This is a really well done video! He gets right into it immediately, speaks clearly, shows everything and explains everything really well even to someone like myself who isn't very familiar with cars. This video helped me narrow down the problem to my battery or alternator AND showed me exactly how I can determine which one of those two is the problem tomorrow when my friend brings the multimeter.

Great video...I wonder if anyone has any comments on my situation: Now my battery (a year old Varta) has been suffering from a drain in my car - to the point it has been going increasingly flat. But... the last three days my car started cutting out while driving... yet, I could re-start it (so not a starter motor issue) and drive on. But today it finally decided it would cut out more than ever before (multiple times) and totally drain the battery - which, to me, suggests eitrher 1) An alternator no longer powering the bad battery or 2) The bad battery is now basically dead (so whatever the alternator does no longer matters). I managed to jump-start (after 10 mins) off my partner's car as a test... and only got about half a mile before it cut out again. I'll be replacing the battery asap. But do i *also* have an alternator problem? Of course, i will confirm this when I finally manage to get the car from where I had to leave it!

Start problem in my Accord EXL2013. Click sound was clear. Here is what I did to resolve the issue. I paid 90$ for complete diagnosis at a Honda Service Center. They found faulty starter. Total Quote was 600$ for starter+299$ for labor. Estimate was ~950$. I took the part number from them and ordered a brand new starter from Genuine honda parts that cost me 275$. Then for the installation, i went back to Honda service center. Installation cost was 200$ as they deducted the 90$ I paid for the diagnosis. So overall repair cost was around 575$ which was way better than paying 950$. The issue has been resolved and I have driven the car after repair for another 100 miles. No trouble starting at all. Honda has a faulty starters in 2013,2014,2015 series. They are fully aware of that but will never accept or recall. This will be my last Honda car. PS: Starters are not covered under powertrain warranty. Don't waste your time

Appreciated the video. Yes, if you can jump it, and it starts, probable not the starter. Especially, if you had to do it a few times after the car was running , then left to sit, and not starting until you jumped it again. I like the way you checked for the possible parasitic drain added to your video. Once I had my car started and ran it awhile I checked the battery with car off and it was ok 12.4. Then I ran the car checking the alternator and it was working producing a voltage charge in the proper range, but after sitting a few hours voltage on the battery was down to 10.1. No parasitic drain thanks to your check. Just an old bad battery! Our weather changed to cold and exposed it. I got 6 yrs 2 mo. out of a 3 year warranty battery. No complaints, but thank you for helping diagnose.

My car started messing up last week one day I was about to drive home from work and noticed steering wheel was temporarily hard to turn and there was a burning smell and whining noise coming from the alternator. A few days later it can only start up and stay on for a minute or two before the engine slows down to a complete stop a couple of days after that point the car refuses to even turn on but makes a clicking noise when turning the key then a few days after that it still refuses to turn on but now makes absolutely no noise when turning key

My starter has a signal click I checked it was still good battery had good voltage of 12.6 I’m thinking misconnection or ignition relay or a draw
@Venkalth5 жыл бұрын
Just because a battery has 12,6 volts doesn't mean it has the amps needed to start the car. The click is the actuator engaging which connects the starter to the flywheel. My van had the same issue, only a single click while starting. Battery had 12,6 volts aswell. Replaced the battery and it started right up
@BudgetMechanicHawaii5 жыл бұрын
Try jump starting it first, 12.6 is voltage but that number may be dropping when load is applied (bad battery, or alternator). Eliminate that first, then could be bad starter.

Ok I agree with the diagnosis and testing but what if your having the same problem as in the beginning plus I have a brand new battery, I also have a brand new alternator, new cables throughout and a new solenoid as well. I’m currently replacing the starter at the moment. It was the old one only 1 year old. What then if it’s still doing the same thing. Btw it’s on a 1989 Chevrolet with a 454 cid 4 barrel for the make and engine size. It also has 55,608 actual miles on odometer.

Two days ago from out-of-the-blue my car shut off while idling in the drive-thru at a fast food place. It was off for about 30 minutes when I was finally able to check the cells in the battery and they were low. Refilled cells and the car started up. It has started randomly shutting off or not starting occasionally. Took it to the auto parts store and have them run an electrical diagnostic and it showed no problem with the charging system, all within specs. I have questions. Could it still be the battery? I only ask because I know it had to be an issue with the cells being low? If this is not it, what else should I check? Ignition switch maybe? For a couple of weeks leading up to this the car was doing a few weird electrical things. The screen would get stuck sometimes telling me The back-up camera was in use . And when it is not starting, I get no lights or accessories of any kind working. But the battery checks at 12.6 and the alternator checks at 14.3. the radio doesn't work in the car. 2013 Ford focus. Thanks for any feedback.

Bad alternator can cause car not to start? I pop 75 amp fuse under the hood, I found out it was missing plastic cap on positive lead so fix it, and now the starter click. Battery brand new and both terminal are new. What can be wrong?
@Bige4u5 жыл бұрын
Very rarely a battery that young will not go bad, even though its always a possibility and judging by all that corrosion on the battery leads, im willing to bet thats the culprit. Chances are, the corrosion will not allow enough power get to the starter and also not get a sufficient charge from the alternator. Clean both battery posts and cables thoroughly, charge the battery and you're good to go, its all about cleanliness, due the harsh evironment that thrives under the hood of every vehicle.

Since battery is almost 5 years old, I am leaning to battery replacement conclusion. However, if the battery has gone bad then should not car's remote system also stop working? Thanks for a great video. I need some advice, if you have the time. I have problem starting i cold weather only, below zero. Last year it didn't start when -10. The funny thing was it didn't help with jump starting it neither, as with starter cables and another running car beside. Still just clicking from the starter trying to engage etc. So with a long extra cable connected to the engine I heated it up during one hour. And then the starter spun normally as in the summer and it started. I bought a new battery, even that the old one was not so old. The same thing happened next day as well. If it would have been the battery, the car would have started when using extra starting cables and a running car, right? That's why I think that it is the starter that is getting old and that didn't had the power to crank the cld engine. You didn't have any problem jump start the engine, so it's not your starter. You just donät get the power enough with your own battery. Do you think it could be my alternator or my statrter? Really hope you have time to give some feedback. It's getting colder here. :-)

Hi I have a question I have honda hr-v 2019 and the car starts slow sometimes faster after being parked for 8 to 9 hours it starts normally every time if you run into a store or fill up a gas! But when it parked for 8 hours or more it really starts slow. It takes about 2 to 3 seconds before it starts. I took it to a mechanic, he checked it and say car starts normally and I replied it's because I was just driving it! I asked him if I can leave my car overnight in his shop so he can check it again, he said it's okay, next morning I called him about 9 o'clock, the mechanic said the car started normally and I think he was just lied to me because he couldn't find the real reason, the car never started normally for me before when parked for a prolonged period of time even the next day when I went to work the car started slowly and when I finish my work the car started slowly again! My car battery is only one year old, installed by Honda dealership 5 month ago. At this point I am stucked! Went to three different shops and no one can determine the cause because when I come the car starts normally but again it give a little bit of hesitation when it being parked for 8 hours or more. Can you give me advice? Thank you

My car sounded just like it did at around 1:50, and it the battery showed it was at 100%. The only way it started was with the jumper cables. Does this mean it’s the alternator?
