Gertie is an adult female Grey-Headed Flying-Fox who was rescued 4 days ago when she was found crawling along the ground and attempting to climb a tree but falling before she got very far up.
This is typical behaviour of a flying-fox who has hit its head and is a little concussed and dizzy.
The lovely MOP watched her and guarded her until I arrived (quickly, because it was only 2 kms from home).
Gertie has done very well in care and is ready for a hard release back into the colony. Hard releases are unsupported releases, within a week of coming into care, while the bat is still in good condition and flight fit. A soft release is through a flight release aviary where they have time to build up their fitness after a longer stint in rehab. It is a supported release with food hung on the outside of the cage after the release so if they aren't fit enough to find enough food in the wild they can come back to the release cage and top up on the fruit left there for them.
Gertie flew beautifully and didn't hesitate. Since she was still lactating, I hope her baby was old enough to survive the 4 days without her, and that she can find her baby and take over baby's care as it grows up and becomes independent.
Watch out for cars and busy roads in future, and try not to come back. We'll be here if you need help, but would really prefer you don't have need of our help.
I added some extra M&M footage of our car chats after the disclaimer screen. Enjoy, and make of it what you will. I haven't seen Maggie for weeks and we had a lot of catching up.
