I loved it when you said there is no set build for hard mode, after 100 hours on this game, I realized there is no ultimate set, and the most efficient way to go through hardmode is experimenting at all times to find the best setups for areas, then the best setup for the boss of that area etc, all the while finding a combination of materia that helps you not waste MP... this game is about thinking, experimenting, and adapting to the different enemies!

You have to try Aerith with the Gotterdammerung necklace. Her Planet Protection limit break trivializes every fight in the game. It's so OP. If you have First Strike equipped and then a magnify- barrier combo, you can start the fight with Aerith's Planet Protection limit break and a manawall up. If you time the uses properly in each fight, your whole team will be immune to physical damage and magic damage will be halved for the whole fight.

I would say instead of Chakra, use Pray instead as it heals all party members, to get multiple ones to equip to all your party members replay "Doneos secret stash" side quest to get more, you'll only need to replay it 3 times as Aerith is already equipped with one

Remember! In Hard mode you will HAVE to constantly change your builds up to fit enemy weaknesses. That is fine! This build overall is good but feel free to switch it up to suit your playstyle as well!

Have you tried prayer as a healing option instead of chakra? It's full party and does not scale to damage taken. It's 2 atb bars, sure, but it's also a group heal.

Hard mode in this game is amazing, in Normal mode you don't even change materia that often because just about anything works. I love the feeling of finding the build that takes down each boss. and using skills that I mostly ignored like chi trap on Tifa or Steelskin on Barret really show off how great the combat system works.

Best combo on mage: mp absorb + fire (or other) along with magnify + fire (same other). This way you can AOE and mp absorb from all enemies you hit!! Combine with arcane ward and it's super OP. unlimited mana

my go-to build for most normal encounters is enemy skill paired with HP absorb, Weapon: elemental paired with fire (if vs weak to fire) and hp absorb paired with the same elemental spell paired with the elemental materia. Equip The scarf + first strike materia to have 2 ATB right of the bat of a fight and cast the enemy skill siphon and watch your hp regen like crazy while dealing damage. All of this cost 0 mp. You can even go for the alguid aura (ice aura/damae not affected by elemental materia)

Love the vids man, keep it up! This damn game keeps pulling me back even after the platinum. There’s so many different ways to play it and no other game has been able to scratch that itch for me after completing it. If there’s someone out there like myself looking to replay the game in a more challenging way I recommend going through it on hard mode all the way with your starter weapons and not upgrading any slots that boost your attack/magic power and defense/magic defense. I’m also not equipping any armor/accessories that boost any of the aforementioned stats significantly , i.e geometric bracelets for extra materia slots.

This setup is really good! The only times I had to change to a different build in Hard Mode was with Hell House and Rufus, and I destroyed all the other bosses on my first or second try. I even beat the Harbinger and Sephiroth on my first try with it. One of my proudest platinums to date. Thank you for the quides that helped me along the way!

Great guide as usual! One thing I would add is to break open Shinra boxes to recover MP, save, reload, and break them open again until needed. In my entire hard mode playthrough I was never even close to running out of MP because of this (except, of course, in some of the boss battles, especially during the last two chapters). I suggest maxing out your materia and using the "Gotterdammerung" accessory (from beating Pride and Joy) for hard mode. It helps SO much, even with bosses! (along with Steadfast Block and First Strike). Most mob fights were over as soon as they started, and I rarely had to heal. For example, I remember that Swordipede mini-boss from Ch. 17 kicking my ass on normal mode. On hard mode with that accessory, Swordipede didn't even stand a chance! Cloud and Tifa pretty much finished it off with their two limit breaks!

My only advice before starting your hard mode: Beat Pride and Joy before starting your hard mode playthrough, and abuse your enimeis with Gotterdammerung and ascension limit break. Thanks for the video bro I really enjoy your contents keep it up 🙏🏼

I did this, fought the Scorpion Sentinel with it and felt so unfair. I did use Ascension to clear rooms on the way out of the reactor, that was fun but I never equipped it for the rest of the run after that. It's like using Knights of the Round, makes every fight way too damn easy. I just beat Emerald and Ruby Weapon in the original for my first time ever in my life because of Knights of the Round, Gotterdammerung is the same concept to me for this game. It's a whole lot of fun but it makes a lot of fights way too easy.

