to flare when it felt like the runway came up and hit us. The plane bounced and the overhead bins popped open. The video monitor for my section, which had been showing nothing but static all the way from Japan to LAX started working. A tough plane. I don't think an Airbus would have fared so well.

I flew 727 freighters and the landings were no different nor were we trained to perform them differently than on passenger flights.Pilots know darn well that hard landings are detrimental to the structure of an aircraft and would not purposely make a hard landing under normal conditions.Besides, hard landings area blow to a pilots ego ;)
