A tethering line for the hard hat is good for when working at heights, it eliminates the issue of your helmet becoming a drop object for persons working on GL. But, it does not replace a chin strap. A chin strap is used to keep the helmet from leaving your head. In the event that you are falling, the chinstrap keeps the helmet in place, but the tether would not. Yes, they are extremely uncomfortable, but there are models that use a molded cushion to fit your chin.