I’d only suggest that you don’t need both cure and chakra. Depending on how you can manage MP and progress through hard mode cure usually works out better as you can apply it to any character at the cost of 1 atb bar and even pair it with magnify instead of using chakra to heal all 3 for the cost of one bar. But it’s true, there isn’t one loadout you can use to rock the entire game as it is best to change it up accordingly. Fury rings can help make quick work of many enemies but you risk taking more damage as well so a lot depends on your play style as well.

Yup! Balancing your MP is the key to hard mode. Chakra alone is just fine but if needed the healing materia can help out a teammate with no ATB who is getting shredded by enemies haha

Agreed, I never use Chakra. I would just make sure that I'd heal with my non-combat healer outside of combat, or the person I wasn't using as a mage because their MP wasn't as precious, like Tifa, for example. Regen/Magnify helps a ton for harder boss fights, then just have your non-main healer top people off at the end of every fight. That being said, I cannot tell you how many times I'd heal everyone then ROUND A CORNER TO FIND A BENCH I FORGOT ABOUT and wasted that MP for nothing. Oh well, only three bosses that killed me were Eligor because of his bullshit Reflectga, Rufus, and Sephiroth. Hell, I died more to random encounters in Normal Mode when I was awful at the game, some of them can really sneak up on you if you aren't ready.

My go to was: everyone - one MP and HP plus, steadfast block (except for Aerith) Cloud - Buster sword if Aerith is in the party, Mythril saber if she's not (he also got all of Aerith's blue materia), chain bangle, champion belt. First strike, elemental materia on weapon linked to an element, parry, pray, cure. Tifa - Feathered gloves, force bracelet, transference module. All of the atb increasing materia, parry, chakra, pray, elemental and one element materia Barret - Big bertha, force bracelet, enchanted ring. Haste, cure, revive, chakra, whatever else the situation called for. Aerith - Silver staff, force bracelet, circlet. Two of the same element, one linked to MP absorption materia and the other to magnify, one other element, 2 magic plus, first strike. I had to change these only on Hell house (aerith got all elements with magnify on lightning, Cloud had revive just in case) and chapter 17. Oh and for top secrets I had magnified haste on Barret and used thunder linked to both MP and HP absorption on Aerith.

Thanks. I needed this. I'm currently going through hard mode and literally having a 'hard' time even with all of my equipped materia mastered. lol. My individual builds are good (thanks to you, by the way) but when it's a team battle it should be a team build to lessen the difficulty. My only advice to other players is: Use the command menu more often, especially in boss fights. It helps you a lot on thinking about what to do next with less or pressure since battle time slows down when you do.

The main thing that clicked for me with the combat was simply switching characters when the one you're controlling gets targeted. I was having issues with Bahamut and watched a video. The dude did nothing special, but watching him fight that way completely changed how I approached the game and I got a lot better at it really quickly. If a character is busy, switch off, just make sure everyone is doing something.

@@BltzZ Honestly, that's the main reason I don't use Provoke anymore. I used it a bit when I first was playing through the game but found the way you are supposed to switch constantly really discourages this; same with Auto Cure. If Provoke could be cast, I would use it a whole lot more, but everyone probably would tbh. I've also found most fights tend to move a lot faster than your game plan allows, I can't tell you how many times I've brought Time just in case and never used it because I just never got a chance to or thought about it. Sometimes the battle just kinda happens the way it does and you play your way out of it. So that kind of makes Provoke a dead Materia to me, but I can understand why someone who wants to really get in there with Cloud and Tifa would want to use it.

Worth noting that sometimes it may actually be wise to start a Boss fight by using a Ga spell for that initial 20% boost when at Full MP. If you have MP Up &/or methods to regen MP then it's worth it! You can sometimes push a boss straight into Phase 2 with this! It's specially strong w Aerith when laying down an Arcane Ward first then unleashing the Ga spell with her. Put both Magic Up Materia on her too for good measure! Each cast should EASILY do 9999 damage. That's 20K worth of damage right off the bat!

