This 4yo gelding has come in for gentling and starting. They had had to call a vet for sedation every time they ever tried to trim his feet, he is/was highly over-reactive to most things and uncoordinated to boot! This is a 2 day series of teaching a horse to take the bit...

I have to tell you how much I appreciate this video of teaching horse to take the bit. In studying sooo much in past 1 1/2 yrs by videos on training, I usually have few favs of 1 particular subject. But with THIS video , it's the only 1 I need. Thanks!!

So I did a lot of prep work, got the bit in the first day pretty well, gave it a few days. Second attempt was ok, but the head went up. Mind you she is a giraffe and there's NO way I can reach up that high! So I backed up, went through the prep work again, and got the bit in. Gave it a few more days - today was a crazy, head up, ain't no way that bit is going in my mouth type of day. I tried to back track, but when I tried to get the bit near her mouth, she actually pulled me up off the ground. (The horse in the video pulled his head up at first, but it wasn't a major issue because of his size. ) I hope she doesn't use this against me as we move forward with this process. Decided to go back to just the halter going on and off in order to end on a good note. But I feel frustrated.

Maybe make a loop in a soft lead rope, slip that in, now when she raises her head she takes the rope with her, you can hold the rope and then wait and ask for her to lower her head and reward for that try!

Thank you for sharing. I really like this method. I was told that it helps if you use molasses to sweeten the bit. Is that true? I also noticed that in all the videos I've seen of horses being introduced to the bit they already were introduced to the saddle. Is there a reason why it's done that way? Thank you again for sharing!
@GerryCoxHorsemanship
@GerryCoxHorsemanship 4 жыл бұрын
I don't think molasses has much of an impact, they may like it but why bother? As for the saddle, it is just part of the normal sequence of starting a colt I guess... You can sure introduce a bit sooner.. I often let them pack a bit while doing ground work...

I am just starting bit training on my 3 yr old mustang. What do you suggest as in wrinkle around the mouth? My first time intro was yesterday and I had 1 wrinkle. Kept it for about 5 minutes then removed. I will definitely restart this way! Thank you for your videos!
@GerryCoxHorsemanship
@GerryCoxHorsemanship 2 жыл бұрын
Personally when first putting it in like that i DO ask for one Wrinkle to help them keep for getting a tongue over. You can also add a cave-in to help keep for gapping the mouth open. When they are good, later, drop it down, NO wrinkle, just to the touch of the corner. Also let him wear it and feed him with it!

Tennel: I just saw ur other comment. I've studied A LOT about bits & the effects. I would use only the mildest with the lightest hands. But there's other times I'd use side pull. I get where ur coming from. I don't disagree.

Awww poor abused horse with the perfect healthy shiny coat and perfect body score what a poor baby. My goodness people are so f*cking stupid. BITS ARE NOT ABUSE. If he were "abusing" this horse do you think the horse would sit there?? He is obviously bigger and stronger than the man. If he were that displeased he would leave. But go off about how smart and educated you are on how abusive bits are.
@darkwolf2622
@darkwolf2622 3 жыл бұрын
Bits CAN be abuse when put into uneducated people’s hands. It’s exactly like a prong collar on a dog. It can do serious damage if you don’t know what you’re doing. I get what you’re saying, but at least acknowledge both sides and educate rather than just calling people idiots.
