So what exactly is Made Of Ale anyway? From what I've seen, it's just re-recordings of some of your old songs.
@thewiseturtle2 жыл бұрын
@@MKVProcrastinator It's the live recordings you see in these videos. These are different from the mixed studio recordings of their previous albums. It's something that lots of bands do, to offer different kinds of sounds. Live recordings are more "natural" while mixed recordings are more "polished". Not everyone cares about the difference, but some do.

Not actually British in this American song. You might've heard another American song that in the chorus goes "Bohn in the USA". That was not sung in British accent either.

This song's always reminded me of the kind of songs my parents would sing me as a child. There's just something wonderfully home-like about it.
@allenwebber1951 Жыл бұрын
That's because it was composed by America's first somewhat successful composer of popular songs, Stephen Foster (1826-1864). I can't believe he's not acknowledged in this video!

Let us pause in life's pleasures and count its many tears While we all sup sorrow with the poor There's a song that will linger forever in our ears Oh, hard times, come again no more 'Tis the song, the sigh of the weary Hard times, hard times, come again no more Many days you have lingered around my cabin door Oh, hard times, come again no more While we seek mirth and beauty and music, light and gay There are frail forms fainting at the door Though their voices are silent, their pleading looks will say Oh, hard times, come again no more 'Tis the song, the sigh of the weary Hard times, hard times, come again no more Many days you have lingered around my cabin door Oh, hard times, come again no more There's a pale weeping maiden who toils her life away With a worn heart whose better days are o'er Though her voice would be merry, 'tis sighing all the day Oh, hard times come again no more 'Tis the song, the sigh of the weary Hard times, hard times, come again no more Many days you have lingered around my cabin door Oh, hard times, come again no more 'Tis the song, the sigh of the weary Hard times, hard times, come again no more Many days you have lingered around my cabin door Oh, hard times, come again no more 'Tis the song, the sigh of the weary Hard times, hard times, come again no more Many days you have lingered around my cabin door Oh, hard times, come again no more Oh, hard times, come again no more Oh, hard times, come again no more Let me know if these lyrics aren't exactly correct lol

I'm an inland kind of guy. I was born and raised in a forest. I've seen the ocean many times, but it's a journey from my home. I'm absolutely no sailor; singing sea shanties feels akin to stolen valor. This one might be sung close enough to a John Deere for me to participate in.
@PhoebusApollo142 ай бұрын
Well this isn't a sea shanty, but a traditional American folk/parlor song. While it can be sung at sea the idea is to sing it at parties to honor the less fortunate. It was a big deal during the Civil war as union soilders would sing it to keep moral up, and made their own parody version about hardtack.

This is one of my favorite songs and one I love to sing/sing-along with. I really like your arrangement of this with the staggered introduction of more voices and instruments. That chorus at 3:30 when the music drops out and all voices join in (even the instrumentalists!) is just special. I thought you guys were good when you were sitting around a table singing years ago but you are really impressing me with how you've elevated your songs in ways that enhance and never detract from the 'folk-i-ness' of the music you sing. Well done. (gotta admit, I got kind of teary in my first listen; I love this song and your versions so much)
@allenwebber1951 Жыл бұрын
Actually, this is one that is definitely not a folk song. It was composed by Stephen Collins Foster (1826-1864) in 1854. I don't know why they didn't bother to acknowledge him in this video's credits.

It's a hopeful song. Somewhere between the sad and the happy.
@majkus2 жыл бұрын
It does not need to be arranged with this lively beat and instrumentation; in its earliest days, the likely performance was as parlor music, with one singer accompanied by a piano. Think of a small party in 1855, with the daughter of the household playing the piano, an 'accomplishment', and the father singing the lyrics. It tells the well-off people at the party to give a thought to those less fortunate. For another take on this classic, check out the magnificent Mavis Staples : kzbin.info/www/bejne/gYvWgGZqbaeCjZI

I had a look through the Music videos playlist, and there's a few of the Made of Ale ones that are missing. This one, Hog Eye, and Pride of the White Star Line. Would be lovely if they could be magicked into it so I can have all the delicious videos in one place. 'Cause, you know, it's so much work to click two different playlists when I want to listen to more things ;) Btw, I think Hard Times would be amazing as a community video. It's such a cozy song somehow. I think I'm gonna let The Longest Pony rest today and have Made of Ale on repeat :)