Agreed to most assesments of mateia usage, except for the overall conclusion which is MP conservation. Truth be told you can go rather balanced on choice of materia, weapons and armour e.g using Buster Sword on Cloud since it brings overall stats to all attributes rather than using Mythril Sword for its sole purpose of MP conservation. However if you know the encounters, where benches are and enemy weak points, MP is really not a problem. Hence I prefer to select weapons, armour and materia which boost all fields as much as possible so you have a solid overall. And Hard mode after getting Gotterdammerung, mastered all materia and up`d all weapons becomes normal mode in the end. TLDR; MP is not a problem which this movie emphasizes. Select rather materia, weapons and armour which enhances your character overall.

I agree, I personally don't use this build for my playthrough I go for a more riskier approach. Check my new Barret infinite health build video for more insane builds. Also on hard mode you cannot use benches to restore MP, only HP. This video is for the overall safest build for hard mode that applies to most possible situations :)

@@BltzZ Yes! I finally did it! I have beaten and completed all the battles/missions in Hojo's battle simulator! This is including the Monsters of legend and the Top Secrets and the Pride and Joy :) With just the Top Secrets and Pride and Joy it took me about 5:03 and a HELL of a lot of tries to figure out the timing of when to execute each strat you mentioned in your video but I finally did it. Can't thank you enough for the help homie. Oh yeah I know about skipping straight to chapter 17 to complete this side quest but I figured I could kill 2 birds with one stone. Now I can just focus on beating the game on hard mode. Appreciate the help again bro and keep on that content grind. Pog Champ!

Not sure this still works on retrograde as I still have not landed a ps5, but in base game hard mode one tactic that speeds you through most fights is if you have magnify on your elemental attack spell with mp adsorb on the same element, with a high magic character with magic up materias fires, and firas rarely cost on mp, fireagas cost something usually but not much, though I rarely use those anyways as the cast time is punishing. Sometimes you even regen mp with fire/fira. Most enemies just die instantly, tougher ones make take a couple. I suspect with synergy this will even be better. Outside some boss fights I just ran with that on cloud, and never got close to running low on MP. I'm too lazy to constantly switch things up because Aerith is now on the team. For boss fights I'd change it up a bit, MP adsorb shines when its hitting multiple targets not a singular boss and I may want to swing something into more defense etc.

Hey, I really like your videos, your guides are really awesome when it comes to going into hardmode the first time. When all weapons are maxed out hardmode isn´t a problem anymore, kinda disappointing actually. I am doing a bossrun without attack spells and support spells like time or barrier. I finished chapter 8 without any problems and I think it is because maxed out weapons are way to strong. Keep up the good work, love to see more.

Both are really good! I love feathered gloves so much but metal knuckles will help fights end super quickly. With refocus you gain so much ATB surprisingly faster than normal so feathered gloves are not needed thanks to Gotterdammerung

Just unlocked hard mode and was really surprised to see that I've already been using almost these exact setups. I have be opting for the fastest weapon for tifa over higher attack and using luck + steal materia in place of some other things. Was surprised not to see time + magnify though. I hastega my party at the start of every fight.

The materia I didn't change for everybody was 2x HP Up, 2x MP Up, Revive and Healing. I also chose weapons that had Reprieve and 20% cost reduction on Healing spells. Magnify Healing on Aerith HP Abaorb Enemy Skill on Tifa (thanks Blitzz) Elemental Enemy Weakness on Cloud and Barret weapons. Moved to the armor on some fights. Champion Belt for Tifa and Barret, Healing Carcanet for Aerith. Magnify Subversion vs f**** Tonberries.

Perfect dude that's exactly how you're supposed to play this! I just wish we can make preset classes to select instead of having to remap everything but that'll most likely be in remake 2 :). Great setup!

Stagger + Stop is also a great option if the enemy can be stopped, which are a lot including bosses. Once the enemy has been stunned, immediately cast Stop and unleash all your most powerful attacks. I'd definitely consider having at least 1 team member the Time materia also because of Aerith, she's semi-annoying to get her ATB bars up because her regular attack animations are slow, so she can be Hasted right at the start of every major fight / boss. BTW, small issue is you mentioned putting First Strike on all the characters, you can only have 2 First Strikes, 2 Elemental and I think 2 Warding, so yeah 1 member will always start with no ATB. Easily fixed if Barret is in the team because of Overcharge.

When did I say to put first strike on everyone? Lol there is only 2 in the game. I mainly showcase it on whoever is applicable. If Barret or aerith is in the party it depends on who but I'd rather it on aerith since Barret can build ATB fast. Tifa I don't usually have first strike on because of how fast her ATB charge already is. Cloud is a must have and I base the other choices Barret and aerith depending on who is in the party since they rarely team up together in the story. I don't use offensive magic at all with Cloud other than elemental weapon.. For Hard Mode I simply have everyone a master heal & revive, 2x HP+ and ran wit it. Hardedge all day.

Just having Gotterdammerung makes hard mode so much easier :) I think I had full MP against most bosses except a few (those multi-boss chapters). All the weapons with bloodsucker (hardedge, metal knuckle, EKG cannon, mytril rod) also save so much MP against mobs, not so much on mini-bosses or bosses though, but those are kinda the best weapons for them anyways imo, except that EKG for Barret?

You can click on the hard mode challenges without being on hard mode! I got Gotterdammerung on normal without beating it on hard mode. Just make sure to have all of Aeriths colliseum matches done beforehand in chapter 9

If I'm not mistaken, the MP regeneration upgrades in these weapons dictates how much MP is drawn from smashing boxes out in the world. So if you're hurting for MP during your play through, throw on their magic weapons, get that upgrade, and hunt around for boxes. Edit: Spelling

Hard mode is no freaking joke. The wrath hound in level killed me so many times until I spammed ice from both Tifa and cloud. And with roche , you better get good at counterstance. Leading up to roche is no joke, died so many times to the missles

For normal encounters with multiple enemies just do this. Put All magic up on aerith and first strike. Then link an elemental Material like fire with amplifikation. Use the same elemental Materia with mp absorb on another linked slots. Aerith will end most of the Fights before they even begin and she gets all the mp back most of the time. The more enemies the better.

I barely maxed any materia out but my builds were basically revive and cure on all characters. Aeris as a mage and everyone else as an attacker. U can beat the whole game on hard without using black magic except for the house boss

I would say that atb ward is often considered Aerith's worst skill because people insist on using it offensively. As an utility buff is amazing however. It lasts basically forever and it can be the difference between being able to heal/revive someone on time or being wiped out before that last bit of atb filled up.

ATB was is a tricky one that takes ATB from aerith to give to teammates, if you build a lot of ATB with aerith and don't mind utilizing it to help out tifa etc then it's gold!

Like I said, it's less an offensive tool and more about versatility. Say you are fighting multiple flying enemies. Cloud and Tifa struggle to build atb against them whereas Aerith does not. Or if you are fighting an enemy that counters magic like Behemoth or loves to cast reflect and/or silence every ten seconds like Jenova. It's also more atb and mp efficient to give up one of Aerith's atb bars so that someone else can use chakra instead of her having to use 2 bars to use prayer or waste mp to heal. And lastly is useful if Aerith comes under pressure from an enemy and is forced to block as she can let an ally use the atb she is gaining to either heal her or aggro the enemy instead of risking being interrupted trying to escape. It's situational, but it doesn't take up materia or accesory slots and once casted it basically lasts forever even if Aerith dies.

Even though I don't plan to play on Hard Mode (I'm not the most skilled gamer and mostly play for the story lol), I do want to level up my characters and at least get the Bahamut summon materia. Feather gloves for me is the best for Tifa, it can replenish the ATB fast. Coupled with ATB Assist, you'll give your teammates free ATB anytime you spam True Strike on a staggered enemy.

You are right no build's gonna work as the same way you've mentioned you gotta experiment by yourself and i actually don't use any healing materia except the chakra because of the MP..... at first it was tough now i am used to it, so lot's of practice and experimenting and i see you've put lots of efforts here and i am gonna use some of your build and mix them up ;)

Pretty much but they’re best used to finish the hard modes in the simulator so that you can have more materia slots. I only completed chapters 1, 2, 3, 4 and 14 on hard. The others I can’t finish.

Update: I was able to finish 2 more chapters in hard mode with your suggested builds and battle strategy. I had fun using Barret as a healer with chakra and prayer. Was able to finish off some bosses in just 1 or 2 attempts. Thanks, man.
